plasman 0 Posted March 19, 2007 Quote[/b] ]UN SOLDIERS. By Plasman Version 1 ----------------------------- 1/ Description : Generic United Nations troops. I didn't intend to portray soldiers of any particular country. They replace the previous version beta version. 2/ Installation : Just unzip the UN_Soldiers.pbo file into the Addons folder of ArmA. 3/ The UN Soldiers can be found in the editor under : Independant - UN_Soldiers. 4/ Available Soldiers : - Officer. With blue beret and blue bulletproof vest. Main weapon: M4 - Squad Leader. Main weapon: M4 AIM - Team Leader. Main weapon: M16A2 - Rifleman. Main weapon: M16A2 - Medic. Main Weapon: M16A2 - Grenadier. Main weapon: M16A2-M203 - Squad Auto Riflemen. Mainweapon: M249 - AT Soldier. Mainweapon: M136 You will notice I (purposely) didn't include any sniper, AT or AA troopers: These UN troops are not supposed to engage in heavy fighting. 5/ Acknowledgements: Thanks to the people at BIS forum who helped me with their precious advices, and thanks of course for your past and future feedbacks/comments. 6/ Disclaimer: This addon is not an official BIS addon and is distributed without any warranty, so use it (in whole or in part) entirely at your own risk. This addon is a freeware and shall not be distributed/used (in whole or in part) for any commercial purpose. This addon may only be re-distributed in its entirety, complete with this "ReadMe" document. 7/ Known bug: Sometimes a "ghost" strap appears on the Rifleman's helmet while it shouldn't, I've normal mapped the helmets so that normally there is no helmet straps, but somehow sometimes it's not working on the rifleman's model, although the path to the noHq texture is right. Balschoiw 0 Posted March 19, 2007 Just some things I noticed: - UN helmets and UN helmet covers do have "UN" written on the left and right side and have the UN symbol at the front side - There are no UN boonie hats - UN barrets have a solid UN Symbol attached to them Quote[/b] ]You will notice I (purposely) didn't include any sniper, AT or AA troopers: These UN troops are not supposed to engage in heavy fighting. That´s irrelevant as those are units of self-protection and are always aboard with UN missions except the AA units maybe. I know this is a retexture mod only. Maybe that´s why you chose to go that way.
plasman 0 Posted March 19, 2007 Thanks your feedback Balschoiw Quote[/b] ]Balschoiw wrote : - UN helmets and UN helmet covers do have "UN" written on the left and right side and have the UN symbol at the front side Well it depends of the countries involved (French troops almost never wear UN lettering on their helmets for example). And there is already an addon with UN marked helmets around (Mailman653's one with stupendous Brazilian and Pakistanis troops), I wanted mine to look different. Quote[/b] ]Balschoiw wrote : - There are no UN boonie hats I've seen pictures of French UN troops with blue boonie hats. French troops actually employed snipers (to good use) in Lebanon (then Bosnia) and are even deploying heavy armours in Lebanon nowadays. Actually I didn't include heavy weapons to make sure UN troops in Sahrani would be outgunned most of the time (this makes a better challenge for the players). Stewy 1 Posted March 19, 2007 I believe the Swedes had blue bush-hats in Africa...can't remember which country off the top of my head...
sander 14 Posted March 19, 2007 Hi, Great stuff. === Not only can national practices vary, but it can even differ from mission to mission. Dutch marine corps UN units deployed to Cambodia as part of UNTAC for example wore blue helmets while those deployed to Eritrea and Ethiopia as part of UNMEE were issued blue helmet covers. Regards, Sander

Clavicula_nox4817 0 Posted March 20, 2007 Hey plasman, I don't know if it's intended, but the UN Crest on the officer's beret is quite slanted.
