Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.

Recommended Posts

For some time I`ve been wondering: what type of CPU would be best for ArmA2? Of course I`ve heard that the multi-core CPU would be required. The question is whether this would be the 2 Core or 4 Core one?

It depends. Arma2 does scale to four cores, but if you're faced with either getting a slow quad core or a fast dual core, you'll probably be better off with the fast dual core.

A fast quad core will obviously be better than either of the above, but they are also more expensive. It really depends on your budget.

Fast quads are indeed more expensive but note that the (170 eu) i5-2500K already is the "ultimate" cpu for arma, within a few % of the 2600K and no difference if you set the clockspeeds yourself.

you can save a little bit by getting an i5-2400 (145) and overclocking it to 3.5Ghz, but that's the maximum intel will allow.

If you want to save more a phenomIIx4 955 BE (95 eu)is probably the best choice. After that the AthlonIIx3 triple core (only 60 euro's)

Im running a Core i7 2.67GHz at 3.90GHz in air cooling without any problems. There are no problems running Arma2.

Im going to be upgradeing to a Sandybridge from an XP core 2 duo set up and wanted to know what detail level and fps I can expect (in general)?

Windows 7 64

Intel SB 2500k (stock speed at first then OC to 4.5/4.8GHz)

G.Skill RipJawsX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C9 OR would I denefit from 8 gig?

Gigabyte GTX 460 slight OC

Corsair 650W TX

Western Digital Black 600

If youve recently upgraded from a Core 2 Duo let me plz, thanx guys.

I found the upgrade from duoCore to Sandybridge to be a profound one. Huge improvement in performance especially in Arma2. Sitting at a modest 4.6 OC which so far seems rock stable.

Funny, I added another 460gtx to run in SLI a week ago and have them OC'ed 850/1700/2080 and improved my 3dMark11 by 1400 points yet my Arma benchies remain almost the same with maybe 2-3 fps improvement.

Sandy is the way to go!

Sweet, tbh im buying the i5 2500k just for ArmA II (hence why I don't play it much) ive never been able to properly enjoy ArmA II when the gfx arent great and the fps drops into the teens.

Do you run 4 gig of ram or 8 gig? It would save me some money if I were to only buy 4 at first and maybe get a better after market cooler rather than using the stock Intel one, oh I can't use a socket 775 after market cooler on the 1155 socket can I?

Nope, unless that cooler has brackets for socket 1156 (same holes as 1155) as well, maybe there's an aftermarket bracket for it.

Or you can buy an asrock P67 extreme 3 or 4, they also have the 775 holes. But I wouldn't buy asrock because they dont have a very good reputation where reliability is concerned.

4 GB is a stretch nowadays. Even so, if You want it only for A2, 4GB should suffice.

and no, 775 and 1155 have different holes layout for coolers

Thats what I thought well thank you anyway :), im gonna see how much 8 gig of RipjawsX is.

not true. im using my "old" Alpenphön Nordwand" which was placed on a socket775 board now on a 1155 board with a sandybridge, so you can use your old cooler

Just saw it...for sure not the stock one

it depends on the cooler you want to use on the 1155 board. the alpenphön nordwand for example has larger wholes to fit on the 1155 and also on the 775 and some AMD processors. the stock cooler wount fit since you cant adjust anything.

Its a Zalman and im pretty sure you cant adjust it, oh well another selling point when I go to sell my E8400 :).

I use 8gigs of Corsair Vengeance 1600. I like extra ram if I'm in a RamDisk mood plus its just nice to know you have it :)

With the stock cooler I was able to get some decent overclocks but the 2500K is SO overclock friendly your going to want a better one to really see what she can do. I fried my first Sabretooth mobo when applying backplate so I went thru a few coolers and stuck with like a $30 push-pin one that works fine. Also make sure your mobo is overclock friendly -I bought a cheaper Gigabyte H-67 as a temp replacement while waiting for my RMA -it could only OC to 3.7 -a crime when playing with the 2500K.

Let us know how it goes -I'm excited for you as this was one of those upgrades that you really "feel".

ok, so im getting a choice between two laptops from my ''workplace'' and i was thinking im going to get the one MOST likely to run armaII, i know that neither of them probably will. But which one would you guys put your money on?

1: Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 2.53 GHz

* ATI HD5145 1G DDR

* 4096 MB DDR3 1066

2: Intel Core i5 450 M(think its 2.4 ghz)

4 GB ram

NVIDIA GeForce 310M

ok, i guess the info is knda vague and there's not too much difference between the two, but what would you guys go for?

Yes, the first one has a slightly faster gpu, still terrible of course :)

I did the same mistake with the PH Board:rolleyes:

But to be true, there will be not need to OC that CPU for the next 2 years. If Arma2 runs smooth with the 2500k´s stock speed you know what youre talking about. also you got reserve till 3.7 Ghz with the turbo which isnt that bad. But sure, if you going to buy the 2500k get a Board without the "H".-if possible so you got very big reserves for the future.

Would this computer run arma2

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Xtreme_XT/

Everything is the same but I changed the powersupply to a

800 Watts - XtremeGear Gaming Power Supply - Quad SLI Ready

Witch I heard was bad, so going to change it to a corsair brand, (I think)

I ordered this computer may 14th, hoping it will come soon.

Please answer, I really don't know much about computers, and I hope I post this in the right topic because I could not find any with computers.

Thanks

That's a machine with an outdated i7 in it, you can get a faster machine for less. some other machine on the same site. I recommend replacing the default gpu with the gtx560ti. That'll be faster and cheaper.

edit: well, you already ordered it, it'll run fine I guess, should be faster than what I run it on. Corsair psu's are generally good, but you will not be using anywhere close to 800W. More like 300W in games.

With the announcement of Arma3, it might be wise to spend a little or a lot more cash on a new machine.

I recently bought a new machine, and fear that ill have to spend more cash on it in a years time.

Easily. The i7 960 may use the outdated 1336 socket but there's no denying it's still damn powerful. Especially with a good OC.

The 6870 is a nice card, I would have gone for a GTX 560 :)

but the 6870 will still play A2OA smoothly on high settings.
