shadow 6 Posted January 11, 2004 I used some ancient program to get more base memory (max 640KB, can't remember the real name of this memory). Probably Quarterdeck's QEMM386 I don't use any mem-managers for my dos-computer. Just load the drivers into specified mem-adresses and get around 600KB conventional RAM free after all devices has loaded for XMS and around 575 when using EMS. Should I start taking backups of the hd or could this just be a minor glitch that can be ignored? Also, do not buy Logitech Wingman Precision. It sucks, badly. Not enough buttons etc. Could anybody recommend me some other pad? I'd prefer something similar to a PS2 pad.

Should I start taking backups of the hd or could this just be a minor glitch that can be ignored? Might just as well be the ide-controller or a loose ide-cable. I would back up everything nomatter what. If the disk is old you might want to look for a replacement. What brand is it? Maxtor, Quantum and Fujitsu are sucky-sucky. Good (and reliable) brands are Western, Seagate and IBM (now Hitachi). Quote[/b] ]Could anybody recommend me some other pad? I'd prefer something similar to a PS2 pad. Ex-RoNiN 0 Posted January 11, 2004 Maxtor, Quantum and Fujitsu are sucky-sucky.Good (and reliable) brands are Western, Seagate and IBM (now Hitachi). No, you can not say that. Every brand has goot and bad lines, just look at IBM's drives of last year The safest bet is to go with a drive that has a 3yr guarantee from the manufacturer, as this will mean that the manufacturers have great faith in those drives Btw: I've had Maxtors for almost 8 yrs prior to this PC, not one failed

shadow 6 Posted January 11, 2004 There will always be exceptions. I had a bad Ultrastar 18LZX once. When reliability is the most important (servers) you don't see alot of Maxtor, Quantum and Fujitu.... Allmost always Seagate, WD and IBM. I'm just stating the facts About the warranty: can't beat IBM's 5 year ;) @Ex-Ronin: IBM had one faulty line: the GXP85 IIRC. They recalled the batch. Any manufacturer can have a faulty batch. It does not reflect the quality of the brand's products unless it happends all the time.