Shadow NX 1 Posted March 20, 2007 Its hard to get it right on the default texture layout, took me several tries till it looked right on my personal units. A hint, if you look closely at the texture you see the part where it bends upwards on the beret and there you should place it, hard to explain as im not at home but he may get the idea. If its in the right place it should already look bit rotated on the texture, then you can also skew it a bit to the side as ArmA will bend it later on the model. Probably im the only one understanding what i just wrote Also a lil personal suggestion about the Blue, if PS was used then id say play bit with the Hue/Saturation settings and tone down the colours quite a bit atm they really stick out. plasman 0 Posted March 20, 2007 Probably im the only one understanding what i just wrote No, no, I think I’ve understood,…mostly Will tilt the UN symbol counter-clockwise a bit and experiment tweaking the Hue/Saturation settings as well. Thanks for your remarks both of you
DecimusAquila 0 Posted March 20, 2007 Plasman, I wanted to ask if it is possible to dress 2 types of gunner units, one you already have done with green uniform, and blue helmet, but the second gunner to add with a blue vest and UN on his vest with a blue helmet in your next update. The reason is, we can mix the units, some with blue vests and some just green. This way we could also turn gunners into grenadiers, machingunners by playing with the addweapons commands in editors. I know it will be a big file if you made units with vest and without for all types. So I thought a possible good idea to just make one unit a default for others, most favourable will be the gunner. But just my thought. You can make the final descission. Â

DecimusAquila 0 Posted March 21, 2007 Looking great Plasman  Thanks for the Rifleman issue. Will be excellent for units mix in mission making. Cannot wait for your release, as said the key word is paitience.
Richieb0y 0 Posted March 21, 2007 nice job on those soldiers but i find it 2 dark greenish for my taste especaily on mid evening but they look realy good on the day
EricM 0 Posted March 21, 2007 Very Nice. Now I would desaturate the colors to make it a bit more worn/washed out and overlay a slightly brownish dirt map. Another trick is to make the exposed parts (bulges, seams) a bit more light/desaturated (used by weather and friction). It will help break the perfect blue layer and make it more believable
plasman 0 Posted March 27, 2007 Thanks for the advise EricM Just a little screenshot to the UN soldier with blue jacket :
Shashman 0 Posted March 27, 2007 Great stuff Plasman. The aid workers (UNHCR) will surely come in very handy in missions
plasman 0 Posted March 28, 2007 Good Day, This is just to advise you a new version (Beta 0.2) of the UN Soldiers is available. See the (updated) 1st page of this thread for download mirrors. Updated readme file : Quote[/b] ]UN SOLDIERS. By Plasman Beta Version 0.2 ----------------------------- 1/ Description : Generic United Nations troops. I didn't intend to portray soldiers of any particular country (although they were loosely inspirated by the Canadian/French troops of the early 90s) 2/ Installation : Just unzip the UN_Soldiers.pbo file into the Addons folder of ArmA. 3/ The UN Soldiers can be found in the editor under : Independant / UN_Soldiers. 4/ Featured soldiers : - Officer. With blue beret and blue bulletproof vest. Main weapon: M4 - Squad Leader. Main weapon: M4 AIM - Team Leader. Main weapon: M16A2 - Rifleman. Main weapon: M16A2 - Rifleman with blue vest. Main Weapon: M16A2 - Medic. Main Weapon: M4 - Grenadier. Main weapon: M16A2-M203 - Squad Auto Riflemen. Mainweapon: M249 - AT Soldier (with blue vest). Main Weapon M136 + M4 - UN Civilian. Main weapon:...binoculars and smoke grenades. Supposed to portray a UNHCR representative. 5/ Release notes: This is a beta version only. Helmets are still a little too flashy/clean for my (and many other people) taste. But implementing dust is proving more complicated than expected. I tried dark shades of blue and grey but I'm not 100% safisfied. I plan to add helmet straps, but it's not that easy too : a single pixel in the wrong place can ruin the whole helmet : it would have gone unoticed over a camouflaged helmet but not over a light blue surface. So watch for future improved versions. 6/ Acknowledgements: Thanks to the people who helped me with their precious advices when I was struggling with the config and P3D files, and thanks of course for your past and future feedbacks/comments. 7/ Disclaimer: This addon is not an official BIS addon and is distributed without any warranty, so use it (in whole or in part) entirely at your own risk. This addon is a freeware and shall not be distributed/used (in whole or in part) for any commercial purpose. This addon may only be re-distributed in its entirety, complete with this "ReadMe" .pdf document. 8/ Changelog Beta Version 0.2 Deleted the CPO Added Rifleman with blue Vest Added AT Soldier with blue vest Fixed the Officier's beret insigna Improved the UN civilian texture Enjoy, Plasman
