Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.

Recommended Posts

I have a 3 GBs of RAM in my PC with a NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Graphics card. Yes I know its bad, but I am getting an HD Radeon 6850. Also, My processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60 GHz. Do you think Arma will work? I really want to play it seeing that it is top on the Steam Store. Talking about steam, Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead have a bundle together for $22.00, when is that offer ending? Thanks in advance ;)

That cpu is pretty slow but it'll run. will be quit slow in cities or with lots of ai.

In multiplayer the server calculates the ai, so that should run reasonably. but you'll have to keep the cpu related settings very low to run at playable fps.

you cant run demanding games on that laptop and you cant upgrade it unfortunately.

if you really want to run games on a laptop you'll have to buy a new one yes. desktops get you more peformance for the same price, especially in the long run, dont have to upgrade case, psu, keyboard, mouse, screen, harddrive usually.

CPU - i5

Hdd - ssd

GPU - The most expensive your budget can get

ram - 6-8GB depending on motherboard

os - WIN7 64bit

You should be good with these setting

So should this be good enough?

Bear in mind I'm looking for running Arma III on medium-low (I'm asking for a estimation as no one can really tell) at a very good FPS (30-40)

yeah, a quadcore mobile i7 with a 650m should be fine for mostly medium.

ok ive now selected a 560ti gpu and a case. still trying to figure out how the ssd caching thing works. i might just get a larger ssd and get 1 or 2 tb hdd later. time to start working more overtime. man this is getting me excited now. i havent been this excited since i built a new machine for flashpoint. i miss those days (and my old clan).

the ssd cacheing works by installling windows on the harddisk and turning the cacheing on. but ssd's have become cheaper now, if you find one large enough for all your games and software that's faster.

but games are very large, every total war game is 15GB or something, max payne 3 is 30GB, with all the steam sales a ssd is filled quickly.

SSD is just a hard disk that have really fast loading speed, it's really helpful in arma because it increase the object loading speed like houses and etc making you get less lag in the game. The downside is the size is pretty small, so you might want to make it as a secondary hard disk and only install games that you want to have faster loading speed into it like arma 2 or skyrim.

You can use the ssd as your main window drive, but then it will be wasted on those download files and windows update which gonna take a lot of space.

Should be okay, but in my opinion an i5 or i7 processor would be preferable.

ArmA 2 doesn't fully utilise Triple cores or Quad cores, I think

Hi,

I followed the link to the "can you run it" website and it says my computer has the capability to run ARMA II, but when downloading the setup freezes at some point and never completes.

Any suggestions on what to do, or can anyone point me to a working thread that deals with this problem?

thanks!

OA does use up to 4 cores, albeit not at 100%

Save yourself some cash and some headaches (OA doesn't like HyperThreading) and go for the i5.

If you've got cash spare, get the biggest SSD you can afford (240GB?)

Yup, minimum i5, a ssd and invest the rest of your money on the biggest gpu you can get your hands on or a laptop that fit the criteria.

Hmm how about something like this?

AMD Phenom II X3 processor, 1TB Seagate hard drive, 4GB of DDR2 Ram, XFX NVidia GeForce 8600GT (1 DVI Port 1 SVGA port) graphics card with 512mb of dedicated video memory.

Would this be able to run in medium/low settings?

Yes, but on 1280 x 1024 resolution or maybe lower. You will lag if you play it on higher resolution. My old pc is that spec and i can play arma 2 fine at that res.

It runs smoother on winXp than win 7 tho.

Icehawk: good build it should comfortably run OA (provided you tweak it a little) and A3 (I think).

Great aspect of your build, is the possibility to overclock your 3570K which should prove very usually for both OA (higher View Distances) and A3.

Hello alltogether :)

I am looking at updating my system for/with Arma 3 in mind. My plan is to get a SSD and overclock my CPU right now and update the GPU when perhaps the GTX660 comes out later in August as rumoured.

Currently, I have an i7 860 @2.8 with the GIGABYTE H55M USB3 mainboard. Which CPU fan could you recommend for this combination with a targeted speed of somewhere around 3GHz? I looked at the Scythe Mugen 2 for a price of about 40€.

Can you also recommend a SSD in a price range of about 100€?

Thanks in advance!

