red oct 2 Posted July 1, 2003 "Al-Qaeda joke sparks air scare" I am a bit surprised they only suspened the Swiss air traffic controler from work. Do something like that here in the states and you become liable to be sent to old smoky.
ran 0 Posted July 1, 2003 at least , the french defencemeens deployed for the Evian summit were efficient ....
FSPilot 0 Posted July 1, 2003 they'll probably fire him, he's only suspended until he's put on trial still pretty stupid though
red oct 2 Posted July 1, 2003 Well in my opinion the man responsible should have been arrested on site. Why do they need to "think about it"? It's a no brainer, he should go to jail. Not only that, but this is the same air traffic control tower that was responsible for that accident involving the passenger airliner that collided w/ the russian cargo plane. ran 0 Posted July 2, 2003 so  im  the  only one  who t hinks its funny   this could have led to the destruction of a french military transport helicopter which , knowing the context was filled with troops . So , if you find that risking the life of 20+ soldiers and the job of a fighter pilot because of a bad joke is funny then ..... -edit-: hopefully the weather was good and the pilot could have a visual ID of the target

ran 0 Posted July 2, 2003 i hate stupid pranks/jokes but over all , i hate those who make them and believe me , it's not that i lack humour
Warin 0 Posted July 2, 2003 I'm with Ran on this one. Practical jokes are one thing, but if not for the sharp eyes of those pilots, there would be dead people, all over a 'practical joke' by some air traffic moron. Heh. Tell ya what Renegade. If you think it's funny, we'll load you into a Blackhawk, then have you designated AQ. Then when you get shot down...you can tell us how funny the joke was
USSoldier11B 0 Posted July 2, 2003 Yeah, I'm with Ran too, it's like yelling "bomb" on a crowded plane.
hellfish6 7 Posted July 2, 2003 It would have been funny if it was on a movie or TV, but not in real life.
Jester983 0 Posted July 2, 2003 Like it was in meet the parents. Where he said "bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb." many times. That was funny. On topic though. This guy wasnt thinking. Wasnt even funny. Im glad no one got hurt. I think his punishment should be those pilots kicking the crap out of him. But that wouldnt really be legall. So, I hope he gets some well spent time with a guy named "bubba" in jail.

Renagade 0 Posted July 2, 2003 joking around aside wasn`t there any more procedures to follow before intercepting like radio back to base for more information or is a little radar tag all it takes to get planes shooting each other up,imagine osama getting his hands on that and renamingg aircraft to allah, sadamn hussien ,the iraq information minister, kim jong and satan Quote[/b] ]A Skyguide controller told the Russian plane to descend to avoid a collision with the cargo plane, but that kept the charter jet on collision course with the cargo plane, which was descending in accordance with its collision-avoidance equipment. these guys crack me up,playing bumper cars with planes, who needs al quida when u got them

There should be more than tagging a name to defining a target. not when it's for the security of the diplomats and affair men of the G8 , if a single , i mean if a single thing had slipped through all the security , the world would have been litterally decapitated and the french security services would have been blamed for that , so in the case of this kind of meeting , better have too much security than not enough
bn880 5 Posted July 3, 2003 I don't know, I laughed a little when I read the story. It's funny now because no one was killed, but I think the air traffic controller didn't realize it was possible for anyone to shoot the heli down just because of a label. I mean, you need a bit of communication before you intercept and shoot down any aircraft right? Pretty crazy all in all.

I mean, you need a bit of communication before you intercept and shoot down any aircraft right?  Pretty crazy all in all. in that case it was a matter of seconds before the helicopter reached the critical zone , so , no way to make a full interception procedure , and since this plane was labelled ..... , it was considered as a threat and had normally to be shot down
raedor 8 Posted July 3, 2003 is the life of leaders of g8 countrys more valuable than the life of anybody else? no, it isnt. it's only a waste of money to send thousands of policeman and soldiers to evian for the lifes of 8 people...

raedor 8 Posted July 4, 2003 maybe they are more than 8, but if on the other side are six miliard people... and yes, it IS worth spending a single euro and more. BUT: old greek philosophists would say "metron ariston" (the measure is the best) or "meden agan" (nothing too much). and in this point i agree with em.
