Upgrading time... again

Recommended Posts

errr in the cpu business I think intel is the only king.... yes they are expensive but if u want quality and speed, u want intel. Amd is just there to keep intel from slacking off....

this suks, at least if a different fully dx9 game came out we could make better choices. Why trust ppl who are driven by money (that is valid both for nvidia, valve or ati)

Well, I can only recommend ATI if you are going for a DirectX 9 card now. I've had a GF2Ti, and am now using a GF4200 - and I'm a very satisfied customer. Still, the FX-series of Nvidia cards is flawed. I hope NVidia will improve their design for their next generation of GFX cards, but until then I can only recommend ATI.

ATI doesn't need a specialized render path to perform well with DirectX 9.0 - they just follow the specifications, whereas Nvidia needs a specific optimization for each game (either provided by the game producer or a new driver version). Also FSAA for NVidia cards is less effective and leads to a much higher performance loss than with ATI cards. There's enough impartial hardware tests showing these differences and the inferior performance of the FX series, so don't blame it on Valve's bad intentions.

I used to be a nVidia fan, but brought a 9700 cause it was cheap and powerful, the visual quality makes my old Ti500 look like mip~map legoland!, the 9700 will run any game out at highest mipmap level with no decernable 'line' between gradiants, most will run with high framerate with 16x anisotropic filtering as well!...

When ATi was still adolescent, and fumbling with poor drivers I could understand being an nVidia zealot (I was one!) because they constantly delivered a superior product(in pure speed/power, visual quality has always been ATi's domain), but now it's a diffent game alltogether, people who are still blindly praising nVidia really need to look into the matter. You don't buy PC componants by brand name only!, they are'nt that constant a quality!. You have to research each and every item before buying, they are'nt like cars, motorcycles or even most other electrical item manufacturers. They are just to volitile. To likely to be a flop or the next best thing. You can't gaurentee their quality performance because they cover unknown ground each release, in such huge leaps!...

At the present time, IMO, the best rig is a 2500Barton, AbitNF7S (rev 2.0), radion9700 upwards (depending on £$% available) and 512MB of 3500Twinmoss DDR to run the rig at 400MHZ~DDR/FSB...

Intel has'nt a performance increase to qualify the price increase over AMD. nVidia delivered a pi$$poor product(price, power and quality) with the FX (I was as disapointed as any other nVidiot out there sad_o.gif , but I'm not going to flog a dead horse just because it's named nvidia!) when compared to the 9700, let alone the 9800's. Being a mindless fan of manufacturers is the dumbest thing you can do IMO, you should judge them on their product NOW, each product. Not past products, past products only prove they can make good stuff, not that they will!...

I don't mean any of the above to be inflamatory!, it's just my opinion, not an attack on anyone elses reasoning wink_o.gif ...

Peace out! smile_o.gif ...

Stick with the Ti for awhile.. I'm running a Ti4200 with an AMD XP2000 CPU and have no complaints.

Don't let that cash burn a hole in your pocket.. just put it way and watch Tom's Hardware Guide.

A 9600 is basicly a 9500 (AKA Budget!) with a lower micron technology. Get a 9700 or higher smile_o.gif ...

After the upgrade.....

well after ati shader's day I felt so excited and convicted that I needed a 9800 pro card which I bought for 549 canadian $. I bought it then bcuz I imagine hl2 out on tuesday... now I feel ripped cuz the new cards are gonna be out soon, and they are gonna be very close to what I spent in the price , and are also gonna reduce the price of the other cards 9800 pro included. besides no half life 2 tuesday.

now I can get for half price the original 9500 and OC to 9700 pro (my friend just did it and I know where to find the good card) so should I just do that or keep that 9800 pro (in aquamark 2003 the 2 cards benchmark within 2000 points of each other...)

Try to RMA it. If they are decent company, and you still have all the packaging, they should allow you to swap it for a 9800XT when its out.

As for the price drop, its unlikely. ATi generally don't do that, and will simply replace cards like the 9800 Non Pro, with the 9800SE for roughly the same price. Might be a good idea to look out for places with lots of old stock they want to shift.

The XT will be out in two flavours. A 128mb and a 256mb version.

The 256 seems a bit of a overkill though, but if you want the best, than thats the one to go for. (It'll cost you mind)
