PC wont start... what the!!!???

Recommended Posts

Okay...

This is kinda not good but hopefully one of you wonderfully helpful techies may have an answer???

I went out and grabbed 2G RAM... Made sure they where the right ones for my dated motherboard... (ASUS P4B533)... Then installed them... Now when I boot I get this "No video output" from my monitor and an annoying "beeeeeeeeep" sound from the motherboard?

I then took the RAM out... Put the old stuff back in and with the same results. I then took the video card out cleaned the connections via a rubber and still no joy... I made sure the power was off and the cable disconnected each time I did anything... Any ideas!!!???

Man I need a new rig... This is getting boring... Thanks in advance for any constructive ideas...

Im not sure what kind of pc you have or what kind of motherboard you have but I figured you were a little more experienced. When the compute boots up follow instructions to go to setup usually mine is the delete key. You can go in the bios and reset this way. As I said before I dont know the manufactuer but you could accidently change settings that were set by the manufactuer and this could cause other problems so I suggest reading up on it a little. If all else fails and you just want to try something else then just pull the battery off the mobo for a few seconds then put it back in. This should reset it.

Have you tried switching memory slots ?

edit: is it a long continuous beep ?

roger...

I didn't touch the CMOS... BIOS... I had it set up fine... But I installed new RAM... all my kits about 5 years old now so I had to find the older ram... and the motherboard a ASUS P4B533 can only work up to 2G RAM... Sooooo... I installed this ram and turned on my PC to an audible tone of long beeps, which means I have no RAM...??? Plus I can't get a picture on my monitor to even tell my CMOS/BIOS to use the RAM I gave it... I'm not sure if the "No video output" is part of no RAM.

I then turned off the rig, unpluged, removed batt on mobo, put jumper on CLRTC and nada... I also tried the old RAM, before and after the "reset", but I got the same result... Long beep after long beep (No RAM)... ALso ASUS seems to have had their tech support vanish from the internet... odd...The gods hate me...

The RAM is properly seated in the slots right ? (it can be rather "difficult" on some boards).

Could be a damaged slot though...

I have also seen this happen before when the HD wasnt properly fastened. Maybe check other components even though you havent touched them. Ive also had problems with my 24pin power connector not being fastened as well. All these little things can happen pretty easy. I sure hope its something simple like that rather than having to purchase a new GPU.

As do I... My army savings is gone now... so I'd be without a PC for a long time... Ouch... But I'll check that stuff out... Thanks for your suggestions...

PC not starting due to RAM can be many things. Check they really are correct for your MoBo. Check that they sit in the right slots (2 RAM modules sit in slot 1 and 2. Not 3 and 4 etc). Try remove one of them and test one at the time to see if one is failing on you and wont start the PC due to that. This is the first steps to take. If you have RAM that suits the MoBo you dont have to do anything but install it.

Im guessing youve done all of this so far?

yeah I did try that... Plus I tried the old RAM that worked for years... But even with them in the mobo wont recognize the old ones or new ones... makes that long beep sound... manual says that means "no RAM"...

STUMPED

Sounds like you need a new mobo. Im sure your gpu is fine. Have you tried just 1 stick of old ram and try each slot byitself? Anyways mobo's are pretty cheap if that is the case. You may be able to take it to a local pc shop and they can check it for free maybe?

... new rig... ...

You will need to clear the CMOS. It may be jumpers, or even your Power and Reset buttons at the same time. BUT You will need your MANUAL. You will use your old ram and use just one Stick nearest the CPU.

Its most likley a voltage issue you need to set in your bios, that WILL have to be fixed for the new RAM, through a Bios update. Flash Bios with USB is best, but floppy will work

You can do it, its only a computer ( back up all your stuff ect.) Oh and MANUAL read it. Also more info on your kit, RAM type/speed/cl. brand

If you left the power connected to the pc when changing ram, or didn't discharge the current on the MB (by turning computer "on" after disconnecting power) chances are you just wasted your MB/Ram

Reset bios by jumper (also make sure no power is connected!). (you should find a tiny plastic thinghy with the word "cmos" on your mainboard, you'll find it's connecting 2 pins, but one pin is free, you have to reseat it so it covers the free pin, and then put it back in the original position)

If that doesn't work, you can find the CMOS battery (it's normally a round battery like in wristwatches, but bigger) remove the battery and connect the 2 poles of the seat it was in with a screwdriver (you can also just wait a couple of minutes). Put back in the battery, seat your original memory (1 bar at a time) and try booting up the pc.

In some rare occasions you can fix your problem by removing the cpu and reseating the cpu. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE as you can easily ruin the little feet under the cpu (if it has those).

By far the best option may be to look for a friend that knows how to fix pc's or take it to a local shop.

GOOD LUCK

Yeah, clearing the CMOS by turning off your Power Supply switch, pressing the power button to drain the caps, moving the CMOS Clear jumper to CLEAR, wait a minute, restore the jumper to prior position, etc...

along with re-installing your old RAM should do the trick.

Getting the exact same BIOS beep with the CMOS cleared and the old RAM replaced doesn't make a lot of sense - as long as everything is properly seated. PC parts are pretty resilient and can probably take more abuse than anything you did while swapping RAM (as long as it wasn't powered on when you did this).

I used to use a wrist strap. Then I went to anti-static gloves. Now I just say the heck with it and just make I give the case bare metal a good massage with my hands to equalize the potential. And I live in New Mexico where humidity averages what? 10-15%? I can't even touch my dog with shocking the crap out of her.

Yeah, I'd also remove the battery first. Clearing CMOS solves a lot of booting problems :D

Found that your motherboard has a 4xAGP slot. You have to make sure the video card you put in it is compatible with that.

No legacy support for older AGP Video Cards.

The site I got the info from: Asus_P4B533

Ah, I read that it was working before you put your new ram in, so that would be the focus of inquiry I suppose.

Untill he can confirm his abillity to reset the CMOS and or Flash his Bios, Or get into his Bios to up the voltage for his RAM, Or even tell us the type of RAM he bought, we can only guess.

Well the oroginal RAM worked... So I tried to put it back in and reset the CMOS from there... No joy... I read the manual and did exactly what it said and nothing... still it starts and I get the tell tail beeeeeeeeeeep, stop, beeeeeeeeeep, etc... NO RAM... Not good... So I tried one stick in the front slot... New and old... nothing... tried a reset each time... nothing... So it has to be somting else other then the sticks unless all four have packed it it... that would be the opposite of good...
