A question about the Soviet-Afghan War

Recommended Posts

I didn't know where else to post this, so I hope it's ok to post it in here.

Listen to this strange stoty,

My father has a friend who served in the SpetsNaz during the afghan war. he told my father that one time his team {8 man} went on patrol and incounterd 5 dudes. there was a fire fight, the 5 dudes were killed and the spetsnaz team had 3 man dead and 2 serious wounded. {1 of the wounded was my fathers friend}. My father's friend {his name is Valera I think} told him that they were S.A.S [special air service} or someother western SF team. wow_o.gif

Could it be ? because I know that USA supplied the afghan rebels with stingers and stuff, and maybe the british were involved too ?  huh.gif

One immediate possibility was that they were only using their uniforms. Afterall, Afghans do have a tendency to use any garb they can find, including American. But British... I don't know. Pretty unlikely I think.

Hold on... I just found this on Wikipedia -

Quote[/b] ]Some troopers (officially former members of the Regiment) fought in the Vietnam War[citation needed] and helped the Mujahideen in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion. There was also official SAS training of Mujahideen in Scotland in the 1980s, with particular emphasis on shooting down Soviet helicopters with American-made Stinger Surface-to-Air-Missiles. Some ex-members have also become mercenaries or private military contractors.

His story seems plausible after that.

I remember watching some documentry on the SAS on the discovery channel a while back and apprently they use to send them out to all sorta places like afganistan etc... to help one side or another, but officely they had left the SAS and arrive in these locations officaly as civilians or what ever. and if there caught or killed the UK goverment would denie all knowlage of them being there and such.

Apprently it happend often, maybe still does.

Jesus,SpetsNaz team had 3 man down and 2 more injured...

how that happened?! because thats just to much casualties for such a high trained personel.

Well if the story is true and they were fighting against SAS or any other Special Forces team then that would make sense.

I'm more shocked at the 5 SAS guys getting killed, I would have thought that at least some of them may have got out. However, isn't 5 a bit of an obscure number for a patrol? Surely it would have been either 4, 6 or 8?

Well, they were outgunned. So I think it might be possible for the Spetsnatz to get them. SAS has far, far better weapons, but again...

Well it sounds like they were ambushed. So it doesn't matter how good you are when your being ambushed. But how well the ambush is executed, and how lucky you are.

The SAS were in Afghanistan during that period. Arming and training the rebels mainly.

And yes a 5 man team doesn't sound very SAS. But who knows?

I also doubt that SAS equipment was better than Spetznatz equipment.

I think the terrain can make a big difference in the outcome. If one side is on a hill with some nice rocks and the other are below on an open field for example. Also I dont think you should get too hung up on the number 5 since the guy didnt say he could bet his life that they were exactly 5 no more no less. Some might have gotten away but he never saw them etc.

Exactly my thought, everything else would be a disgrace for Spetznaz.

Could this not be a perfect case of chinese whispers? No offence to the related people but killing 5 SAS sounds far more impressive than 5 bog standard mujahadeen!

All in all we can never verify this story so lets just add it to the Roswell folder shall we?! wink_o.gif
