BoweryBaker 0 Posted July 4, 2004 In your country what is status based off of? Beauty? Wealth? Military power? Chosen elect? Popularity? What? It's like, all of those things bring people much status in life in the United States. I'm talking international status.

quicksand 0 Posted July 4, 2004 Well I am grateful of what I have in my country(ROMANIA).There is always room for better(still some coruption in the government that has to be eliminated and the "living level" raised) but everyone should think of the third world countries before complaining.Human beings just like you with the same potential that have to live with a quarter of bread per day in a continuos struggle for survival. Sure money always helps so does knowing somebody(we are still far far away from a utopic society) Â but it puts a smile on my face to know that you can start from rock bottom and go straight to the top if you got the necesary amount of ambition coupled with a stroke of luck. Guest Ti0n3r Posted July 4, 2004 in sweden its about military power. if you aint got your own 5000 men militia, then you're a nobody
Ex-RoNiN 0 Posted July 4, 2004 I suppose we can let this one slide as "humanities research" or "sociology research", which makes it scientific. In Greece, its kinda hard to pin down, it depends on what people you want to be judged by. Depending on who you want to be judged by, it can be anything from getting an education, the kind of job you have, what you earn, where you live, what your kids are like, to what your going-out places are. Its easier for women - the amount (and quality) of men she slept with, and her attire
the_shadow 0 Posted July 4, 2004 in sweden its about military power. if you aint got your own 5000 men militia, then you're a nobody  i wish that was true :P here it´s mostley about money (and how well known you are among ppl) so the best way to achive status in sweden is to be in a soap opera (we got tons of em) and just be as stupid and careless about other ppl as possible (tho speak clearly, to be on nation television, be a blond female with huge boobs, have sex with as many guys as possible in front of camera, and beside that, behave like a asshole) that´s the easiest way of achiving status... OR you win a huge amount of money...
cozza 24 Posted July 4, 2004 I achieved status. I'm the biggest bogan from Denver, Kynton, Tremthan and Dayleford. You ask anyone in those area and they say Sam Corris. Is the Biggist Asshole ever.

denoir 0 Posted July 4, 2004 No, I think he's right. That's how you get your picture in the Aftonbladet or Expressen tabloids. "Robinson-iNeo: Därför vek jag ut mig" "Big-Brother the_shadow i stort kändisbrĺk!" etc Which represents a broad lower middle-class segment of the society. And it's quite pathetic. In other demographic groups there are other priorities, often equally pathetic. For instance for the younger social 'elite' in Stockholm (the spybar crowd) it's about how close you are to the royal family. Sweden is a bit perverted in the notion that you are almost expected to be ashamed if you are rich or if you have a good education. (Socialism gone too far)

walker 0 Posted July 4, 2004 Hi all Here in the UK. Whether you have made any TV apearences. Whether the newspapers think your worth talking about. Activities in major Social field the Arts, Science, raising money for charity etc. Activites to rehabilitate oneself after a crime or social misdemeanor. Headlineing or better stealing the show at Glastonbury. Winning a major Sporting trophy for a national team (England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland, Great Britain, United Kingdom, we even include southern Ireland which is very bizzar as they are not part of the UK) Having a title. Being a politician (only efective for the time you are in office) Having lots of Money. The most important are the first two and they broadly cover celebrity which you can get by just being stuck in some house for a month. xawery 0 Posted July 4, 2004 Before we go on, I think it would be wise to define status. I think it is being confused with fame/popularity. Let's see what the Oxford Dictionary says: Stâ'tus n. 1. Social position, rank, relation to others, relative importance, superior social etc. position. Relativity is an inherent element of status, and as Ex-Ronin mentioned, it all depends on who your 'target audience' is. So, if you are trying to achieve a high status among the lower/middle class, appearing in tabloids, tv etc. might be a requirement. If on the other hand you are trying to gain a high stature amongst the intelligentia, your academic output or what have you could be the criterion. A gross generalisation, I know, but I just want to illustrate the relativity of the whole concept of status. To continue this discussion, we should try to establish which definition of status we are using. Are we discussing status amongst the minority that matters (i.e. the influential elite, academia, politicians, businessmen), or the less influential majority? regards, Xawery

BoweryBaker 0 Posted July 4, 2004 Social status is how important, or high ranking you are according to the definition that was posted earlier. I believe social importance came up in the definition. In other words, what makes you more important to the community you are a part of as a whole. I know one thing, status in the ofp community is really based on quality or standards of your work. In gamespy status is based on how well you are in missions or how well your team is at ctf, and also how good your missions are if you create them. It's a whole different world from one another. IceFire 0 Posted July 4, 2004 In the U.S. large scale status is primarily based on looks, then money. Cmon, think about Tom Cruise and Bill Gates. With younger folks, it's more about looks and who is cool. In most social circles, status is based on ideology and personality(this last one is existant only in middle/upper class and conservative circles and completely ignores the large inner cities and its inhabitants).
