USA Politics Thread - *No gun debate*

Recommended Posts

I really really really hope this has nothing to do with supreme court..

The mere thought of Ashcroft possibly replacing Rehnquist has just cost me a good night's sleep.   sad_o.gif

It wont happen as there are too many hardcore religious judges out there waiting for a seat in the supreme court. Take that away and you'll take away possible loyalty among the judges as supreme court is the ultimate way of success in a judges career.

Bush was reelected, congress has a republican majority and the supreme court is going to be dominated by "republican judges" .

So, say goodbye to controling powers as sudgested by the founding fathers. Now it's do whatever you wish - or pass laws or ban practices as long as it's done in a reactionary religious way.

Looks like US got it's fair share of mullahs too!

Politics and religion combined is not good at all.

Take abortion for example, which is a religious question too.

After last election Bush wanted to have judges that was against abortion, but that's none of there business.

I'm neither against or for abortion becouse it's not my choice, and they should be thinking the same way.

Good news about Ashcroft. Now we only need the NSA and the SecDef to resign. Followed of course by the VP and finally the president himself. Then we'll have a decent Bush administration biggrin_o.gif

Plus he's the architect and defeneder of the Guantanamo bay camp, behind the blanket arrests of innocent Arabs and muslims in the aftermath of the WTC attacks and a very hard core supporter of the patriot acts.

Not to mention failing to prosecute even a single terrorist.

The worst thing about supreme court appointment would be that there are two ways out of that job, death or retirement. The GA can be fired anytime. ghostface.gif

Quote[/b] ]Or what? You'll whine and post some epitaph filled gripe with smilies sprinkled liberaly through out? I'm quaking in my boots.

Very simple. I'll just report you for flamebaiting by lying about what I say.

Basically I'm sick of people like you not have the intelligence God gave a mite, to be able to 1)back up their accusations with any shred of evidence, as seen with your ignorant "nanny state" comment, and 2) refuse to have the common decency to admit when you are wrong and apologize. But I already knew you lack basic common decency, so now I'm expecting you to prove your accusation, if not then quite simply everyone will know you as a lying moron with no crediability (the quality, capability, or power to elicit belief).

If you want to accuse me of being a socialist (not that there is anything wrong with that!), I expect you to fully back that up with proof and not your standard "What are you gonna do whine?" In the US this could be called libel (written defamation). So I will merely expect justice the Forum way unless you can prove what you say (which you and I both know that you can't...thus your tough 12 year old talk) or to apologize (which I also know you are incapable of).

So you can ignore me if you wish as I know you will, and come back with another attempt to act haughty (scornfully and condescendingly proud) and tough, but your facade (an artificial or deceptive front) will be as transparent (so fine in texture that it can be seen through; sheer) as the slur that you engendered (to bring into existence; give rise to) upon me.

And no need to thank me for the help with the larger words.

Oh and 12 hours.

Now on to people that have the intelligence to prove what they say:

Ashcroft will not be a supreme court justice, as there are even Republicans that don't like him (and called for his resignation initially).

Of course there is always the off-season appointment that Bush can do ot avoid the lengthy confirmation hearings that Ashcroft would never survive. He's done it before after all.

Quote[/b] ]Jesus speaks through the Republicans

I hope the election of George W. Bush is seen as a wake-up call to all the liberal Democrats who oppose God's will.

It is His doing that George W. Bush is still our president. Millions of born-again Christians helped win this election through our prayers and votes. Jesus speaks through the Republicans.

The Democrats will not be able to win elections until they renounce their sinful ways and stop encouraging abortions, gayness, and trying to take away our guns.

Nah I've decided not to ignore you. If it helps inflate your self worth some I guess I could let you know that I only have time right now to reply to one post and I picked yours.

PS.. Shweizer why are you throwing your lot in with Akira? You are so much better than that.

Quote[/b] ]Speculation follows Cabinet resignations

Source: Gonzales is leading candidate to replace Ashcroft

Wednesday, November 10, 2004 Posted: 10:14 AM EST (1514 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House could announce a replacement for outgoing Attorney General John Ashcroft as early as today, a senior administration official told CNN.

Alberto Gonzales, the White House general counsel, is the leading candidate for the post, the source said.

Gonzales, a former Texas Supreme Court justice, was named White House counsel in January 2001. He had also previously served as Texas Secretary of State.

If named and confirmed in the post, Gonzales would be the first Hispanic American to hold the Cabinet position.

Also mentioned as possible nominees are Marc Racicot -- the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign chairman and former Montana governor -- and Larry Thompson, a former deputy attorney general.

The White House announced Tuesday evening that Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Don Evans would be leaving the administration.

Ashcroft's resignation will become effective upon confirmation of a successor, Justice Department officials said. Evans will stay into January, according to The Associated Press.

