Uh.. I think those soldier models can be forgiven considering it's a turn based strategy game usually viewed from afar. wink_o.gif

You can download demos for the earlier Combat Missions from their website (battlefront.com)

I realize that turn based wargames aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I have played CM against several other members of this board before and figured there'd be enough interested to make posting worthwhile.

Uh oh, Hellfish caught breaking a rule biggrin_o.gif

Oh well, we're all human?

Anyways, I think this is the game I've been waiting for. Battlefield 2 I was hoping for something where I can at least work somewhat with a team, moving and firing with some idea of cover and maneuver. But instead it's exactly the worst case scenerio. The SAW is useless, and so is most of everything else that isn't 'special'. Especially the bunny hoppers. icon_rolleyes.gif

But this might be it. Moving a platoon through a dense market place, swarming with either insurgents or Syrian regulars. Suddenly, gun fire. Then you have to maneuver, fire, tracks, etc. It's just gonna be perfect. I can imagine the SAW ripping open as the squad runs to cover. Just...awsome.

Why do people keep bringing up battlefield 2? crazy_o.gif This is not a FPS you silly. tounge2.gif

Yeah, I saw it Hellfish. Was greatly amused by some of the trolling in the forums, and found your comments and those of others quite enlightening. CM has been one of my favorite games since the beta for CM:BO; in fact, one of my earliest missions was based on the training scenario outlined in the CMBO mission "Grafenwoehr"; it keeps getting (ever more loosely) reincarnated, and currently it's floating around under the name "Hasty Defense" or something or other.

It is interesting that they would announce CM:SF right this last weekend, and have two screenshots total to show for it. I for one am looking forward to what they come up with; but I do wonder how long we'll be waiting.

One of the problems with doing a statistics-based simulation (which, effectively, is what CM is) of modern warfare, as opposed to WW2, is that the statistics aren't all available.

It should be cool.

Oh wow? Really? What is the Combat Mission series? I thought it was another Tactical First Person shooter! OMG! I DIDN'T KNOWS!

I brought up BF2 because I had high hopes in the team work and scale. Which, of course, were non-existent when I saw the demo. But I bought it anyways for fun.

My imaginative little story of moving a platoon through the market was not in a Bf2 perspective, but this game. Just looking at the details for the soldiers made me think of the details they're going to put in the terrain and urban enviornment.

I know what Combat Mission is. I have all three games.

Those soldier models are like whoa, holy crap high detail for a game that basically simulates huge turn based battles.

But it's turn based, so eh. It looks nice at least.

I'm hoping as the visuals get better, we can actually see individual units taking fire instead of just seeing the little stat bar showing how many of how many units have been killed now.

Because it'd be really silly to see such a nicely detailed soldier running around representing a squad of like five guys and standing in the line of fire and bullets flying through him/ etc.

Still. I'll be definitely looking out for this one.

CM:SF is supposed to model soldiers 1-to-1. Meaning each soldier represents one soldier in the game, no more three men representing a 12-man squad. As I understand it, the soldiers will also engage targets individually as well, but are commanded in teams and squads.

Finally a wargame that isn't based on WW2. Thank god. I was game shopping this weekend and was amazed to see almost every other game on the shelf WW2 themed (or it felt that way). At least the devs had the balls to break the cycle and actual do something different (meaning not a WW2 release for this engine right off the bat) for their first release with the new engine. I can't believe all the crying on those boards about this change in direction either. FFS they'll get their uber WW2 module soon anyway. Until then they have MORE than enough to choose from on store shelves as it is.

Even if it wasn't about the Stryker Brigade in Syria and was just some generic East vs. West conflict but with modern weapons I'd have been just as happy. This is just icing on the cake as I personally find the forces and setting interesting. Also seeing all those grown men cry over the change in setting makes me laugh to no end.

I think the three CM games were really steps towards this. I'm pretty sure that they had a modern theme planned in mind for a long time, just didn't have the engine to break it in with until now.

I'm glad too. There are just so many things that are hard to represent in OFP that I want to do.

Have they mentioned a possible release date ? I browsed their forums but couldn't see anything, it seems a bit weird releasing Alpha screenshots. How much develpment time are we looking at ?

Not a chance in hell they'll make Q1 2006. They haven't even determined their key features. The artwork is practically nonexistent, and they've got thousands of little tiny .wav recordings to do. Plus, they need to design real missions.

I'd say Q1 2007 if they stop slinging mud on the boards and work like fiends. biggrin_o.gif
