havocsquad 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Found this at the CBS news web site. I guarantee I would not wanna be this pilot, he heh heh. Quote[/b] ]AP) A National Guard F-16 fighter jet on a nighttime training mission strafed an elementary school with 25 rounds of ammunition, authorities said Thursday. No one was injured. The military is investigating the incident that damaged Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School shortly after 11 p.m. Police were called when a custodian who was the only person in the school at the time heard what sounded like someone running across the roof. Police Chief Mark Siino said officers noticed punctures in the roof. Ceiling tiles had fallen into classrooms, and there were scratch marks in the asphalt outside. The pilot of the single-seat jet was supposed to fire at a target on the ground three and half miles away from school, said Col. Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard. He does not know what happened that led to the school getting shot up. The plane was 7,000 feet in the air when the shots were fired. The gun, an M61-A1 Vulcan cannon, is located in the plane's left wing. It fires 2-inch-long bullets that are made of lead and do not explode, said Webster. "The National Guard takes this situation very seriously," said Lt. Col. Roberta Niedt, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. "The safety of our people and the surrounding communities are our foremost concern." Schools in New Jersey were closed Thursday because of a teachers convention. Webster would not identify the pilot or detail possible disciplinary measures. Mike Dupuis, president of the township's Board of Education, said school workers are mindful that the firing range is nearby. "Being so close to the range, that's always in the back of our minds. It is very scary. I have children in that school and relatives that work there," he said. The range has been used by the military since the end of World War II, long before this area of south Jersey was developed. ©MMIV The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. I bet that idiot either didn't pay attention to his nav systems while daydreaming in that cockpit or someone had the coordinates of the target area screwed up. Strafing targets should be much SMALLER than a bloody school, that should have sent up a flag in his head before he fired. The only useful targets for strafing is light armor/vehicles or a soft target. If I was his squadron commander, I'd personally ship his ass with a boot up it to a desk doing paperwork for mops and auditing stationary.

Baphomet 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Three words encapsulate my thoughts on this perfectly. "Aaammmerrrriiikuhhhh!!! Fuck Yeaahhh!" See this is the kind of stuff they needed to lampoon in Team America.
denoir 0 Posted November 5, 2004 O yea of little faith! Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School is known to be able to  harbor terrorists, including AQ. Intelligence shows that if Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School also has an active WMD program it could arm the terrorists. Not strafing elementary schools is a typical exaple of pre-9/11 thinking!
Jinef 2 Posted November 5, 2004 Hahaha, what a fucking nightmare. All I can say is I told you so. People who have seen my posts from 2002 to 2003 know my opinion of the USAF, especially it's reservist elements. I don't know how they manage to fuck up like this over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Supah 0 Posted November 5, 2004 I wouldn't be to hard on the guy. It can be very easy to get disorientated. I remember when I was in the airforce some dane managed to nail the fire control tower on some range because he was blown ofcourse by cross lateral windage. Ok a school is a more spectacular target but I wouldn't hang him for it. Take it from me, toddlers can be hell! I'd like to know why he was firing his cannon first. Could be there was a target range nearby, could be he didn't want to pay allemoney (how DO you spell that? Â ) Edit: Ah ok firing range nearby, might have been accidental though firing cannon rounds from 7000 feet seems like a rather futile hobby. You are not going to hit shit (well outside of schools) from that altitude.
Tovarish 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Personally I think it may be a very clever recruiting tactic....not only do kids get to experience the cool factor of knowing their school was shot up by an F-16, but now they know that when they grow up, if they join the Air Force they can shoot up their school and pass it off as a training error. The plane returned there after firing the shots, Webster said.
ozanzac 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Is it just me, or are live fire exercises within three miles of a school just a little bit close for comfort, and bordering on the reckless?!

Jinef 2 Posted November 5, 2004 FSPilot, our training mistakes usually lead in the pilot being killed or at least ejecting thus grounded. Either way the pilot is always the one who suffers, not the janitor who has to re tile an entire roof.
Hit_Sqd_Maximus 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Did he fire directly at the school or were they just stray bullets.
Winters 1 Posted November 5, 2004 Is it just me or does anyone else think that building a school less than 3 miles from a live fire range is a bad idea Or maybe they have Oil under the school and this is the first salvo in a new shock and awe campaign designed to "liberate" the oppressed students from their dictator teachers
