Snow campaign..

Recommended Posts

Why is there no campaign in the snow?

That would be A really cool and B more realistic

Since a lot of the areas likely to enter fighting are the ones near Russia

Where there is most likely snow! :D.

Making a snow campaign would also require making a snow version of Chernarus. Either that or they would have to implement full seasons support, which would rock - but also be a huge amount of work.

People will surely release snow islands soon enough.

Maybe but it would not act like real snow right?

It will just look like snow..

I don't understand why no one is making a snow campaign it is really cool.

Did you ever see a tank move in the snow?

It just looks so amazing..

Also you have different terrain.

Like Compact snow, Soft snow, Frozen water and so on.

Winter Warfare is quite a bit more complicated than just painting everthing white. I like flightsims which change seasons - for them the influence is minimal - but for vehicles and foot soldiers, doing it right would be massive work.

I'm not opposed to the idea, just saying it would be a lot of effort.

Good to know, but ArmA II's only been out for 9 days. Mods of the size you're talking about take very long to make. Definitely more than 9 days. However, we'll no doubt see winter mods in the distant future.

That's why it's in the Suggestion Forum and not the mod forum.

Plus I would rather the develpers work on something like this rather then the modders

since it's so hard to do..

Maybe as an idea for a cool expansion or a buyable DLC. (Would be worth the cash..)

I can think of one reason why they didnt include this.

Snow covers foliage and pushes down the grass etc. And with a spanking new foliage system (Linda) in place, who wouldnt want to do that justice and bring out huge amounts of goodlooking foliage instead of a 'barren' snowland?

I would very much like to see the next game be a winter themed one. Something we have not yet seen originally, and all mods and islands have not been too successful at recreating.

So, when Arma3 comes along with a full snow theme, we can try out walking on skis, fighting cold weather, engines that won't start etc. Then Arma3 is finally patched all up, and they should concentrate of a full year cycle version for Arma4...

BIS doesn't need a planning department. We can do that for them, for free... Money saved, lol :D

We had winter mods in OFP

(I think) we had some in Armed Assault

I'm sure, in due course, someone will make something with snow in it.

My hope is that we will not go through all the work of making 4 (or more different) season island terrains of Cherberus, which is a lot of work for not the best result. The best result is if all of the seasons are made and can be dynamically blended! If you put the mission date to January 1 then you get super snowy, April 1 you get spring green, but February 15 you get something half way between.

Hell yeah!

Sounds good enough to me.

Also add how long the day is and you have a winner.

Add how long the days is... Is already implemeted in this series. Moon cycles and tides and starsystem. Go play ARMA2 now instead of dreaming of christmas.

Yeah, the sun, moon, tides and stars are all calculated accurately based on time, date, and lat/long coded into the island terrain config. This has been the case since OFP.

I'm still looking forward to atmospheric weather and seasonal terrain effects (snow, tree and grass color) that are date dependent.

There's winter kolgujev in CWR ^_^

Thickness between the visible surface and the structural surface.

Surface physics properties altered (coefficient of friction for one)

Appropriate particle effects

Appropriate surface sounds

Walking slows you down significantly depending on how deep and hard the snow is.

Stamina effects when walking in snow.

Can be countered with skies and snowshoes. Skies great unless in slopy uphill terrain. Snowshoes makes you slow but doesn't affect stamina as much.

Weather effects that simulates physiological effects like i.e. freezing and wind chills.

Weather specific inventory items to counter the effects of weather.

Ice strenght. Taking a bath would be a very bad idea.

Try it all in an all winter setting. then it would be natural to expand these ideas (if it worked) into a full year cycle campaign. And after that we could have a full ear cycle with varying effects instead of switchable. Doing it all for the next game would be suicide with all the new bugs that would surface.

I wonder where you'd put grounded weapon/magazine items on snowy terrain. If you placed them on the hard surface it would be easy to lose them. I know terrain can control vehicle movement and the player soldier is just a vehicle so he can be slowed down based on thickness of snow. I figure breath clouds and stamina effects can be tied to temperature (same for very hot temperatures).
