Exploration?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new to ArmA, just bought the game yesterday. I came here from playing the Project Reality mod from BF2, kudos to the PR development team for turning an incomplete game into a better product and winning plenty of awards in the process.

While I enjoy ArmA and its superior graphics, it has disappointed me in some ways, including a poor VOIP system, little teamwork in the gameplay, etc.

I'm wondering if there is a way that I can explore the island with cities full of civilians, enemies to engage, and vehicles to use on single player (for those of you who have played Mercenaries, that's the kind of gameplay I'm seeking). Is there a way to do this? If not, is there a way I can set up a mission to do this? Thanks.

Greetings fellow PR player! biggrin_o.gif

Indeed the public teamwork and nonexistent use of VOIP in ArmA is truly inferior to PR, very sad thing really. confused_o.gif

As, for the and explorable island with population there's always the editor to play with, maybe some has made a similar mission?

Teamwork and so on is dependent on the mission. Mess around with the mission editor and you'll see just how much you can do with this game with a bit of imagination. VOIP works just fine I find, just people tend not to use it in favour of the old TS or Vent.

I only find it useful for direct communication, like talking to someone in front of you. with an animated mouth! biggrin_o.gif

An easy way? Not really, to make it enjoyable we should have a system like DAC (for OFP) in ArmA, currently the mission editor is mostly a 'scenario editor', while in theory you could make a fully dynamic war on a populated island it would require alot of scripting to keep it working properly without totally killing your FPS.

And if you want teamwork i suggest you find a coop group/squad/clan/whatever, most people in public servers are retarded. biggrin_o.gif

Hey Spartan135.

I go by [R-PUB]Garabaldi on the PR forums, and am apart of the Public Relations team for the mod. I don't recognize you, but I'm not good with names, so don't take it personally tounge2.gif.

Indeed, public games in PR are about 100x better than public games in ArmA. I suggest you join a squad, or at least an organized group of players. If you're interested, check out RGG (http://rggsquad.co.uk). I'm fairly certain every member plays PR actively. We have R-MOD's, R-DEV's and R-PUB's in our ranks. Check the website for more info.

Good luck smile_o.gif.

Whatever public server I join, I find there're always a few potential teamplayers waiting for someone to show some initiative and leadership. Alot of player are ready to join up, often you get as much as you give.

These feature can be modded into the game.

Why do people compare vanilla Arma to a MOD of aother game. You're comparing a new game to a mod that refined an existing game. Not quite fair. If people want the Project Reality features why don't they make them. In the same manner that it was done in BF2. I played the original BF2. Compare this game to that one.

if both were water in a 12 oz glass ...

bf2 is 1/4 full.

arma is 1/2 full with a faucet adding more water to it.

Why couldn't they be compared together? A mod is played just like a vanilla game. You say it like modding any feature at all is a piece of cake. Why haven't you made a dream game mod for ArmA that fixes every problem in it?

That's my point!

Comparing a DREAM mod of a game to an un-modded game. They are NOT easy to do so a modded game should NOT be compared to an un-modded one.

The modded game is the one that has been perfected!

PS: I know I'll get mis-quoted even though I'm writing. All is forgiven if English is not the 1st language.

In that case the mod is simply better, you can't say what can't be compared in terms of being fair to game developers who were beaten by amateur mod makers.

That is just out of line and a slap in the face of all game developers. Why must you insult them? I don't see the point in that and it's very rude.

You have just stated very clearly how you feel towards BIS and I will pursue the matter no further.

I'm sorry, I insulted the devs by saying that comparing a mod and a vanilla game is OK. You're right and I'll get out of this thread.

Forgive me for my lack of understanding, but this debate seem somewhat diffuse to me, what are you exactly arguing about?

Are you comparing Project Reality game play to ArmA, or public community behavior? I don't quite follow, in either case the way I see it is that PR has a superior teamwork oriented community where teamplay is easily found on public servers at (for the most part) any given time, PR however is somewhat limited in terms realism due to BF2 engine limitations and the modders goals for the mod.

ArmA however is a bit the opposite where I personally have a hard time finding mature and teamwork oriented teamplayers in public servers, active use of VOIP in a public server seems non existant, however ArmA without a doubt superior in terms of realism.

There is no one to blame except the community in this case, BIS can't be responsible for lone wolf behavior, server admins and mission makers are the most responsible here, you guys are the ones who decide what mission types are made and played.

I dunno.. I'm not a member of a clan but in the last few days I've been playing Evo and had some wicked teamwork moments. GBU bombing while someone laser designates targets is spectacular, and seeing 12 guys dismounting from your chopper simultaneously and spreading out to assault a town is pretty cool too.

Question - is VOIP essential for membership in a squad/clan? That's really what's stopping me from joining one.

And I dunno if someone's suggested it but the single player version of Evolution is a good way to test out all the vehicles and weapons, no civvies but more enemies to kill than you can shake a stick at. Gotta unlock the weapons and vehicles first tho which can be a pain.

Celery, don't be so sneery.

Let's see how the "amateur mod makers" get on at making a better game if they have to code it from the ground up rather than stand on the shoulders of the people who produced the game...and made it possible to mod it without too much difficulty...?
