What does one of these cost?<span id='postcolor'>

Whether you can even buy one depends entirely on where you live -- my home state of California has banned them, for example.

But they are available, brand new and with scope, for about $1200 to $2200, depending on the maker.

Hey guys, look how the real Dragunov scope looks like..

svd_ret.jpg

<span id='postcolor'>

Not all dragunovs have this sort of scope, there are different versions, depending on the barrel

Nero85, What the hell are you talking about? All russian SVD´s are equiped with standard PSO-1 scope. Only special services get newer scope, like 3x9x42 PSO and other PSO models. If the military buys SVDS then they will be equiped with PSO or 3-9x42 MINUTA

Yes, a lot of guys know the reticle is too low in OPF.

But just like the LAW reticle, BIS doesn't seem to want to fix it.

Only about half of the people playing OPF know how to use the ranging system of the scope anyways.

And Nero85, all SVD Dragunovs are equipped with the 4x PSO-1 scope that looks just like the one in the picture.

It's probably the best non-electric ranging system ever designed.

Anyways, a Russian SVD would cost you $1000 US. But the problem is that you'll have a hard time finding 7.62x54-mm ammunition for it.

Russia pretty much made it illegal for their sniper ammunition to be exported.

But the chinese do a very well done replica of the SVD, and ammunition. But more expensive, I hear.

I would imagine that the Chinese version would be cheaper than the original. Though this is only my speculation, as most stuff that comes out of China is crap anyway, thats why its cheap.

7.62x54mmR can't be found at every local store, but there is plenty if you know where to look. This is even easier if you reload your own ammo. Self-reloaded ammo is cheaper and better (depending loader's skill) than the regular factory match grade stuff.

What do you mean by "too low" ?

In OPF, the first chevron(^) is at the center of the screen.

In real life, the second chevron(^) is supposed to be in the center.

It's hard to explain because it's not very noticable. But if you compare a screen shot of the OPF sight, and the real shot of the SVD sight, you'll notice a huge difference.

I assume, like me, you are an Aussie.

You might be interested to know that the weapon he used had been previously handed in during a "gun amnesty" to return illegal weapons. Kinda make you wonder how it got into his hands? If I were a conspiracy theorist I might even think he was a government stooge used in a plot to disarm the populace.

It really s**ts me when the government makes a knee jerk reaction to things like this, in a pathetic and transparent bid to grab votes. If the Australian goverment were serious about gun control, why did they wait until something like this happened? *snif sniff* Do I smell hypocracy?

If the particualr psycho in question was so keen to kill people, he could have easily killed as many, or even more, by plowing a car at high speed into a crowded shopping area, for instance. The real problem isn't guns, it's people. If half the effort was put into diagnosing people with psychotic tendencies and doing research into this kind of mental illness than was put into so called "gun control", I think more lives would be saved in the end.

In the meantime legitimate sporting shooters have to pay the penalty for some idiot's temper tantrum. Its the same old government line - one person does something stupid, so we'll punish everyone for it. Unless of course there's tax to be earned on it.....why not ban tobacco? The figures of people dying from lung cancer and smoking related illnesses compared to those killed in shootings (in Australia) would be very intersting to see. I would estimate an almost 100 to 1 ratio, if not higher.

Anyway, thats my rant. And for all those who lost loved ones in this shooting incident, I am truly sorry for your loss. But guns simply aren't the problem.

What I've heard Dragunov is only useful as a sniper rifle with original Russian ammo (don't ask me why..), that they manufacture in one plant somewhere behind the Ural mountains.

As for the self-reloaded ammo I guess you'd still need "original" bullets.

That's what I heard from my "gun crazy" friend.

Russia's communist powers make the SVD Dragunov loyal to Russian products only.

If you try to use foreign ammo, the rifle will turn it's muzzle at you, and kill you.

Then a Russian to come out of no where to re-claim his rifle.

I'm from Holland where guns are banned altogether (apart from hunting shotguns for few selected animal'control' hunters).

I don't know this story about someone rampaging in Oz with an AK but my question is: why the hell should civilians be allowed to have automatic weapons?

I mean hunting rifles and stuff sure. But it's not like hunters (imho nobody else needs to have firearms, apart law enforcement..) wanna perforate animals with 99999 RPM of lead?

shouldn't matter if you know what the grain and type of bullet they use, not to mention amount fo gun powder.

yes, you can buy match grade 7.62x54mm ammo. look in Gun list or Shotgun news every now and then.

their is also a .308 version of the Draganov. it was either the chinese or romanians that make it.

Problem is, they didn't just ban semi-auto's (full automatics have never been legal in Australia, it was a semi-auto version he used).

At the first the ban was just semi-auto centrefire's, then it spread to semi-auto rimfires and shotguns, and now it's virtually impossible to own anything more than an air rifle without a wad of paperwork and a goddamn high-security pass. Besides, while upright citizens have almost no access to firearms, the criminal underworld will never be restricted by legal bans.

Anyway, my main concern isn't the ban on weapons itself, but more the governments reasons and they way the steamrollered the democratic process to do it.

well mr Fubar you got a point.

Take Oslo for example.

Gunning and killing every weekend and for that weapons are being banned.

But if you know where in Oslo you can buy a FN MAG on the street everything from Light Machine guns to lighter pistols...

And what does we sport shooters get? well a hel we can't have anything while thoose who use it the other way around they get their guns anyways.
