miles teg 1 Posted January 27, 2004 Hi there... Now, I'm just wondering/ asking gently:Aproxomatly how long will it be untill the GREAT island is finished. Because I'm concidering on installing ofp back on my machine and start on a ww2 campain and if it's like half a year unttill it's done then maby I will use a nother island... Just wondering.. Fred, this island works just fine for single player missions. Also there are MORE then enough WWII addons out now to make tons of WWII missions. I believe a more important question to ask is exactly how many good WWII missions are out there. That's probably the real problem. But if you don't mind learning to make your own missions in the map editor you can have tons of fun making your own WWII missions with current WWII addons. deathsai 0 Posted January 27, 2004 I'm still waiting for a realistic Omaha beach. The whole coastline on this map looks like Utah beach. There are no long, flat areas of beaches, and there are no bluffs that realisitcally simulate Omaha beach. well, maybe we will have the power to create a beach that actually looks like Omaha someday... mr burns 132 Posted January 27, 2004 imho you should drop that omaha beach stuff....though it would be easily possibile to be recreated by some dedicated islandmakers- the gaming experience would never be worth all the work. just imagine your (and every other squad) being mowed down by MG-42 because they hold their formations instead of searching for cover or giving covering fire other than that i can imagine that the inland of JC´s island fits perfect to ofp. the bocage is really well done and with some extra foliage (i-44 grass beta) it looks a whole lot better. looking forward to play some good missions on that island
MEDICUS 0 Posted January 27, 2004 First of all, i have to say that this is probably the greatest Island i've ever seen in OFP! I nearly can't wait until it's finished ! I loved the "Alpha1" ... the "Beta1" was even better ... and now this screens .... WOW! But i've 1 problem ... i'm normaly using "Fatwombats" high-textures and Normandy don't work with that one If i use them ... i'm missing all textures on the island ... that looks really wierd Would be nice, if you (JC) could manage to get this thing running with the "high-textures" ... cause i don't want to miss them anymore. They looks 100% better than the original one. Here are the DL-Links for FatWombats-HighTextures: Everon: New Everon Malden: New Malden Kolgujev: New Kolgujev THX and keep on this excellent and great work!!! =) MEDICUS
deathsai 0 Posted January 27, 2004 Well, it may be impractical to use as an actual gameplay experience, (but why not just use scripts to force the AI to charge?) but it would look good in an OFP movie. I just hate seeing 20 feet of beach and from the moment your Higgins hits the sand you are able to throw grenades at the MG42s. It totally ruins any chance of being able to simulate the carnage at Omaha beach. And who says watching a platoon of men getting mowed down by MG42s as they heroically charge them isn't fun? Cpt. FrostBite 0 Posted January 28, 2004 imho you should drop that omaha beach stuff....though it would be easily possibile to be recreated by some dedicated islandmakers- the gaming experience would never be worth all the work. just imagine your (and every other squad) being mowed down by MG-42 because they hold their formations instead of searching for cover or giving covering fire  other than that i can imagine that the inland of JC´s island fits perfect to ofp. the bocage is really well done and with some extra foliage (i-44 grass beta) it looks a whole lot better. looking forward to play some good missions on that island  I already made a few test missions with a beach filled with hedgehogs (or whatever those thind are called), bunkers and a couple (8) mg42's. A few motars to spoil the fun for my squad and there you go; a nice killing field. It's hard, but not impossible to get to other end of the beach and defeat the germans. But I think an invasion is not the purpose of this island. It's main goal is to simulate the normandie ground war in the open terrain. It does that perfectly. gaultesian 0 Posted January 28, 2004 Frostbite is right. I have developed several missions using the interior. This is an excellent map to represent the difficulties both the Allies and the Germans had in conquering/defending Normandy. Just try and get your squad through a field that is defended by a couple of mg42 nest and a Pak36 field gun - you won't be dissappointed!. Try and recreate the mission from the "Band of Brothers" episode 2 where they are trying to secure a machinegun nest/artillery battery on the outskirts of just such a field (with the high hedges and low grass area). Also, try some WWII tank engagements on this map - playing the Allies is good, but frustrating (those MKIV's were killers against the Shermans and the Chruchills!), and playing the Germans is target-rich, but difficult to stem the tide. Excellent work - I only wish that JC was creating this island in a 25.6*25.6 map size instead. I also agree with a previous comment about the amount of WWII addons out there - between AIA, WWIIEC and a plethora of independent addon makers like JC and John the 'tank maker', we have more than enough men, weapons, planes, etc. I like the beach landing stuff, but too many people concentrate on this stuff too much - it is time we got away from the beaches and started doing battles inland. Sincerely, Gaultesian p.s. Did I mention the Eastern Front - now that's another excellent warzone!....
igor drukov 0 Posted January 28, 2004 May I suggest you guys try my mission... Â For feedback, you can go here (there's also a thread in the user missions forum on page 4...) Anyway, Normandie is indeed a beautiful island, with lots of potentialities. At least, it's the only one that tries to reproduce what a bocage really looks like (though there remain a few things to do). But living in Normandy IRL, I wish Jean-Christophe didn't try to reproduce the area's "big" cities (such as Caen, Argentan, Flers), but rather one of its uncountable villages with names that sound like poems... (J-C, ask me anything you want about Normandie's history or geography, I'll be glad to help !) The island would gain in realism (recreating WW2 Caen in OFP is as feasible as recreating Stalingrad). Still, I can't wait for the final version, with all the new houses and fields and bocages... * The lonely WW2 Normandie freak scurries back into his foxhole after bowing his way out *
benu 1 Posted January 28, 2004 It would be really great if the final version would not use any of the cwc textures anymore so it does not interfere with mods like the hi-textured islands. But great island all in all.
Baron von Beer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 I agree WRT name. Would be nice to see it on a more "real" scale. Have the small villages, etc. Suppose it add's to the flavor for those not all that familiar with the locale, as they may have heard of Caen, but not Colleville-sur-Mer, or Lion-sur-Mer. All in all though, I do love the map. Nothing like taking a jeep for a spin through the bocage country. Driving slowly, breathing the fresh air, getting ambushed by an MG42 crew who so kindly fill your body with lead.
Apollo 0 Posted January 28, 2004 Quote[/b] ] (J-C, ask me anything you want about Normandie's history or geography, I'll be glad to help !) If i recal correctly i remeber J.C once said he actually lives in that region. (he's french afterall) And it has always been his intention to make the island as realistic and correct as possible. deathsai 0 Posted February 5, 2004 Your flak download doesn't work for the Pathfinders mission. I still wish that someone could actually make the area of Omaha beach as difficult as it was IRL...Climbing the bluff, etc. It is impossible to make a decent beach landing on just about any map, as the beaches are far too small and few if any have well sized bluffs (if any at that!) Although the town battles can be fun, the AI simply can't use buildings and cover, and that really takes away alot. Not to mention that it would rather run 10 ft behind you and then turn and shoot at you. Same with the open field battles, although since hedgerows weren't put in we can't exactly experience the most difficult terrain in the days after June 6. freddern 0 Posted February 22, 2004 Ey, have ya'll seen the new screenies of the island on the WW2 page? But i'm a little confused. MEDICUS 0 Posted March 4, 2004 Anything new about the status of progress? In the last few weeks, there have been some addons released by JC ... but nothing new about this alsome island Does anybodey know if the next release-version will be playable with "Fatwombats" High-Textures? The Alpha and Beta1 weren't. Only white textures. Mfg MEDICUS