Ashcroft, a former senator and two-term governor of Missouri, has garnered criticism during his nearly four years as attorney general on issues like the Patriot Act, which backers say helps the government in its fight against terrorism and critics say infringes on civil liberties.

In July, Ashcroft released a progress report and said the Patriot Act "saves lives" and was "al Qaeda's worst nightmare." Portions of the law are set to expire in December 2005.

His confirmation hearing in January 2000 was filled with sharply divided debate. Ashcroft's critics highlighted his longstanding conservative political and religious views -- especially his anti-abortion stance.

Yet those views have also made him a favorite of many on the right, especially religious conservatives.

Eventually the Senate voted 58-42 for his confirmation -- an usually narrow margin for confirming a Cabinet official.

Ashcroft was treated for gallstone pancreatitis in March, and his recovery kept him out of the office for nearly a month. In his handwritten resignation letter, dated November 2, he told Bush the job has been "both rewarding and depleting." (Text of resignation letter)

"I believe that the Department of Justice would be well served by new leadership and fresh inspiration," he said. "I believe that my energies and talents should be directed toward other challenging horizons."

In a statement from the White House, Bush said Ashcroft "has worked tirelessly to help make our country safer" and "served our nation with honor, distinction, and integrity."

"During his four years at the Department of Justice, John has transformed the department to make combating terrorism the top priority, including making sure our law enforcement officials have the tools they need to disrupt and prevent attacks," Bush said.

Bush: Evans a trusted friend and adviser

Evans, who served as Bush's campaign chairman in 2000, is a longtime friend and one of the president's closest advisers. In his resignation, dated Tuesday, he congratulated Bush on last week's election results but said he concluded "with deep regret that it is time for me to return home."

"It is a blessing to have served America with such an extraordinary leader and a true friend," he said. (Text of resignation letter)

In response, Bush called Evans "one of my most trusted friends and advisers" and "a valuable member of my economic team."

"Don has worked to advance economic security and prosperity for all Americans. He has worked steadfastly to make sure America continues to be the best place in the world to do business," the president said.

President Bush met with his Cabinet on Thursday and held a news conference later that day. At that time Bush said he had yet to make any decisions about replacements for any people who resigned.

"I don't know who they'll be," he said. "It's inevitable. There'll be some changes. It happens in every administration."

Bush said Thursday that he was proud of every member of the Cabinet and his staff, and that he understood that they had exhausting jobs and made many family sacrifices.

Earl Balboa

The republican right must spend almost as much time thinking about guys getting it on as actual gay people.

If gay marriage is banned federally they should add an amendment banning Will and Grace, that probably encourages it too.

Mabye he meant gayness in the South Park sense, like "thats totally gay"

I seriously doubt that who ever wrote that believes what he wrote. I think it's a joke. It reads like a democrat wrote it posing as a republican, it uses too any stereotypes. You can never tell for sure any more though. There are lots of loons out there.

Well I know that. We've been living in a police state long before Bush was president, heck long before his dad was president. Still Ericz's sounds much worse than what we got today. I'm sure we'll reach that stage eventually though.

Falwell Plans for 'Evangelical Revolution'

Tue Nov 9,10:43 PM ET   U.S. National - AP

By HANK KURZ Jr., Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va. - Seeking to take advantage of the momentum from an election where moral values proved important to voters, the Rev. Jerry Falwell announced Tuesday he has formed a new coalition to guide an "evangelical revolution."

Falwell, a religious broadcaster based in Lynchburg, Va., said the Faith and Values Coalition will be a "21st century resurrection of the Moral Majority," the organization he founded in 1979.

Falwell said he would serve as the coalition's national chairman for four years.

He added that the new group's mission would be to lobby for anti-abortion conservatives to fill openings on the Supreme Court and lower courts, a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and the election of another "George Bush (news - web sites)-type" conservative in 2008.

"We all, for the first time, began to realize the potential of religious conservatives, particularly evangelicals, when something over 30 million of them went to the polls," he said, noting most supported the president and anti-abortion candidates, and voted to approve 11 initiatives across the country banning gay marriage.

Also, a decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Court allowing gay marriages "helped energize our people," Falwell said.

And when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began performing gay marriages, it "really caught the attention of people of faith in this country, and what we have been saying could happen actually happened," he said.

"The timing could not have been better. That, along with the abortion issues and the terrorism issue, helped us to get our people awakened."

While overseeing the coalition, Falwell said he would leave day-to-day operations of Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church — both of which he founded — to his sons Jerry Jr., 42, and Jonathan, 38.

Mathew Staver, founder of the conservative law group Liberty Counsel in Orlando, Fla., will be the coalition's vice chairman; Jonathan Falwell will be its executive director. Theologian Tim LaHaye will be the board chairman.

In the anarchist sense, sure. In the republic/democratic sense, Bush has taken a giant leap, starting with 9/11. I can only imagine what Bush will do with his percieved mandate. Probably go toward's ericz's vision.
