zeep 3 Posted July 4, 2009 I'm checking out different aspects of arma2 before purchasing. The realism factor of the game is very important to me. Take a look at this video at 1:33, the two guys laying proned are turning left / right looking for enemies. I was very suprised to see they are simply spinning on their center pivot! There are a few things very wrong here: First: The prone turning movement is too fast Second: Shouldn't this be a nice turning animation instead? It strikes me as odd that BI didn't implement proper prone turning in the game and that the turning itself is so unrealisticly fast! Or is it just a lag effect i'm seeing due to online play? Shinobi575 10 Posted July 4, 2009 depending on your mouse sensitivity you can make it realistic if you'd like ... :-|
Antichrist 0 Posted July 4, 2009 That's a "feature" that's been in the game since OFP.
sparks50 0 Posted July 4, 2009 ACE added a limit to this, that I am in favor of. You cant spin quickly around on your belly, unless you stop aiming and use your hands and feet(movement keys) to assist you.
dunedain 48 Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) zeep, ACE have done some really good improvements on that field with Armed Assault, I think you'll have to wait ACE2. :) Edited July 4, 2009 by dunedain
frederf 0 Posted July 4, 2009 You should really try ACE1 for ArmA1. It had a nice system where you had to combine turning with mouse with A/D strafe keys for large angular turns while prone. You could still spin around quickly behind yourself by mouse movement during an evasive roll. I also like Ghost Recon's (before Advanced Warfighter) animation for rotations while prone. tf_nick 10 Posted July 4, 2009 it's just a game dude, if you want realistic shit go join the real army instead of playing the game
Antichrist 0 Posted July 4, 2009 The main point is that proned turning is fine as it is. Sure it is not realistic, but it is quick and that helps a lot in some intense firefights.

Thank you for deciding this for all of us. I do not agree. I've have played much ACE for ArmA1 and prefer the more restricted movement while prone scheme. Antichrist 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Wasn't just me. Not many people complained about it in original OFP, that's why it never got changed.
Maddmatt 1 Posted July 4, 2009 Personally I prefer being able to turn around quickly. In real life you can make movements that are not represented in games and it makes up for that.
max power 21 Posted July 4, 2009 Yeah, I guess you would be able to roll onto your back and shoot backwards if you really had to.
frederf 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Which is pretty exactly what the ACE1 system allows.
{SAS}Silentkiller 0 Posted July 4, 2009 I don't think it's that unrealistic! You only move when the animation moves, that's good enough for me :)
Murphe 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Personally I prefer being able to turn around quickly. In real life you can make movements that are not represented in games and it makes up for that. I have to agree with this. This is one of those instances when BI chose gameplay over realism way back for OFP and I think it's unlikly to change. I played ACE for Arma and it was nice feature in principal, but should anyone sneek up behind you it is not realistic to move painfully slowly to face them and defend yourself, when in real life it would be much quicker and easier to look and have your rifle pointing in the other direction. MBot 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Raven Shield had this implemented very well. You could turn/aim quickly in a sector of perhaps 45°, turning more when prone was slow and had your character readjust is position.
zeep 3 Posted July 4, 2009 I must say i'm suprised to see the diversity of opinions here on a subject such as this. Somehow i expected ARMA2 forum goers to agree that in-game prone turning should not ridicule it's real life counterpart. :P But i'm biased, coming from a very realistic infantry gaming background. Sounds like i need to move on to ACE2.

IronTrooper 0 Posted July 4, 2009 I mentioned this problem in the 1.03 suggestions (too bad nobody reads this stuff). Check out this with your own avatar in the third person view. There's an animation that should be there always. When the turn is too big he helps with his hands.

Thats true, I don't play in third person, there is always a turning animation when prone in 3rd person that is absent in 1st person. Personally, I think the turn rate should be the same but with the animation present in 1st person, so when you turn one hand comes off the rifle making aiming difficult/impossible. Then when you stop it takes half a second or so to return to normal. I think thats a fair compromise between how it is now and how it was in ACE.
frederf 0 Posted July 4, 2009 It's not just an animation issue, it's a problem of gameplay and realism. Gameplay suffers because people spin like tops on the ground. I mean, try laying on your stomach and doing 360 degrees, then try it in an Interceptor vest. I don't buy this explanation that "Fast prone turning is a gameplay consideration" because it isn't. Gameplay doesn't demand unrealism. ADHD CS:S simpletons demand unrealism. The game plays perfectly fine the ACE1 way. You learn not to go prone in urban/CQB situations... just like an Army drill sergeant would teach you.
dunedain 48 Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) I like much more ACE1 way, but in real if your heard some bad guy at your back, even you lying down, you just turn your back and shoot the mother fucker, I've never been in war but that how i do it playing softair so for me neither Arma vanilla or ACE are realistic.. frederf 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Have you played ACE1? You can do quick 180 degree turns while prone.