Great idea to go with an intermediate upgrade.

Overclocking your i7 and SSD are equally smart choices.

The Mugen 2 is a great compromise of price and performance.

I'm not sure that you can do much better, but check-out silentpcreview.com if you really want peace of mind on that.

As for which SSD, I'd say that any the recent SSD from a major manufacturer should be fine, e.g. Crucial's M4 SATA III or Samsung 830 Series or OCZ Vertex 3

In any case, I'd opt for 128GB SSD because if you opt for a 64GB one, once you're installed your OS, all the latest patches and a couple of large games (CO + mods) you'll soon find yourself running out of room :(

Thank you domokun! I absolutely agree that a 128GB one would propably be the better choice concerning that my current BIS folder alone is already ~50 GB :o

I'll see what my retailer says and report back :)

Do we have someone with experience of overclocking an i7-860 here?

if you insist on SSD trying, pick something NOT based on SF controller.

SF didn't provide sustained performance, just mediocre burst read/write and usually lack decently-sized RAM-based cache.

preferably Marvel-based[Vertex/Indilux v4 or so], or LAMD would b ok.

for example, try OCZ. watch some SSD-related videos on Youtube, made by people for and about their SSD.

no offense, but IMO, switching to 2600k /2500k or 3770k CPU and mediocre OC[ie purchase CPU and GOOD cooler and bunch of fans 4 case]provide LOT more bang/bug ratio for Arma2.

and if you had some extra-cash, consider picking 3820 CPU and good S2011 mobo[i suggest Gigabyte UD5 or Asrock Extreme]. four-channel memory controller - ROCKS !! what more funny that lack of such feats, more bottlenecking entry-level CPU's, like intel/AMD APU's, cuz RAM bandwitch/latency impact on built-in GPU.

about CPU cooler, from inexpensive ones, aside Scythe Mine 2 i can recommend Termalright Silver Arrow 140[if it fits you CASE by height], Zalman CNPS14X, TR Macho2 and Cooler Master TX212EVO from sub-$30 price-range.

side-note:

even bigger[outside imaging pp workflow] effect can have slicing-down/decomposing/re-building Windows distribution media and use systems installed from them, for gameplay solely[different partition than "generic Windows" installation].

google about "vLite" and "RT7Lite" for reference.

kinda make you Win7 peform as quick as Win2k/WinMe does :P

I have an i5-750, overclocked to 4 Ghz, tried 4.2 also, but my cooling isnt good enough. 1156 overclocking is quite easy.

if it fits your case also look at the scythe mine 2, it's cheaper than the mugen 2 for some reason, cools a bit better because its even bigger.

as for ssd I'd get a 128GB samsung 830, does well in all realworld benches.

last two are of the GPU i'll put specs on later... nvm it just doesn't like tags.

first post last picture, the cable that goes to the case (power switch an such), is that connected right? it seems off center, if it's connected wrong the pc does nothing of course.

also, your psu is pretty old, lots of old psu's turn on, then they see a high load on 12V, nearly no load on 5 and 3.3V and they switch off again because they think something is wrong. in that case it would start for a second then turn off.

you can probably get the gpu to work by connecting it with a 4 pin molex to 6 pin pci-e, try to find out what cables are on what 12V line if you can, your psu has 2, if it's connected to the same line your comp will turn off when you start a demanding game.

I hardly suppose anybody to read page 843... hmmm.

Of course there are thousands of tests and comparisons of graphic cards out there. But since I'm mainly playing BIS games, I just thought to collect one or another opinion here. I'd like to replace the GRAPHIC CARD ONLY. 1680x1050 is the native resolution of my screen (actually I really don't see the reason why people more and more tend to sit in front of cinema canvas on their desks that can be measured in square metres).

The price limit is ~300 €. I thought of something like a Radeon 7870.

Is ATI vs Nvidia more than a fanboy question?

I'd like to enjoy Arma II further on (on really high settings and viewdistance in Chernarus) and be prepared for Arma III.

Current system:

Windows 7 64bit

Asus P67 Sabertooth Rev.

Intel i7-2600 @3.4GHz

Corsair 16MB DDR3-1600

SSD SATA 6GB/S

Sapphire HD5770 Vapor-X 1MB

@1680x1050
