Also theres meant to be a giant planet tht has an orbit that strays into earths zone every now and then. Scary
edc 0 Posted July 15, 2003 Interesting. Do you have a link to the story about the planet wandering into earth's path? I don't think it mentioned anything like that in the article you linked to.
Black Knight 0 Posted July 15, 2003 Interesting. Â Do you have a link to the story about the planet wandering into earth's path? Â I don't think it mentioned anything like that in the article you linked to. I heard a lot of stories of planets or meteors that are to hit the earth at one point but I doubt any of that will ever happen, and even if it did, I bet we would have the technology and brains to deal with it. blackdog~ 0 Posted July 15, 2003 I hate this stuff. Just to scare me. Heh - on the discovery channel they had a special on super tsunamis and super volcanoes. Super tsunami could be spawned from a remote island which is about to collapse and has the possibility of destroying up to 1 mile inland of all the eastern united states coast. Super volcanoes are massive volcanoes underground which could lead to the extinction of every human being and animal on the earth because of poisonous gas. Apparently, we're due for another as history suggests. Maybe they confused the firey extinctions by meteors with this and this is just made up. Hopefully When will it next erupt? Scientist have discovered that the ground in Yellowstone if 74cm higher than in was in 1923 - indicating a massive swelling underneath the park. The reservoir is filling with magma at an alarming rate. The volcano erupts with a near-clockwork cycle of every 600,000 years. The last eruption was more than 640,000 years ago - we are overdue for annihilation.

I wonder why there isn't more hype about it, as it doesn't sound very good.

Yeah there was a program about that on Channel 4 (I think it was that channel) about Tsunamis...One actually happened in Canada and there's a guy who actually witnessed a much smaller (relatively of course) one there also (About 35 years ago I think it was). They could tell by the way the trees only grew from a certain distance up the banks of the body of water. It was caused by a huge avalanche.

booradley60 0 Posted July 15, 2003 I agree with the dust scenario. Well... some would immediately be turned to vapor, others would die in a nuclear-winter kinda deal (I guess it would be cosmic winter or something). There's only one hope, the meteor must knock Earth toward the sun so we can stay warm... wait a minute...that might not work out so well...

drewb99 0 Posted July 15, 2003 A meteor is easy to divert, if it doesn't fall into Jupiter or the Sun, we can just fire a big rocket at it to push it out of a collision course with us Volcanos and tsunamis are a bit harder to prevent

Despite all the scientific stuff, how could you possible know it was 640,000 year ago that it erupted. AND how do you know 600,000 year before that it erupted? Badgerboy 0 Posted July 15, 2003 The only problem with that plan, is the fact we see most meteors etc, AFTER they have passed us. Bit of a fucker eh?

Akira 0 Posted July 15, 2003 A meteor is easy to divert, if it doesn't fall into Jupiter or the Sun, we can just fire a big rocket at it to push it out of a collision course with us Depends on the size. And the velocity. Most meteor's and asteroids travel at high rates of speed. Couple that with their generally large mass, and all a rocket will do is make it madder. edc 0 Posted July 15, 2003 I've heard something about just changing the color of part of a meteor/asteroid's surface, could change it's heating from the sun, and because of that, change it's path, or something like that. As long, as we knew about it atleast maybe 10 yrs in advance, I really think we could stop one.
