Will my PC Run this? What CPU/GPU to get? What settings? System Specifications.

Recommended Posts

Hej, hej!

It supports 4, the question is how fully it uses those 4, people have reported mixed results.

1, im a noob att computers.

I wonder how i over clock my computer. Its a q9559, 4 mb ram, nvidia geforce GTX 285 1gb, vista 32.

2, where do i get the newest drivers to this card, and how do i install them?

3, how do i mark the ingame map, for example if i lay a map and want my teammates to know that its a mine ther. Doubble click is a bad option, it creates a big black kross over the map. I have seen others mark sophisticated marks in diffrent colors

thanx

Basically controls how much video memory the game allocates.

Too low allocation will cause the game to swap a lot (can cause texture loading delay), too high may cause crashes, default will let the game chose on its own.

So, the best setting is always "very high" (without crashes)?

Cheers

If you don't know how to, you probably better do not try to overclock your system yourself, but ask someone to help you with it - you might do some serious harm if done wrong.

If you still want to do it on your own, search the internet for overclock and tweak guides.

But as I said, make some wrong settings in your BIOS and you might have some serious trouble to get your PC running again, if at all...

2, where do i get the newest drivers to this card, and how do i install them?

First from your GFX adaptor vendor (Asus, MSI, Sapphire, XFX,...), second from the GPU manufacturer (usually Nvidia or ATI/AMD), last from some 3rd party website, e.g. computer magazines, 3DGuru.com, .... Installation is usually as simple as unpacking and executing the setup program. Requires usually little to no further interaction.

3, how do i mark the ingame map, for example if i lay a map and want my teammates to know that its a mine ther. Doubble click is a bad option, it creates a big black kross over the map. I have seen others mark sophisticated marks in diffrent colors
Not really subject for this thread, but you can do this by a double-click on the map. After the double-click you can write a text and with the arrow keys you can change the symbol of your marker. Edited by WhoCares

I have heard that this game runs much worse on Windows 7 64 bit than it does in XP. Can anyone confirm this and if so how big is the difference in performance ?

I have a phenom II X4 955 BE 3.8ghz, 4GB Ram, 4890 and the game doesnt run very smooth on high settings.

Is it worth me creating a 2nd XP partition to play arma 2 on ? is the performance increase big enough to warrant the hassles of creating a 2nd partition for one game.

It actually runs better than both xp and vista, it is much smoother on windows 7 64bit as long as you have 4GB+ of RAM than windows xp 32-64bit and vista

there must be something wrong with your setup, as I have xp64 and 7 installed and exactly the same setup as you, except a stock clock speed on the 955, and im getting great performance in both.

xp64 superior edition is slightly better.

i have 4gb ram and my setup is fine, i can max out other intensive games such as Crysis with ease and still get 30+fps

Arma 2 however... runs like absolute turd

Odd im running everything maxed on my specs at 18-30 FPS, But if i tone down shadows and AA to normal i get 28-40 FPS. Are your drivers updated? what settings do you run it on? what patch are you running?

you need to get latest patch which is 1.2 then your performance issues should be gone. 1.0 was horrible and caused everyone to have performance problems..especially having low fps..

So I'm considering GPUs to upgrade to. I'm thinking around GTX 260. I see there are many cards with this name and I'm unsure what to look for. For instance, what is the better of these two:

http://www.gainward.com/main/vgapro.php?id=116

http://www.gainward.com/main/vgapro.php?id=106

Is the first better solely due to more MBs, or are there other things that are equally important?

You'd be better off with either a 1GB HD4870 or 1GB HD4890.

Russianguy: There is no 1.2 patch, 1.02 is the latest one.

Is there anywhere I could download the benchmark mission? I don't want to use a 3rd part software and really don't wanna download and install the demo just to check FPS...

What View Distances are you guys using?

Obviously it depends on each PC setup, but is there some general sweet spot where you see a big increase in distance with a minimal drop in performance?

I've been messing around with all the other graphics options and repeatedly running the benchmark from the demo, but haven't messed with the view distance because I was under the impression that servers lock that so everybody is on the same level.

As for the other graphics options, everything seems to have very minimal impact (between "low" and "very high") except for Anti-Aliasing, Shadows, and Post Processing.

I ran the benchmark first with everything set to "low" (and my resolution was 1680x1050 along with the 3d rendering). I increased each setting individually one at a time to "very high" and ran the benchmark after each single change.

So with my system, I had to ditch any sort of Anti-Aliasing. It was an easy 5-10 frames per second. That doesn't sound like much in normal circumstances, but when you're in the 30-40 range, it's huge. I also turned off Post Processing, which makes me dizzy anyway so that was an easy choice. I settled for Shadows to "normal" (which is the lowest it goes before turning off completely). I notice a big bump with no shadows, but the game just becomes too plain with no shadows. The difference between shadows "normal" and "very high" seems to be another 7 frames per second.

So right now I'm running everything at "high" except for the 3 I talked about above. I'm at a steady 30-35 frames per second. It's not great, but at least it's in the minimum range for me where it's at least playable. Seems like a good middle ground for me. When I crank up everything to the max, i'm at about 15-20fps. When I'm at the minimum settings, the game runs in the 35-40fps which isn't even that good to begin with.

My system is getting old, but I've been able to run everything maxed out until Crysis and Arma II came around, heh.

overclocked C2D e6750

4 gigs high speed gaming RAM

nvidia 8800 gts (512mb)

Think about it, how could you run the benchmark mission without having the game? Obviously the demo has more than just the benchmark, but if the demo only contained the benchmark, the size difference wouldn't be that big. Just download it and leave it run overnight.

PBZ -

Thanks for the detailed info, just out of curiosity, what OS are you using to run this. It seems like you're getting pretty good results with the equipment you're using.

Vista 32-bit

I don't know how much it has helped, but I have done several tweaks to my OS. For example, I turn OFF many services or features I don't use. My startup and background services are very minimal, and I use a couple windows cleaning and registry cleaning programs etc.

It will probably run fine (try the demo sure).

I somehow doubt that your CPU is running at the 5.7GHz, sure it's not 2x2.85GHz?

I copied and pasted the info for System Requirement Labs.
