mrcash2009 0 Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) As a spin of from another thread, im curious to hear how others play in SP and use there teams and tactics with enemy approach etc on the infantry side. IE how do you like to control your teams, share some info on what you think works best to control the AI teams in Arma2. To kick things off heres a copy from another thread on one aspect and my reply which is how I do things. I use aware and danger a lot when I am commanding a squad. Most times I split my men into at least 2 groups. Usually I have 4 or so men under Red, and myself and 3 or so under White. I have all groups under aware, but stay crouched. I then bound to contact with the Red Team. Once in contact I switch everyone to danger. As stated in danger the AI will bound within their group when they move. So when I'm advancing in contact it takes a lot slower, but my men do not run into fire near as much. I will also then bound with my White Team. I will send them ahead and cover while I move ahead, etc. ArmA is a lot slower, but I find the combat a lot more fullfilling. Spot on mate, literally a mirror to what i do (with voice activation too for speed).I notice "stay crouched" is very nice in Arma 2. Arma 1 it was annoying as they would crouch non stop, now they scoot over ground while keeping low (looks very authentic too). I have really started to use aware/stay crouched - danger/stay crouched a lot recently with Arma2. Realy gives the feel and action of being near enemy and having to creep at speed over open ground to cover with your head down. I tend to go for groups of 2 with a medic with me staying at the rear, and flanking with 2 teams of 2 and myself and medic firing long range / suppression. Would like to here how others work, plus ideas and other tactics they have used. Im aware of tactical guides and such but I wanted some SP players views on what they like and how they work. (Please no AI bugs and issue posts). Edited July 13, 2009 by mrcash2009
[GLT] Legislator 66 Posted July 14, 2009 SP tactics don't differ from MP tactics when playing coop so I'll hang in this thread. Maybe I'm gonna learn something. If there are no enemy contacts and I'm walking with my mates along a street, I always use staggered column formation. That always worked quiet nice and AI sticks near the road. When crossing woods or open fields, I use row and line formations depending on the terrain/situation. AI covers quiet a huge area that way. When attacking the enemy I use V formation so the AI is able to flank the enemy a little bit while I watch everything from behind. I use calm moments to order the medic to heal the teammembers. This way they're always healthy. Forget commanding AI over huge distances ... the team has always to stick together. At least you can make exceptions for human players. When fighting in the woods or urban areas I'll always command 'stealth' and not to stand while walking. Basicly the team aims more accurate and the losses are decreased. manberries 0 Posted July 14, 2009 My tactics are simple. If i ever touch a road it is only to cross it, keep my men in a diamond formation, never move faster than a jog, keep constant vigilance about scanning the horizon, and when I make contact I drop down and engage from there; just find cover and let them do the moving, when they do shoot them for trying it. This basically breaks down into me engaging the enemy then going defensive. The only exception is in the case of static weapons or armed vehicles, for those i usually find some way to sneak in close to them and use what i cant to either avoid or destroy them. S!fkaIaC 10 Posted July 14, 2009 My tactics: #1: Never trust bushes as cover, you never know if the particular bush also blocks AI view #2: If you are spotted by one enemy AI-RUN! Because all other enemy AI on the island know from now on your position in cm precision. #3: Avoid to bring AI controlled wheeled vehicles into narrow places, AI will crash them. #4: Avoid open fields with bales of straw with MBTs, very often AI driver is recognizing that obstacle to late and it flips the MBT upside down. #5: Never keep as Infantry any vehicle in formation, it will run over you sooner or later #6: Never fly if you suffer from the receiving-bug, because 100% for sure the receiving bug will hit you while flying and you crash #7: When you go into a CQB, learn which BIS houses are accessible and which are not and on which buildings you can shatter the windows for shooting out of then. It boosts your survivability #8: Whenever you park a vehicle in an unsafe area, get yourself and AI out of it and magically it will not be from any interest for any AI anymore .......I guess I can add a 1000 more :D
[GLT] Legislator 66 Posted July 14, 2009 Naa, you didn't even read the 1st post --> (Please no AI bugs and issue posts).
Shinobi575 10 Posted July 14, 2009 F**k what everyone is saying here, grab a 249 lay down in the middle of a field without grass, while drinking a beer and smoking a cig and just spray and pray towards the enemies direction, and you will eventually hit something; weather it be a cow or a chicken or a bad guy. celery 8 Posted July 14, 2009 Stay near cover and shoot to kill.
