Which shooting games have set the standard?

Recommended Posts

Which shooting games do you think have raised the bar and why do you pick them specifically? Are there any future shooters coming out that you think will raise the bar even higher?

Is this now or historically?

For FPS in general I'd say Doom but more recently OFP of course. In the future HL2?, Doom3? OFP2 of course smile_o.gif.

Delta Force 1 and 2 were the trend-setters in military FPS's, attempting to offer semi-realism, large terrains and serious MP possibilities.

OFP mopped the floor with them and everything similar that's come out since.

OFP is certainly the best military game but the MP interface is not as blatantly simple as many UBI and novalogic games. this is nit picking but ghost recon does a better job of special operations missions no metal gear solid esque missions and the AI is more fun to play against they use cover and shoot innacurately and there is suppressing fire used in GR. on the other hand OFP has massive combined arms engagements which GR does not reproduce at all neither does GR have the atmosphere. yes it is nerve racking at times but its not atmosphere like hearing the radio crackling "tanks inbound" then watching a platoon of tanks come over the hill and think OH S**T!!. frankly OFP has the best moments of any game i have.

Half Life upped AI... flashpoint was one of the first combat where linear gameplay had been replaced with some freedom

Games like :

Hidden and dangerous 1

Rainbow six

Spec ops

also deserves to be mentioned in my opinion .

Small squad tactical shooters .

( Waiting for " UZI " to appear and mention " Seal Team " tounge_o.gif )

Half-Life upped AI and it forced developers to think about the story and depth in first person shooters too.

Not to be too much of a jerk by putting a twist on things, but IL-2 is an awesome shooting game. Quite realistic, although they fnebbed IL2FB with the latest patch. Oh well.

But yes, as far as FPS' are concerned, OFP ranks highly.

Talking at least in the same genre (not solely as fps) I would have to agree completely with Avon, DF1 & DF2 then Opf smile_o.gif

Actually INFILTRATION (mod for UT) was one of the most realistic shooters before OFP(first one to use iron sights for instance). It didn't have all the cheaters of DF either. That mod actually started development before CS.

I know many INF players went on to OFP.

DF probably had the worst single player AI I have ever seen btw.

The original castle Wolfenstein of course smile_o.gif

Doom was the next big step and finally Quake which introduced the first real 3d. smile_o.gif

Hidden and Dangerous. The ironsights in the Original version (before they removed them in devil's bridge crazy_o.gif ) were the best I've ever seen. It was a very difficult game, with incredible atmosphere. And of course, Operation Flashpoint was the only game that could fill the void that Hidden and Dangerous left.

i agree with denoir that retrun to castle Wolfenstein 3d did leave a mark, as did Doom series. however, that legacy is propagating enough brainless noobs who thinks they can run around shoot with accuracy.

R6 series were something that deserves recognition.

But OFP set a new standard because

1. area size

2. balance of realism that is yet to be overcome(ballistics, engagements)

3. AIs that are not bound by area or pre-determined actions.

Doom and Wolf3d had entirelly different goals than OFP. Their main goal was fun gameplay and easy to learn/enjoy. They definatelly succeded there. Plus, Doom raised the bar extremelly high compared to what existed before. Doom2 probably did more for increase in number of Internet accounts than even porn did smile_o.gif. Not to mention influencing dramatic increase in gpu developments.

My history in this kind of game is simple

in this order

-1st Hunter for Atari 520ST (the father of those games for me) then nothing more in that kind of game for some years

-2nd Delta Force (awesome huge scale game, i even started a squad with some friends for it)

-3rd Delta Force 2 (good game, but at its time , i had not a good enough system to play it smoothly)

-4th Delta Force : Land Warrior (despite it was very smooth , it highly disapointed me as it was even more arcade-ish than DF1&2 , never bought any DF game after that)

-5th Ghost Recon and its expansions Desert Siege Island Thunder : great games very interesting SP missions, despite i was not fan of the R6-like reticle

-6th Operation Flashpoint : for me, the new standard of this kind of game , it will be difficult to be better.

In the mod category , i agree that Infiltration is one of the best thing that was created on unreal engine.

I heard that the last version of this mod will be out very soon (after +/- 2 years of development)

I have a hard time seeing what games like AOE, Lords of the Realm and Ultima has to do with shooters.

Might as well mention the one and only....

1977 - Pong.

Answer:

Which shooting games do you think have raised the bar...

MoH:AA follows the Half-Life heritage in that it is a "story-line fps", but other than that... If we were to discuss "enjoyable games based on a Hollywood-induced hype", the MoH franchise would fit in fine.  tounge_o.gif

MGS, on the other hand, I haven't played, so I'll take your word for it.

My take on games that brought fresh blood to the genre: Deus Ex and Max Payne (FPS Noir, so to speak). Add Mafia to the list.

In the near future? We'll have to see...

And for a slight thread derailing, my nominations for "other genres" are:<ul>

[*] Jet sims: Falcon 4 (eventually, that is). The standard.

[*] Prop sims: IL-2. Without a doubt. Then UBI-soft politics got to them... sad_o.gif (Witness the destruction of the RS6 franchise in RvS)

[*] War games: Allied Assault: Red Devils over Arnhem. Be gone, foul hexes!

There was an old Amiga game years back that had you travelling by foot or various vehicles, was it Midwinter?

Edit: Yup it was, awesome game, 13 years old smile_o.gif

http://www.classicgaming.com/amigareviews/midwint1.htm

Hmmm this sounds a bit familiar.......

Quote[/b] ]The idea of having a massive, mysterious landscape to explore in glorious 3-D, together with a very strong strategic challenge, is a wonderful idea that Mike Singleton has executed perfectly. Travelling across the icy wastes is an enchanting experience in itself, without having to tackle buggies and aircraft, or worry about the main objective. The polygons work perfectly with zero perspective or update problems. The graphic effect of skiing up the side of a high hill and pausing to look out over the landscape, viewing distant hills and villages just has to be experienced to be believed. The most atmospheric, utterly magnificent game I've played (and will play) all year.
