ralphwiggum 6 Posted October 2, 2003 Arnie is now sizing drapes at Sacramento. http://www.nbc4.tv/politics/2526119/detail.html Quote[/b] ]SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Though Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger stirred a crowd to standing ovations Wednesday with plans for his first 100 days as governor, many of the people who would have to work with him said the actor has promised more than he can deliver. Schwarzenegger told supporters he would rescind a newly tripled car tax on his first day in office, renegotiate state employee union contracts for cost savings and repeal a law to give driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. He also promised to freeze spending, audit the state budget and ban fund-raising during the budget process. "I can kill that tax with my signature alone and I will do exactly that," Schwarzenegger said to cheers of more than 500 supporters. No way, said state Department of Finance spokeswoman Anita Gore. <snip> Gore said finance department attorneys have already determined that a governor alone can't repeal the car tax hike. First, state law must be changed, and that would take a majority of the Legislature. <snip> Schwarzenegger told a cheering crowd Wednesday he would consolidate about 90 "categorical" educational programs, streamline regulations "and get more money directly to the classroom." But the Legislature killed a similar effort by Davis earlier this year. Davis wanted to put $11 billion targeted for specific school programs into large block grants and let schools decide how to spend it. Though a governor can eliminate and streamline some areas, "beyond that, he's going to have to have a Legislature willing to go there," said Kevin Gordon, executive director of California School Business officials feel sorry for him....maybe Arnie will know how Ventura felt, if he ever becomes the governor. Tex -USMC- 0 Posted October 8, 2003 Once again, it's time for.... Early Projections! The media puts its balls on the chopping block once again in the name of ratings. CNN: Davis out, zee Gubernator in. MSNBC: Ahnuld wins. FOX News: We're running out of original ways to say that Arnold wins, so we said "Hasta La Vista, Davis" ABC News: Arnold. Although they at least admitted all these projections are based on exit poll data, not actual vote-counting (they've barely started counting, really)

ralphwiggum 6 Posted October 8, 2003 http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/10/07/recall.main/index.html Quote[/b] ]California Gov. Gray Davis has conceded defeat in his recall election, and CNN is projecting that actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger has been voted in as the state's next governor. A whopping 72 percent of voters said they disapproved of Democrat Davis' job performance. Schwarzenegger, a Republican, is expected to address his supporters shortly. this ain't the first time voters make decision that would seem a bit dumb. at least the good thing is if the economy of the state fails even more we know who is culprit. and if it gets better, then we know who will get the credit. let's see if Ventura can teach Arnie something about realpolitik. Shades of Prop 13? Californians voted by a 65% margin to cap property taxes, and thereby kill local government's main source of funds, especially for education. This makes Californian local governments incredibly reliant on Sacramento for funding, which is fine when times are good, but not half so fine when times aren't. So now California has a massive budget shortfall, and its own citizens have just voted a man out of office because of it (among other, more petty reasons), despite the fact that over 20 years ago they made it effectively impossible for local government to function without massive and continuous infusions of cash from the state. Have a nice term, Arnold. You have not a smidgen of government experience; your electorate is chock full of badly informed, apathetic, selfish, shortsighted, stupid, and easily-manipulated constituents; your victory sets an ipso-facto precedent for your own recall in two years if things go badly; you'll be too busy in the next few weeks apologizing to all the women you might or might not have groped 25 years ago to fulfill any of the promises you made during the campaign, like eliminating the driver's license tax; your in-state party base is among the most dysfunctional Republican organizations in the country; and last but not least, you don't get to spend 3 hours a day in the gym anymore. God help you, because the people and government of California won't.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted October 8, 2003 One more thing... Excuse me, but have we as a country learned to see into the future, or are we just fucking idiots? Just where the hell do we get off calling the results of an election before even HALF of the precincts have reported in?? Am I missing something here? Have I gone insane, or am I just the only sane one left? Â Â Â Â Â Â Denoir, what's the weather like in Sweden this time of year? edit: Maria Shriver's still pretty hot, though. She could recall me any day.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted October 8, 2003 Hehe, I've been watching CNN's handy-dandy vote indexer- currently the recall percentages stand thusly: 46% Against, 54% For. That is from 56% For and 44% against about 20 minutes ago. Did I mention that Bustamente is only about 600,000 votes behind Arnold (and gaining slowly), and the biggest number on my mind is this: 47% of precincts have reported. I fervently hope that this election turns the early predictions on their ear, and finally, finally sounds the death-knell for exit-polling.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted October 8, 2003 the statistics used in this case is less likely to faluter. with about half of the precincts reporting, chance of rest of the votes iverturning the situation is pretty slim. right now yes on recall is about 400,000 votes over no. that means, for this to be overturn, the amount of "no" votes on recall should exceed 400,000 votes or more over the other choice. now chance of that happening given, current 47% counting is a bit of a stretch. but then again, who knows? there still is possibility that that could happen. but it's really slim. some other stuffs: Gallager(comedian) got 2570 votes, went around jumping celebrating Larry Flint: 7000s Mary Carey cook(porn star): 4500s Coleman: 5000s Huffington: 30,000 lowest is 105 votes. ralphwiggum 6 Posted October 8, 2003 another funny point is that exit poll claims the percentage of voting machines causing problems were around 2%, not different from older punch card ballot systems. great, we spent 250mil for that?

ralphwiggum 6 Posted October 8, 2003 about 3-4 weeks ago. he bankrolled about 1.3 million for this and what he get? sidelining from GOP. if there is any consolidation, he should get some pat on the back by GOP for this. anyways: who wants to bet this is what will happen in Sacramento? denoir 0 Posted October 8, 2003 You should see in Sweden which has an uneven distribution of precincts (size-wise). So there are many small precincts up north where there are only mosquitoes and communists/hard-core socialists. Since they're small, their counting is finished first, so you always see like 95% for the most left option of whatever the vote is about. Later it evens out as the larger, more southern mosquito-free precincts send in their counts.