[GLT] Legislator 66 Posted July 14, 2009 @Shinobi575: Ah, the "friday-evening-tactics" :D You may be surprised, but suppressive fire is finally working on the AI. So your post - although not intended I guess - makes some sense ;) Just be sure to have a walking ammo crate close to you with M246 ammo.
dunedain 48 Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) I move from cover to cover except bushes ofcourse :D , I use leaning as much as I can and when something's wrong I blow the whole hamlet with a bunch of 40mm grenades or AT4 if I want stealth. :) Edited July 14, 2009 by dunedain
[GLT] Legislator 66 Posted July 14, 2009 I've got another hint! Aim at the eggs to hit the head! :D It's working quite well!
Yoshama 0 Posted July 14, 2009 i like to micromanage the locations of my squad. ill send them into certain positions and have them crouch or prone. ill put the mg in the middle and others around to cover the flanks, anti tank soldiers stay away from the squad when engaging tanks or else the entire squad dies. when i attack i leave the mg or sniper back to provide over watch while the rest of the squad moves in with me in line formation. when i pick a place to hold down i look for tree lines or sometimes down a street, especially on a hill. i haven't got much practice with a2 yet but in a1 it worked pretty well. in a2 so far all i have is used the micro AI and just moved when they moved, or i stick in a formation i have experimented with bounding over watch, its fun but slow, i don't always have 2 hours to play a2
Guest Posted July 14, 2009 I love doing co op in domination. Yesterday me and this guy had tonnes of fun, i was piloting an AH1 and he was the gunner. We moved to the village and hovered behind a large foresty mountain. Quickly i hovered up above the hill and the gunner popped out 4 hellfires. Thats 4 hellfires and 4 kills. Then we used the other 4 to take out AA implacements. Then he switched to the cannon and started taking out soft targets, soon we had the highest score in the server. After neutralizing almost an entire village, i then did a sweep along a large road where the gunner then launched 20 or so rockets. One straffe that was! Within minutes the town had been captured, and im sure it was 90% our kills! :D:D:D
BLSmith2112 0 Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) Well I don't play SP, and I hate that damned Domination and Evolution ruining this game - but I still find ways to use AI in the other .004% of MP servers that dont run crap "Human Vs. Brainless Robot" missions all day long. I mirror pretty much what the OP is. I run my AI in an Aware mode, Engage at will, 2 color teams, usually formation line (sometimes column). If I enter a probable enemy location, I tell my guys to lay down & stop. I send one AI (team red) out (with his unsurpassed visuals) in stealth mode couched and set to hold fire. While he proceeds 20m+ ahead, I tell my men to crouch and engage at will and Advance (still in aware so they don't break formation). Once the target is called out ahead I tell the main group to get into danger mode (so they still maintain some sort of formation but are taking cover) - and then shortly after tell them to stop. If I'm in a forest and have a little extra time - I'll tell everyone to hold fire and select their targets so its a fast assault - otherwise, in most scenarios they will be permitted to fire when ready. If its in an open field I may make an AI or two flank around left while I go right... just in case its a human I don't want him to get 2 steps ahead of me. While the engagement is going on, I tell the front AI to maintain cover and lay down. The AI progresses forward through the grass and calls out more targets for my other AI. If its in a city, I usually command all of my units individually (while in danger mode & crouched). I make the men move in pairs and tell them to go up against the sides of buildings and look in specific directions with "Function 1-2-3 + 3, 8 + direction". While this is effective, it gets annoying as hell giving individual orders to 10 AI... I have to keep the radio up for VOIP volume and so I'm forced to listen to this crap.. If only there could be an OFFICIAL radio setting that makes OUTGOING messages just make the little "beep" noise instead of full sentences... good servers will prevent any 3rd party addons so having some fancy Radio Reduction mod (like the one out) don't help what so ever. When the engagement is done in ether case, I "~, 1, 1, ~, 7, 3, ~, 7, 6, ~, 3, 2, ~, 8, 7, ~, 9, 9, 1, ~, 3, 7". I feel sorry for the guys who have to read the radio... after 7-8 years its easy to remember. Thats: (I believe) -Select All, Return to formation. -Select All, Aware -Select All, Stand up -Select All, Engage at will -Select All, Formation Line -Select All, All team white -Select All, All scan horizon Edited July 14, 2009 by Victor
