Is there wind?

Recommended Posts

I just got a thrustmaster with the twisting stick and sometimes when I try and land in assault II, the heli twists, but only in that area. Could that be WIND?

No, there is no wind in OFP. If the chopper twists, it might be the deadzone calibration for the rudder. It could also be a collision with an object nearby, if you are hovering near the ground, it won't necessarily cause a crash.

Not true.....there actually IS wind in OFP. You can see it in action when placing a campfire, or even better: while using a parachute. Especially on the higher parts of Kolgujev, you'll get blown away for miles at times.

Lay off the beans and eat plenty of fiber

that should cure the wind problem biggrin.gif

There is wind, just try starting a mission and start yourself off as a para guy. The problem is, the wind seems different every time the mission restarts, the wind condition is diferent, so you cant depend on a para laning in a specific location for a mission.

Which is perfectly realistic

Yeah, its good, but it would be good to be able to specify where the wind is going, and at what speed, so you can get a pretty idea of where your troops are going to land if your making a mission.

Nope, that wouldn't be realistic. The wind helps to create this uncertain feeling thing when there's paratrooping missions involved. YOu can't really plan where they're gonna end up. I like it the way it is!

It WOULD be realistic, because the wind wouldnt be different in the same period of time over and over again just because you are loading the mission again.

In real life you don't load missions over and over again.

Thanks for the input all. I gather there is wind, but noone else in choppers seem to be affected. I'll play with it some more. Maybe I just need to re-calibrate the joystick.

yes, it affects the bullets trajectory, or at least seems to.

I had a sniper rifle up on the high hills of south everon sniping at ruskies in the valley below. I would aim straight at them and a little down adjusting for elevation change, and the bullet would hit either way left or way right of the stationary target, even though the crosshairs was straight on him, just a little down.

That is exactly why I said that there was no wind in OFP, because it doesn't affect bullet trajectories -- if you don't hit what you are aiming at, it may well be due to an elevated heart rate from running, for example.

As some people have pointed out, parachutes and smoke are affected by what appears to be wind, so maybe it isn't entirely consistent.

And now, as a public service (and to muddle the waters a little bit), here is an excerpt from a Q&A session with the OFP developers from http://www.operation-flashpoint.net/questions.htm

Q. Can you steer a parachute?

A. No, it’s not a modern chute, it’s a classic spherical parachute. However, your descent is affected by wind.

Q. Will the weather affect aiming, flying, etc.?

A. No...aiming at long distance is hard enough without wind...

Thanks Mr. Frag, for the info. I guess both is correct: there is wind and there isn't (for shooting, but maybe not for flying)!

There is wind simulated in OFP. It affects following things:

- smoke, dust and other "cloudlets" movement

- helicopter and parachute flying

- flag movement

It does not affect anything else, speficically it does not affect bullet trajectory.
