German GameStar slaps Armed Assault

Recommended Posts

Hehehe, you guys should take note of the few OFP:E die-hards around here

1. We have/had to face lots of deadhead reviewers around the globe who think/thought nothing of OFP:E

2. We have/had to face numerous PC ofp guys who shit on consoles

But we play OFP:E anyway. Despite so called 'bad' gfx and old console hw. We are used to face hordes of mindless arcade gfx junkies. I don't care (but i would like a backward compatible OFPE on 360 and later ArmA and Game 2 on console;)

So ArmA got a bad review in a german magazine?!? Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Personally I happen to agree with most of her observations.

ArmA is nothing but a beefed up OFP, but since that is what I always wanted it to be I'm happy about it. I don't consider the review to be pseudo-journalism. It's just journalism.

I don't agree with the opinions of the journalist in question, but she has written the article in a way that makes it possible (and simple) to sort her personal opinions (there's a lot of them) from undisputable facts (quite few). She's entitled to her opinion, and I don't share it.

But I believe that a bad review is healthy, once in a while. Critisism serves a purpose, even if it comes from someone who is not as familiar with the OFP game engine as the majority of visitors to this forum.

Let's pretend that all (pre)reviews of ArmA turned out to be a full 10 out of 10. Would that serve any purpose? I would say 'probably not' - because then BIS wouldn't ever change anything. The purpose of a preview is to get attention and feed back. If the feed back points out mistakes, then there's a chance to correct them.

I believe that the disputed article reflects the views of someone who liked OFP in 2002, but never turn into a fanatic OFP-player, pretty well. It's still the same old game with a few improvements. To me, these improvements mean a lot. To others they are purely cosmetics.

If ArmA is going to be a comercial sucess, it has to satisfy causual players as well as hard core gamers. And if ArmA is not a comercial sucess?!? Well, then we can just kiss our favourite game good bye. And we wouldn't want that, right?

I think ARMA and OFP will only be liked by people who really enjoy the kind limitless military simulation as opposed to the story scenrioes that we have seen a million diffrent times. If ARMA is a beefed up version of OFP thats great. OFP is pretty close to perfection in my book and I would be glad if they didnt screw it up. Im sure also you will also if your new to the style of gameplay that you will have to sit down and play it for a while anyways before you liked it. OFP is my favorite game of all time and I think ARMA will not let me down. Hope alot of the addon and mod makers do the carry on the great work they did with OFP to ARMA. notworthy.gif

Ah yes, I remember that review of OFPE that bemoaned, among other things that "It is impossible to make a headshot from 100m while running" and "Your character is quite vunerable; it only takes about three or four hits to kill him". My thoughts were "Three of four shots...thats far too many !" :P Point is that alot of game reviews 'dont get' good games like OFP. PC GAMER has it as their best 'Tactical Shooter', alongside H&D and Raven Shield. I respect them for that thumbs-up.gif

While idealistic communism is a noble cause and all, but I think that I'll support capitalism and purchase my own copy. wink_o.gif

Same here. Better support for current software and nice little things like multiple gunner positions is all i need to buy.

Think of it this way, a lot of people I know are pretty happy with paying $10 a month to play World of Warcraft.

Since I've been playing OFP on and off for 4 years, I think I'm happy enough to pay $60 for an engine upgrade.

So... she's talking about Crysis? To be honest, i haven't seen ONE presentation monitor on E3, on which Crysis ran smoothly. It's so beefed up that even the world-class gaming machines in LA can't handle it. What the hell are you gonna do with such a game?

(P.S. i haven't been to E3, it's just from the videos and interviews)

What also shows the bad quality of her writing: She says that BIS was sleeping for 5 years... hmmmm Resistance shipped in June 2002... calculate wink_o.gif

I guess, she had no clue about BIS' work in the last years....

OFP:RE (June 2002)

Patching OFP to 1.96 (2004)

BIS Australia worked also on Independence Lost (IL)

OFP 4 XBox

VBS 1+2

ArmA

Game 2

so who cares ?

EA must have forgotten to send their money to Gamestar last time, when they gave BF2 Euro Forces 70% and the definite recommendation not to buy it. huh.gif

VBS 1+2

VBS = Bohemia Interactive Australia (BIA), not BIS.

ok, let's say only BI then.

BIA today is a one man show (David). Former VBS Designers (van 't Land and van Paassen) are working on Game 2 now.

Today, most sequels are rejected by their communities because developer was forced to change the gameplay by publisher, or they did it on their own, thinking it would be "cool", and look what happens, R6:Letdown, Commandos: Strike Force, Quake4 (Quake was all about MP, it shouldve remained that way) and many more, and community rejected them (more or less).

FYI I'm glad BIS sticked to the old engine and decided to improve it instead of making it different, and that means all the features from OFP will be there, and there will be more, so it can't be a step back. IMO That woman is in no situation to judge AA, noone is, cept IDEA/BIS, they are the only ones that have any idea what AA will look like and what it looks like at this second. When we get the game, then it will be the time to throw comments around. On another note, she is obviously not aware of VBS1/2, Game2 and number of BIS employees, FFS they ain't EA with unlimited workforce whitch is running on threadmills while making stuff for the game and being whipped on their backs. They throw out a new game every year, because they can.

If by comparing AA to UT07 or Crytek's engine means we'll be having glazed soldiers, view distance of 200m and 3 opponents per battle area, then I say no thank you.

You hit the nail right on the head, Crytek's and OFP's engines are completely different. Crytek's engine is too detailed to handle a map the size of those used in OFP, the reason being that you cannot have both at this point in time. It's a trade off, one or the other. If you want a super detailed map then you won't be able to have a big map. This is the reason why we have never seen such a game. If farcry were to have the same number of models on the screen as OFP it would be a lagfest.

I'm rather biased against game reviews since they are so superficial. I've seen games get good reviews and I think they're crap. Anyway, I bet most of the reviewers don't know shit about programming or the fact that game programmers have limited resources to work with. Game programming is one, if not the, hardest programming jobs out there, along with some other things.
