Armed Assault

Recommended Posts

I must be honest and say as a long time member and supporter of this community, I am very dis-heartened by the state and progress of Armed Assault. I played OFP from the day it hit the shelf until the day ArmA was released, and I was ruined for all other games.

The entire concept, gameplay and freedom of OFP was, and still is unseen anywhere else. That same concept 5+ years later still stands. But now we have ArmA and the cummunity expectations were high in anticipation of this game. The expectations of better graphics and the lessoins from OFP learned and corrected.

But instead we got a game that had the same issues and bugs as OFP as well as 80% more. This community is forgiving and loyal, but I feel that loyalty is being abused.

The state of ArmA at its release was nowhere near worthyness of sale. There was not a single aspect of ArmA without bugs or issue. Right down to script errors in the missions!? I can only speculate as to the reasons to release a game in that state but here is the issue...

The announcements preseeding the release were nothing short of total hipe!!! You built this game up to be something amazing. It was advertised as a "Simulator" not "archade" Yet very little of ArmA is real to life.

You have 4,6 and 8 wheel drive vehicles that wont get rolling if the wheels are turned, Hand held rockets that have way more hit power that a tank fired heat round, MK-19s that move whole vehicles when fired, slodiers that loose there weapons when they swim. Special Forces swim everyday with a full loadout AND fire from the water.

We are now on patch #6, and several months into the release and every patch released as yet has fixed some things and broke 10 things that weren't broken. There is a new OS out and you dont even support that. Who do you think will buy a game that wont run on the new PC they bought with Vista on it.

There are hundreds of games full of AI that cant shoot you through trees and walls, So it can be done. But it never happened in OFP and so far not in ArmA.

The bottom line is that this community has supported you through thick and thin, and you owe them more than they are getting from you. How can you take the people who believe in you and charge them to do all your beta testing, both for the game and the patches. Then repay them with basicly nothing. We get patch after patch and the game just changes, it doesn't get any better.

i understand your concerns. remember, we will never know the full extent of what transpired/transpires behind the scenes. after all, BIS is a buisness. they have to make money on their investment. publishers have demands that they must follow...

now as far as the patches are concerned... they are not THAT bad. i would say more things are fixed then broken, instead of the opposite that you are suggesting.

the way i see it, the game has only been truly out to the masses since this week (1.08 patch that unites us all).

i know they don't want to say it, but the way i see things, all the previous releases were essentially 'betas' that were released to all the hardcore fans.

i still have hope. i am truly loving 1.08 so far. i'll see you on the battlefield bro. in the meantime, try and have some fun.

I wholeheartedly disagree, I think BIS patch for patch compesate for the state 1.0 was released in. I believe it was a question of either a premature release, major arcade compromices to a worldwide publisher or an indefinite delay.

Sounds like you should have played the demo before your bought it. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. Maybe you can still return it. Also, there is a thread for complaints already.

Considering what the game does and what it is compared to other crap out there.

Im happy that it works as good as it does and it gets better and more stable all the time.

You might find some pointers in that, Arma could have been scraped and BIS could have gone developing for the mil only...

Got my copy at 1.4, playing and lovin it since the demo.

Dont deminish the intensive work and support that got the game this far. Many things were improved not because they really had to be..

An RPG was never more powerfull than a sabot/heat shell in my copy..

Soldiers shouldnt go surfing in combat, there are no us navy seals in the game... i understand that the new water is great and all but you should really stick with them boats.

Some things could be better but the same is true for every single game out there smile_o.gif .

lol have fun with that, somebody correct me if i'm wrong but codemasters is a publisher right? Anyways I disagree w/ the OP, while there are bugs, I would say this game is very playable(your playing it right now aren't you =p) and just keeps get better and better via mods and patches. You must be very naive to think a game will have better or the same performance than a game that has been out for 5 years(which was supported w/ mods and patches) to a game that was obviously rushed by the publishers.

While the bugs can be annoying look at BIS perspective. At least they are actively supporting the game. So instead of "writing a letter to BIS" head down to the complaint thread and specifically list each thing that you think needs to be fixed. Don't just say this game is 80% buggy and deem it unplayable. Help BIS fix the game. rant over

Here Here I agree with the Original Poster.

And for those of you that say 1.08 is the first full united patch, take a look in the other forum where many people are quite angry because 1.08 actually wont even start. I am one of those unlucky ones and now I can't play because the servers go to 1.08 and the only version that works for me is 1.05.

Cheers BIS banghead.gif

sorry to hear that it wont start for you, but it did start for us, and run normally, yes it might sounds unfair for you as basicly it is a single copyright protection that fuck you up, but then it is as unfair to BI to say it wont work for everyone because it didnt work for you

BuhBye has hit the nail on the head.

I've been playing OFP since it's initial release (and still do). I looked forward to ArmA as it was meant to be a development of OFP but instead it has all the bugs OFP was released with, and more. Add to that less units and less vehicles than OFP and it gets even less attractive.

Another thing you left off the list BuhBye that really bugs me is the way that every single ground vehicle is almost unable to travel on level flat ground unless it is covered by a sealed road. Last time I checked my car could drive on grass fine. How has this most basic of things been so overlooked? This "feature" really kills the reality of this "sim" for me.

I just hope that these things will get worked out quicker than it took with OFP.

My $0.02.

Well 4 in 1 on the opposing side because it works for you I guess everyone else can go to hell right?

I tend to think that BIS did the right thing by releasing the game as it was. (I must admit that I never had the very original problems, since I got the US version, which was already at 1.06.) I can easily see the decision they faced: release it, buggy as it was or drop the project. I'm a software engineer and I saw the same situation a few times in the past, and BIS (and people at BIS) has bills to pay - there is no good choice in a case like that.

Of course, I'm somewhat disappointed by seeing the bugs that are there in the game, but I also have faith in BIS, that they're working on them. (And I expect them, too, since now they have the income they needed.) And having it this way is still better than scrapping the whole thing, due to uninterest from big publishers. (Who, by that way, don't publish anything even remotely risky anymore. EA, anyone?)

I feel very sorry for those who still have all kinds of problems (I would be very frustrated if it happened to me) - I guess I'm lucky with my rig, but I don't feel cheated at all with ArmA so far. I ask you to think about this: would you be happier if the entire game was dropped? At least now you still have a chance of getting it working.

And to make it clear: I still expect BIS guys to keep fixing things - it's one thing that I'm not angry about the stunt they pulled to get money coming in, but of course I still want a well working game with features as advertised and expected. (And extra content, too. smile_o.gif ) But for now, I think they did a good job, even if others don't agree.

There are no qualms that I have serious issues with ArmA. That being said, I think it's important to refer to the article Heatseeker posted, specifically, this portion.

Quote[/b] ]Spanel: We released the game before Christmas in eastern and central Europe. The reason for this was simple: we ended up on our own with regards to everything. We're not a big company, and we had to release in order to get some income, it's as simple as that. There are sometimes not many choices you can make, it's either 'do something or do nothing'. We're completely independent developers and we didn't find a way to agree with any big publishers. A year ago, nobody believed in the game at all.

Just have a little patience.

Yep I am patient and I understand BIS situation, if only they could occasionaly acknowlege that there is an issue and they are working on it it might relieve some of the stress.

Anyway what will be will be, life goes on even without Arma.

I think Bis is a great developer team...

I've playing arma since Febraury... and Arma is a great game.

It's own scripting feature are awesome (in my opinion).

ANd the patch 1.08 has fixed a lot of trouble and added a lot of improvments.

Yes, there're some problems too...

But I think them all will be solved...

By the way:

This year I've bought one game:

It is Arma
