Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Hey guys, i just brought my first gaming PC, pretty much purely from watching footage of ARMA 2 on youtube etc... Just looks sublime and i used to play the original OPF on PC. Anyway im really new to PC gaming, and im looking to buy a retail copy of ARMA 2 after playing the heck out of the demo. Should i go for it on steam, or should i buy a hard copy? Can i use mods and addons with the steam version, is it identical etc.. Steam patches automatically doesnt it, that would be good for me since im really terrible at PC gaming at the moment, still trying to figure it all out. Thanks
Relemar 10 Posted September 16, 2009 hard copy, yes its the same but it gets slower updates usually. hard copy is the best bet, Steam is just.. too much messing around
icebreakr 3159 Posted September 16, 2009 Buy hardcopy from one of UK web stores, even much cheaper than Steam version. Mediamarkt and other big crap stores sell it for 50€ here (like $65-70) but from UK u can grab it for less than 27€.
VariousArtist 19 Posted September 16, 2009 Agree - steam for valve games - hardcopy for other games! Also, just in case, you can easier sell a hardcopy than a steamgame if you dont make an account for each game you own on steam. (you have to sell the account so all games that are registered on that account.)
Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Thanks guys, hardcopy it is. How hard is patching it? Is it a case of downloading it and it does it for you or.... Sorry im really new to all this.
rellikki 7 Posted September 16, 2009 Thanks guys, hardcopy it is. How hard is patching it? Is it a case of downloading it and it does it for you or.... Sorry im really new to all this. You will need to download the patch and simply run the .exe file stored in the archieve. It will automatically update the game for you.
W0lle 1052 Posted September 16, 2009 Patching the hardcopy is just downloading the patch, eventually unpack it and start the .exe file.
Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Ah thanks guys, with mods, is it a case of downloading them, copying them into the addons folder in the program files, and booting the game up?
VariousArtist 19 Posted September 16, 2009 Basicly yes - search the forum for mod installation and I suggest to use the arma launcher - very helpful when you fidle with mods. Oh, and welcome!
Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Thanks for all the information, i really appreciate it. Il get my hardcopy ordered now and hope to be around for quite a while.
B17gunner98th 10 Posted September 16, 2009 I like Steam more because you don't have to say "WHERE IS THAT DAMNED CD/CASE/CDKEY!" But the bad part is if you get your account stolen all your games are gone but you can get your account back pretty quickly. I've had Steam since it first came out and never have had my account stolen.

Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Thanks! I think i completed the OPF CWC campaign about 6 times in the first few weeks of release, and the demo for ARMA 2 blew me away. Running this on very high is just... Beautiful.

Running this on very high is just... Beautiful. just an advise, don't get frustrated if you ran through bugs, BI has fixed a lot of them since it's released, and remember to check community made missions and addons, plenty of addons are just remarkable. Can we get you to post your system spec.
Thirdup 0 Posted September 16, 2009 Basicly yes - search the forum for mod installation and I suggest to use the arma launcher - very helpful when you fidle with mods.Oh, and welcome! ^This It's really best to keep your mods seperated from the core game (the old "@modName" method is still widely accepted as the standard). It's easy to setup and simple to maintain things that way. There are a number of mod launchers out there making it all point-and-click now. Welcome aboard..... Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Yeah sure, although ive already played the demo, done the benchmark, and it runs it at high/very high with a 30fps average on very high. Honestly i was shocked it did, as ive been hearing stories about how unoptimized it is, how it needs a overclocked quad core etc... To run at high, im getting zero slowdown even when really messing around in editor on high. AMD Athlon IIx2 dual core 245 @ 3 GHz (am3) Palit Geforce GTS 250 GDDR3 1GB Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2 Twinx Dual channel RAM Vista Home Premium 32 bit Really surprised i get such a good frame rate even on very high, as my system isnt the most powerful on the market. Also runs crysis on very high all the way through with no issues. Was considering getting a quad core, but there doesnt seem to be any need to do that just yet since ARMA runs so well as it is. ---------- Post added at 08:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:36 PM ---------- Mods are some way down the line for me, I want to get the Campaign/scenarios done a few times, enjoy the game, and get a lot better at it before i start diving into mods/multiplayer etc... SLNC 10 Posted September 16, 2009 I bought it on Steam, because I love Steam and the patching stuff is much easier, because it automatically downloads the patch and you don't even have to install it. And Welcome to ArmA 2!
Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 My only issue with steam is the higher price, 13 pounds higher to be exact (than play.com) ---------- Post added at 09:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:00 PM ---------- And you dont get a hard copy, i mean... everyone likes a full shelf of games dont they? I dont like the idea of digital distribution all that much, its nice to get a hard copy, adds to the "excitement" of a new release etc...

I'm surprised you're getting that many fps! could it be x86 vs x64?
Skyline On Fire 10 Posted September 16, 2009 Nobody was as surprised as me when it came back like that. Not suer why its working so well, could it be the OS? I heard vista was the worst one to run ARMA2 on too...

I heard vista was the worst one to run ARMA2 on too... ARMA 2's performance is a bit of a win-lose situation. Some people can run it with no problems, other cannot. But as always you hear the negative voices more :)
