The biggest reason why using headphones is considered bad for your ears is because accidents do happen with them...

It happens more than you'd think that someone puts on his headphones while he/she doesn't realize that the sound is way too loud.  When the person turns on the music all of the sudden there's a lot of sound resulting in a 'sudden explosion of noice' => VERY bad for your ears, it can make you deaf if you are very unlucky.  It often seriously damages your ears so you won't hear well after it happened.  This is for the rest of your life, the little "hairs" in your ears get destroyed and they can not be fixed ever again...

A Belgian artist was unlucky enough to have such an accident, he can still hear but he doesn't hear good at all...

This is very serious, you can become almost deaf or even deaf because of such a "stupid" error...

And yeah of course, loud music through headphones is bad too because the sound goes directly into your ears.  

If you don't put the sound loud, headphones aren't that bad at all.

Whatever you do, make sure that the sound is as low as possible when you start (to avoid that 'sudden explosion of sound') and always make sure that you don't put your music too loud.

If you do that, it won't do any real damage...

There's also the chance of not hearing anything and then a 5 ton truck hits the side of your house. A valid chance, but highly unlikely if you're safe and you don't crank your sound up.

Anything can be dangerous if you use it the right/wrong way. Headphones are not dangerous. Ive had mine for over 1 year and I had perfect hearing the last time I checked (less than half a year ago).

because your eyes also don't go down everytime you get soap in it  

and for calling OFP a stupid game... well... you're in trouble...  

anyhow, what makes you so afraid you'll lose your hearing? if you use as little volume as possible your ears will adapt, then you can go some lower again , get used to it, go a little lower again...

i say get a biology book , ask a teacher, sounds become "dangerous" from around 90 Decibel , where most headphones don't reach 80 , and you play OFP with 30 / 40 (most of the time   )
