shinRaiden 0 Posted November 25, 2005 tI'm on the road again this year, and leeching off the neighbors wifi at grandmas (moms mom) condo, while waiting for an email from the boss that will probably never come. Oh well. We had a drive of about ~900 miles, a large stretch of it was over the trucker's bane, The Meachum, with extremely low visiblity ice fog. Despite that, we managed to push through in about 13 hours only. Faster every year. Mom and dad went off to get more grub, then two of my uncles called to say that my grandfather (dad's dad) was in the hospital and had had a stroke that morning, and was recovering. He wasn't released until Wednesday afternoon since they also found some serious heart condition as well during the evaluations. God willing, he'll be 92 next march, and Grandma's not much younger. We visited him at home that night and he's doing much better. He has severe Parkinson's and had a couple bouts with cancer, but still hikes up in the high mountains all the time. The hospital gave him a walker, but he just shoved it out of the way "wha do ah need dis thing fer, ah gets around jus fine. Now let me tell you about the time I took a Russian colonel on a flight over Romania during the war..." After we got back we went and did some shopping. I picked up a new power tie for some marketing bs'ing I got to do soon, and a Canon SD400. In the hall I met some old friends from when I was in Israel almost 6 years ago, who I didn't know lived here. That was cool. I stayed up and watched some CSPAN since there was a cool panel discussion about the future of the US military and irregular warfare. Late that night we wentt o pick up my brother at the airport here. His SOB teachers had run a full schedule of grueling classes up through Wednesday night, then he caught a two hour flight down to join us. Today we went to my cousin's house for Thanksgiving. He got a bit ticked off a few years back at the inlaws of one of my other cousin's - where the dinner was low-carb turkey loaf and exotic salads. True, that is a disgraceful insult to hearty enjoyment. So now was his chance to 'prove' his stuff. First off he dropped a massive turkey into a smoker last night and let it mellow for about 11 hours. It looked like crap, but dang, that was turkey like I've never had before. The garlic potatoes will probably keep away vampires, girlfriends, and the undead for the next 10 years. He even tossed pecans into the candied yam pie and topped it off with fresh pumpkin cheesecake for desert. Next year is a fried turkey, I'll have to talk to him about doing a turducken. His little kid though got their late since he had to go to hospital for eight stitches after body-surfing down the stairs or something. Everyone forgot to call another cousin - the bum / schoolteacher - and finally got a hold of him and he came over. Another uncle showed up late during football since he'd been too busy out flying his airplane to show up on time. Mom was about ready to toss the pie in his face for that stunt. Afterwards we went back to visit Grandma and Grandpa. Grandpa was doing much better, but you wonder every time if it's the last time you'll ever see them. They'd been kinda humbugish the past several christmases, prefering to ship christmas to their grandkids and not do anything themselves, but thime one of my uncles showed up with a tree and started pulling out all the decorations that haven't been used in years. A number of the tree ornaments are even older than my dad. I guess the crisis this week really shook him out of his slacker self. Tomorrow we get up and pull out at o'dark thirty, and head for home. Should be bare and dry, but maybe the ice fog in the usual places. We'll have five drivers going back instead of three down, which should make it easier as well. Dibs on the BLue Mountains, and The Meachum though. Thanks go to the ODOT for their great deicer stuff. 13 more hours in a plane and get home late, then I hop on a plane and fly to the opposite corner of the country for more adventures. I'm a bit po'd that my parents didn't give me the schedule until a week before we left. If they'd told me 2 weeks ago, then I could have changed the reservation to fly out of here instead. Oh well. Thanks for grandmas and grandpas who you might never see again. Thanks for cousins' little kids who stand up in their chairs to do obscene potty dances. Thanks to manaical cousins who insist on one-uping the neighbor's turkey and bigscreen for football. Thanks to the dealership who jumbled the orders so we got a sweet deal on the av system for the van. Thanks to ODOT for the great deicer on The Meachum. Thanks to the drillers bolting in the rockslides at Snoqualamie Pass. Thanks to my aunt who let us stay in her condo while she takes in my sister and roommate on the opposite coast of the country. Thanks to my friends who are having Chicken ala sand far from home and family this thanksgiving. Thanks to my brother for his example and the service work he's doing Down Under. Thanks most of all to the Good Lord who provides for all and makes it all worthwhile.

LtUlrich 0 Posted November 25, 2005 Hello from the parent's house in the upper-income part of town. They own the apartments that I run, which are in... not such a nice part of town. For those of you who don't celebrate Thanksgiving, I highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite holidays. Like Christmas without the greed. I enjoyed reading your post, Shin. This year, I'm thankful for: Bohemia Interactive Studios for their contributions to the human race; Placebo for his unending patience and tact; Earl and Suchey for their Marine Assault Pack; IBM for thier solid line of Thinkpad laptops; Cabernet Sauvignon for its velvety taste and fuzzy feel; The 24-hour Starbucks for always being there; My mom for always finding humor in any situation; Apollo and the rest of {AAF} for accepting me and continuing their interest in OFP; Portland Community College and the administrators of the Pell grant for allowing me to continue my education; My new grandma, stepdad, and uncles for trusting me and providing me with a job and housing; Stephen King for completing the Dark Tower Series; and finally: Myself for continuing to hold on to my moral convictions and socio-political beliefs in a time of national division and angst.
