Basic Hand Signal's

Recommended Posts

Firstly hi to all wink_o.gif

I was wondering if (with the pysics in ArmA) it would be possible in a future patch to include some basic hand signal's?..I'd really like to see them ingame.(like in AAO for instance) smile_o.gif

For Flashpoint, someone made an addon that allowed you to do that. Considering you can now hear shouted commands, it would have a little bit more use. It wouldn't, to my knowledge, require any "physics," because it would just be animations.

Physics/Animations I'm not sure which of the two it would be TBh?

It'd be animations because its what the character model does nothing to do with physics really.

Hand signals would be cool but they require a big amount of awareness which is not always possible.

The first problem we would encounter in the clan would be that everybody would have to watch the first man instead of keeping an eye on his sector because the field of view the monitor gives is way too small.

Although it would be effective as on VOIP (i always dream of a real radio with "frequencies") you can hear your enemies talking when you are close. I remember that in the Reibert "The german soldier's handbook" is written that you can hear a whisper up to 50 meters (understanding is another pair of shoes). So to order and execute an attack when you have spotted the enemy it would be much more useful.

There can't be anykind of improvising involved in use of handsignals in game, like: Should i wave my hand only little bit so that enemy infornt of me doesn't notice it? Are my guys close enough to see my signals clearly (aka not messing them to another), so do i need to wave my hand very clearly? and so on...

Efficency of handsignals bases very much in these kinds of things + that slim FOV and that monitors have bad resolution (is handsignal noticetable from another from 10 meters?) + that player is usually goofing around and not watching his teammates or sticking in formation (essential for handsignals). So In-game they are pretty much useless = eyecandy.

I can think situation when leader of formation shows halt-signal (or enemy-signal), as he spots hostiles (hostiles spots group) -> every man in formation repeats that signal (so that everyone gets it) -> showing that signal lasts about 5 seconds (lesser amount in seconds are probably useless) -> hostiles wipe out whole group in that time (and i as dead group member do this to my monitor: banghead.gif )

Considering the problems with the atomicity of the ArmA

anims just now I could foresee real difficulty implementing

this in ArmA. I'd be pleased to be proved wrong though.

Thank's for the reply's..

I am only thinking of basic hand signal's i.e look this way/get down ect like the one's in America's Army for instance..they implimated it so i'm not sure how this can be so hard except (i know nothing about programming lol) the point that just about all commands are taken up by the comm's system in ArmA.

Unless when giving the command to go prone then the hand signal appear's?

It's only a wish to make ArmA even more realistic..and they are used IRL in the armed forces.;)

A hand signals addon would be excellent, I'd like to see them in a mission where chat has been disabled (except globalchat I guess). Forcing players to be within shouting distance and visual distance to communicate.

And having radio operators being the only ones who can communicate with other squads/aircraft/tanks etc.

It would be good if the "Direct communications" chat told you who said what, because the chat the way it is now can be confusing.

What about head movements? You can already nod your head up-down for "affirmative" and left-right for "negative". You could give these head movements other meanings if you wanted to and create more complex combinations. eg one left-right and one up-down means "I've got TrackIR and I'm stretching my neck."

For reference, here are troopers of 2 sqdn Australian SAS in

Vietnam demonstrating two of the most important "basic hand

signals"  whistle.gif

Hi, in addition to the spoken orders, make the units use booth com

methods, spoken and hand signals; will be great. But i don't like the

idea of do this as a mod or addon, this will be a great thing that BIS

should add in a future Patch instead some A-10, aside of keep

cleaning the amount of bugs already present in the ArmA 1.05 (EU).

Let's C ya

I'd display the hand signals as icons, so the squad might actually notice and understand the orders.

Not realistic but neither is the lack peripheral vision and men appearing to be about the size of lilliputs on your screen. Or having a bunch of twelve year old ADHD kids on a sugar rush as your squad.

Excellent idea.

Not sure if the die-hards would buy it though...

If the "hand signal" is an icon, how does that differ in any

important respect from a subtitle or a spoken or whispered

message on your "teamsay" (or whatever it's called)?

Exactly how it was done in the good ol' Seal Team. Actually, there were short animations rather then fixed images, if I remember correctly.
