Quote[/b] ]Audi A6 Named World Car of the Year

TORONTO, Canada - February 16, 2005

The Audi A6 sedan emerged from a field of 36 competitors to claim the inaugural World Car of the Year award at a ceremony held here today, during the media preview for the Canadian International Auto Show.

[...]

"The voting was far more than just a popularity contest," Malloy said. Initially, jurors assessed the cars on the basis of 20 separate parameters, ranging from styling and comfort to performance and fuel economy, to develop a short-list of ten finalists.

[...]

The Audi A6 edged out the Volvo S40/V50 and Porsche 911 in a close race for the overall award.

I'm sorry. I just don't understand the voters.

Who wouldn't go for a Porsche in contrast to a stodgy Audi and Volvo? rock.gif

Who particpated? Amish countryfolk? blues.gif

Now, how on earth would you be able to stuff all of your kids into that lovely 911 2+2 Avon tounge_o.gif

Anyway, the cars are judged be relative progress and succses in each cars segment. The Audi is among the most awful and overrated automotive designs I've ever seen. And one should expect the inventors of the "quattro" system was able to build a descent 4wd without integrating that horrible understeering! The Volvo is actually very nice - especially in its V50 estate version. It's also a drivers car! It's is in all respects a good car despite its Ford Mondeo underpinnings. But then - that is the fashion nowadays as for example all the VW brands share the same platform such as Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda.

The Porsche is as ever a safe bet. Good looking, good dynamics and cheaper than a Ferrari - and unlike with a Ferrari you don't always walk around with a fallen off part in your hand. I'd take both thankyou  biggrin_o.gif

Not enough room to install a decent soundsystem. How the hell can one install a 15" in the back? oh wait, is'nt that the engine? under the hood then?  biggrin_o.gif

...somethings just plain wrong with that car  tounge_o.gif

I don't care for these awards.

My car (your average 97-model Seat Cordoba) has 4 wheels, 4 doors, great stereo, good strong dynamo, starts every time and takes me from A to B. Thats all I need. I don't need to pay extra to get an award-winning car.

What about the new mustang?

biggrin_o.gif

We are talking about well built cars!

I saw the UK review of the Mustang, lets just say, don't try to take any corners over 20mph, or assume the interior will still be intact inside of a year.

If you look on the score table you see the parameters:

merit - value - safety/environment - significance - wow

Plus this (from judging):

Quote[/b] ]Forty-eight jury members from around the world have begun the process of driving, and evaluating, the list of eligible vehicles using a standardized 0 - 10 rating scale and a detailed rating form, comprising twenty-three separate evaluation parameters. They include acceleration, braking, vehicle dynamics, safety features, visibility, even cargo and off-road capability, where applicable.

Once vehicles have been evaluated according to the twenty-three standardized parameters, a final ballot will employ a ranking system that considers a combination of merit, value, and market significance.

Me for one. I'd 10x more like to have that Volvo or actually even a Saab than that impersonation of a real car. biggrin_o.gif This is assuming I have to pay for each.

What ever happened to Saab? I think they make some neat stuff even beating Volvo in some regards.

Audi A6 before the volvo, hahaha , wankers.

Seen their new commercials here lately? They are trying to use the fact that not many people here drive Saabs to make them seem like an original and exotic choice.

"Saab, the state of independence"

*chuckle*

"We don't sell many of these....so if you buy one, you'll be cool and original!"

Man come on, the Porsche is just a bitch to drive. It is impossible to handle once it enters a spin and it's butt ass ugly (face it), plus it's not confortable and you can't see anything out of it. It is very over rated, and currently it's kind of a big loser in the racing scene.

Tovarish: commercials have nothing to do with the actual car you buy, that is all handled by the marketing department. biggrin_o.gif

By the way, by going to the website and clicking on Winners, I see totally different results. Volvo in 10th.

Well, my view is ten fold in favor of a F550 or 575 than any Porsche for example, and I'll just be quiet because we are not at a race track where one can campare them and see. biggrin_o.gif

Hi love  biggrin_o.gif

I have to admit the 911 is starting to grow on me lately.....

Between the 993 of the nineties and the 911sc (made untill 1983) as seen in 4in1's post I have to agree that it was dead ugly. But still, the 911s dynamics always comes out on top when a new version was presented to the market. It's simply fantastic, it shouldn't work with an engine in the back - let alone behind the rear axle - but it does! Despite still being a challenging drivers car it has also become quite docile compared to the time before they radically changed and updated the suspension. And even better is the fact that it has become so common and thus kind of "classless" compared to other alternatives. I like it - but I prefer the no-nonsense Caterham Seven!

Oh, and it's still winning races in the FIA GT Championships.
