theavonlady 2 Posted October 26, 2004 Quote[/b] ]Lawmakers in Food Fight Over Arms BudgetTue Oct 26, 1:28 PM ET TAIPEI (Reuters) - A food fight erupted in Taiwan's parliament on Tuesday as lawmakers quarrelling over a massive arms budget hurled their lunch boxes at each other. "You've got no shame!" screamed Chu Fong-chih of the opposition Nationalist Party, after throwing a take-out box of chicken and rice at Chen Tsung-yi, a legislator from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party who backed the special budget. Chen responded by accusing Chu of sympathizing with Taiwan's arch-foe China, and flung his own lunch box at her. Taiwan's parliament is notorious for fistfights, with many lawmakers enjoying the media attention when scuffles break out. Chairs and shoes have also been known to fly across the chamber on occasion. Legislators were meeting on Tuesday to decide if a proposed $18 billion budget to buy weapons from the United States should be put on the legislative agenda for Friday. newiy 0 Posted October 27, 2004 Argh. I once saw this extremely professional looking lady climb up on the desk in the Taiwan parliament on TV, brandishing her high heeled shoes and taking swipes at the opposition. It made me cringe. It was funny at first, but the frequency at which this kind of thing happens makes it really scary.
ozanzac 0 Posted October 27, 2004 I'm not exactly sure what to think of incidents such as this. Sure, it shows that the politicians are passionate about their politics, but who wants to see such childish behaivour in their parliament?

InqWiper 0 Posted October 27, 2004 When people behave like this it really makes me wonder if they are in the right spot... I would be ambarrased afterwards if I was involved in a foodfight when I was 15. These people are more like 50... Next step is letting football hooligans rule the country. CuteQA 0 Posted October 27, 2004 Those people should be a act and behave as good example to our people. However, the way they acted and they talked made a big negative effect to the society. Example, they were calling each other LP (well, a new word for man n*ts in Taiwan), and thanks for them and the news media(now i feel US did good job for "beeping"), the children learned this quickly. Â Also, they should use their brain more because people didnt vote them to make Taiwan became a international joke. It is shame I saw some their old fighting video footage had been used on PS2 advertisement in USA. Â " Sorry for forgoting remove the reply pic " @@
Friedchiken 0 Posted October 27, 2004 Having parents from Taiwan, I would just like to add that Taiwan's political system is extremely broken. If anyone though the US elections were bad, this place is worse. Most of the politicians out there stand for nothing, not even little things like gay marriage (like that's a national crisis ). It's also part of the education system over there. Taiwan's children have no sense of independence and responsibilty due to protective parents and the dangers of the streets. They also memorize everything by rote and never develope the thinking skills emphasized by the American school systems. I admit that you can't understand a nation without living in it but asian countries can seem chaotic and aimless sometimes to me. Hopefully I'm not making a serious generalization about the people there. Sorry in advance anyways
