How to enable true HDR

Recommended Posts

Many people including me have problems with hdr, the image is oversaturating very easily, especially for example in the back of stryker.

By changing line HDRPrecision=8 in Arma.cfg to HDRPrecision=16 I was able to enable true HDR lighting (like in Oblivion for example) and fixed this problem compeletely.

Here are comparison screenshots (same mission, one with 8bit presision, other with 16bit)

And personally I havent seen smaller framerate with this enabled. The only downside is, that antialiasing is not possible on older graphics cards.

Great!!

Had this problem (screen 1) as well while walking around in the large hangars at the airport and looking to complete shadow parts inside it. Suddenly everything was very strange lightned. So the same problem like inside vehicles (everything is in shadow)

Have to test it when I get home smile_o.gif

Hmm, stangely setting it to 16 disabled HDR for me. I can now stare directly at the sun without being blinded... I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad, but atleast I can now disable it smile_o.gif

I have a 7900 GT. Maybe I have some strange combination of settings at the moment. Disabling the HDR didn't actually seem to increase my fps though...

It's in the 'my documents/arma' or '/arma other profiles' folder

edit: BTW, you all know that this DOES disable the use of AA with HDR same as in Oblivion

In Oblivion certain cards (ati 1x00 and up, dunno about nVidia cards, <s>probably 7x00's</s>) could use AA+HDR, i guess its the same for ArmA.

EDIT: Guessed wrong biggrin_o.gif

Nividia added support for 16bit hdr with antialiasing in GF8800 series.

The HDR in ArmA is great. No need to change it. Never seen anything like the first image. Must be a driver or card related error.

what are you smoking?

even aside from the occasional graphical glitches with HDR in ArmA HDR implementation is PATHETIC. Its better than nothing but its like getting a steering wheel and a tyre instead of the whole car. Your not really blinded by lights you can still see soldiers/planes/birds/etc, the effect doesn't last very long, the effect isn't strong enough, it can adjust textures to the point of making them look retarded but haze, blur and glare are weak. Light adjustment is too aggressive your screen shouldn't go from bright to dark just looking around, it should be a gradual process.

Forests for example they should appear dark from the outside and it will take you a minute or so after walking in to adjust and we should be seeing haze like this http://www.rosengren.net/photo/washington/large/Img0013c.jpg through the trees

It looks fine to me.

BTW, glare and blur aren't HDR processes. Those would be other per-pixel-shading post processes in the same way that normal maps aren't HDR. The 16 bit hdr doesn't make much of a difference anyways. It desaturates slightly, and apparently stops blacked-out colours from normalizing back to mid-grey without any colour value.

same here.. i dont have that problem either.

HDR in general, i dont even notice anymore. its one of those features that, i dont notice when it happens, but if it was taken away, i would miss it!

I don't experience those problems at all - butI do agree that forests should appeer darker when you first get in.

The sun does indeed blind me to an extend it hurts myeyes when looking at the screen ina dark room. Also, I cannot see enemy or anything else when looking upon the sun.

I don't get those weird light-on, light-off thingy I have seen a video about.

That's your opinion, but I like the HDR. I guess it could be better, but then no other game at the moment really gets it perfect.

HDR in HL2-Lost Coast is much better (as well as Far Cry, SCCT and many others). IMO, HDR in Arma is nothing but scripted brightness/contrast changes. I mean its better than nothing, but yes it is kind of pathetic and ugly.

Thanks to the OP. The new value does indeed fix the colors inside vehicles like the Striker, however, don´t confuse that HDR in Arma is now "true" HDR. wink_o.gif

Interesting wiki page regarding HDR wiki HDR rendering

I don't know, maybe. But (for me at least) everything looks much better. I guess it depends on video card or drivers, cause some people don't even have problems in the vehicles.
