I used some ancient program to get more base memory (max 640KB, can't remember the real name of this memory).

Probably Quarterdeck's QEMM386

I don't use any mem-managers for my dos-computer. Just load the drivers into specified mem-adresses and get around 600KB conventional RAM free after all devices has loaded for XMS and around 575 when using EMS.

AMD Athlon 2600+ XP

512 mb 400 mhz DDR

Radeon 9600 PRO 256 mb

KuDoz 7X/600-6A motherboard

three HDs, adding up to 100 gb

an ancient HP 8100i CDR-W

MS Sidewinder FF2

Logitech Wingman Precision (for FIFA 2004)

Nokia 447Zi Plus 17"

Palm i705

When I started my computer this morning, I got an error message saying that my second slave hd had failed ... luckily the problem was resolved by simply booting the computer again. Should I start taking backups of the hd or could this just be a minor glitch that can be ignored?

Also, do not buy Logitech Wingman Precision. It sucks, badly. Not enough buttons etc. Could anybody recommend me some other pad? I'd prefer something similar to a PS2 pad.

Might just as well be the ide-controller or a loose ide-cable.

I would back up everything nomatter what. If the disk is old you might want to look for a replacement.

What brand is it?

Maxtor, Quantum and Fujitsu are sucky-sucky.

Good (and reliable) brands are Western, Seagate and IBM (now Hitachi).

Buy a PS2 tounge_o.gif

Seriously, what's better than mouse-keyboard for that type?

No, you can not say that. Every brand has goot and bad lines, just look at IBM's drives of last year crazy_o.gif

The safest bet is to go with a drive that has a 3yr guarantee from the manufacturer, as this will mean that the manufacturers have great faith in those drives smile_o.gif

Btw: I've had Maxtors for almost 8 yrs prior to this PC, not one failed tounge_o.gif

There will always be exceptions.

I had a bad Ultrastar 18LZX once.

When reliability is the most important (servers) you don't see alot of Maxtor, Quantum and Fujitu....

Allmost always Seagate, WD and IBM.

I'm just stating the facts smile_o.gif

About the warranty: can't beat IBM's 5 year ;)

@Ex-Ronin: IBM had one faulty line: the GXP85 IIRC. They recalled the batch. Any manufacturer can have a faulty batch. It does not reflect the quality of the brand's products unless it happends all the time.
