dotted 0 Posted August 14, 2008 My TrackIR. Overhyped gimick. Waste of money.
odjob 0 Posted August 14, 2008 I love the offer, but tragically enough I can't find anywhere close to Sweden that sells it, and the freight from US is as much as the TrackIR itself. Sad situation for a poor student  I bought mine from: http://www.flightsimshop.se/ a year ago. Delivery within a week, very good service.

SWAT_BigBear 0 Posted August 15, 2008 dotted, you should give yours to someone whom can use it. The old thread about the differences between Freetrack and TrackIR, if I remember it correctly, showed a few capabilities of TrackIR.....that Freetrack can not do. Maybe NaturalPoint - Vincent will reply here and remind us. I personally wish all games supported it.
Tankbuster 1744 Posted August 15, 2008 Purely in terms of value for money, Track-IR is still better but the gap has certainly closed. For the uninitiated, Track-IR software with Track Clip Pro hardware is certainly a very good compromise.

CharveL 0 Posted August 28, 2008 judging from the manufacturers page it looks like track ir is using a webcam with ir lights and passive reflectors at the point model. With track clip pro being an active point model.A very sensible solution for people who don't want to work on a point model could be to buy only the track clip pro, and use it with a random webcam and open source tracking software. Even if buying a good webcam it would cost about the same as the track ir, with the advantage of having a webcam that can be used for something else also. And the even bigger advantage of not paying money for the software (i always have a bad conscience if i do). I haven't tried it however, and i don't have experience. Better ask the lads at freetrack etc if it would work. Unfortunately that is not the case. TrackIR uses a special IR receiver running at much higher polling rates than a webcam. Additionally the field of view is larger than a webcam and there is less cpu overhead. Still, a software/webcam based solution can give you the idea - although framerates and proper tracking/resolution might end up turning you off head-tracking altogether - and you can at a later point upgrade to the better alternative when you can afford it. I can't bring myself to bother firing up ArmA without it to be honest. Being able to run and look over your shoulder or drive and look into the turn like a real vehicle is too much of a sense to lose.
TWCRASH 0 Posted September 13, 2008 yeah I built The same thing for less than 20 Bucks using Free Track as well. It works really well for those on a Budget and probably 2 hours worth of serious tinkering on making the stuff (wasn't hard really). A great project to do on the side if you like this kind of stuff
