Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted February 12, 2007 Hi all, I am following this thread now since quite a while and it is one of the few threads that makes me come back to this forum. I even decided to buy the Nikon D40 in order to start contributing. However, please give us beginners a chance to catch up. My suggestion is the following: Edit the first post of this thread and add the cameras people are using. Also, when you take a photo, let us know what ISO (and other settings) you were using. What do you think?

My suggestion is the following: Edit the first post of this thread and add the cameras people are using. Also, when you take a photo, let us know what ISO (and other settings) you were using. What do you think? Hi Albert and welcome to "the club", though there really isnt any I don't mind adding the info if you want to know Also feel free to ask questions here or in PM. I don't know much about Nikon's as I am a Canon user myself but guys like goob and Killagee can probably answer any questions you have about camera specific things. Hey guys, I've wanting a DSLR for a long time, and today I came across this: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog....&catid= been researching it for a little while, and it seems like a very sweet camera for the price. -Comparable to the Nikkon D50 -Can use AA batteries -Uses SD memory cards, which I have -No image stabilizer, but I have a tripod. -Wide variety of lenses. Just wanting some knowledgeable advice, should I go for it? I don't know about Pentax, I know they made good film camera's. One problem I foresee though is that you are investing in a platform that might have very little growth potential. The advantage with either Canon or Nikon is that accesories like lenses you buy for use with an entry model will also still be of use with a higher end camera of the same brand. If pentax makes more advanced camera's and the quality is good then go for it but I'd take the growth issue in mind
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted February 12, 2007 there is basically an easy choice to take. I either get the (better) Cannon 400 and pay a 100 Euro more, but then safe some bucks on lenses, or I buy the good Nikon D40, which unfortunately only works with AF lenses. But since I am not intending to buy any additional lenses for now this if fine. besides, everyone has Canon! But I am a beginner so I dont want to start with a material overkill. I will try the Nikon and in two years time I will see whether I upgrade. Anyhow you are right, it is probably better to simply ask questions via PM rather than turning this thread into a bureaucratic monster.
the_shadow 0 Posted February 12, 2007 does the D40 only support AF lenses? that was odd... the "older" and imho better D50 supports both MF and AF lenses... i have a D50 and i can say that i dont regret that i bought it.... imo the canon cameras fel very "plastic" and dont have as good grip as the Nikon does... the Nikon is a little heavier, bigger and feels more rugged then the Canon... (i compared the two brands very closely before i bought my D50).. i also felt a bit on a Pentax, a Sony and a Minolta, and thay felt like crap, especially the Minolta... but i guess thats individual... Canon has probably a wider range of "factory" lenses then Nikon does, but there are many brands that make lenses with Nikon fitting (though they also have the same lenses with Canon fitting ofcourse).... but however you do there is a shitload of different lenses in all price levels... and remember, the camera body is the cheap part, the lenese is what costs money.... Supah 0 Posted February 12, 2007 *hits shadow with his magnesium bodied 20D* Â One problem with Canon is that the lenses can be hard to get as demand always outstrips supply for some reason. Lot's of companies make lenses for these camera's. Companies like Sigma makes lenses for them both for instance. Sole and Deadmeat both have a Sigma 70something-300 on their camera's and they seem pretty chuffed with it I have had some bad experiences with Sigma lenses, on had VERY poor focus at the extremes of its range and seeing as I do a lot of aviation photography I need a long focal length lens. Then I bought the 100-400 L IS USM from canon which is a world of difference! I am never buying a non canon lens again.
the_shadow 0 Posted February 12, 2007 *hits supa with a steel bodied D50 with a Sigma 70-300 lens* yeah, i agree that the sigma lens seams to have a bit poor autofocus at max zoom, however i have not had time to test it for real yet... right now im just trying to figure out what lense i should buy to replace the kit lense :P edit: atleast i think it´s steel, might be aluminum.... and a little plastic.... anyway, it´s hard and heavy
sniperuk02 0 Posted February 12, 2007 I have a Fujifilm s9600, it comes with a built in 28-300mm lens, which saves me changing lenses all the time. Personally I think the images are clearer and sharper than my dads eos350D with the sigma 70-300mm lens. It feels alot more sturdy aswell, and its easier to hold still. My only problem with it is the fact it cant do really long exposures. But other than that it does everything the 350 does for cheaper. I will be buying a DSLR at some point, but for now this is a great camera, I'm not to sure on how its going to be at aviation pictures.
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted February 12, 2007 does the D40 only support AF lenses? yes, unfortunately thats the case for anybody else is thinking about buying a new camera, please have a look at http://www.dpreview.com/ it is very detailed and helpful for the rest of you who likes to take photos during adventure tours have a look at this. I read about it in a magazine (in one of the four thousand I bought to get a good market overview). It is a latex cover which is/will be available for the most common models. Camera Armour you can buy it at amazon for example http://www.amazon.com/s....20Armor

If pentax makes more advanced camera's and the quality is good then go for it but I'd take the growth issue in mind I went for it. Kept track of the stock online and saw that they were selling like hotcakes, so I stopped by the store before work today, and then I noticed they had an "open box" unit with a discount on top of the sale price... ...So in the end I got a $699 camera for $499 (CAN). As far as growth potential, I've read a few reviews that mention the camera is backwards compatible with just about anything Pentax has put out in the last 40 years as far as lenses, and these can be picked up dirt cheap at many pawnshops. Not sure about higher end cameras, but I'm at least assured a good selection of lenses. Gonna go mess around with it now .
