Koolkid101 0 Posted June 24, 2003 I'm pretty sure addon making causes the maker to lose money but how much? Also do you think its worth it with all the complaining?

ale2999 0 Posted June 24, 2003 well I guess lose time = lose money but the gratification in seeing ur work at the end makes it worth it
Tigershark_BAS 0 Posted June 24, 2003 I think it should be considered in terms of cost and not money. Money is just one of the costs. 2002 Website hosting. ~300USD 2003 Website hosting plus domain name registration (new host) ~100USD Graphics tablet purchased specifically for texturing BAS Addons=200USD Time taken away from girlfriend/friends/family whilst making addons. 4 hours per day on average x 365 days=1460 hours Cost: Uncalculable Sleepless nights: Countless Regular day job hours lost due to sleepless nights: Countless Money made from addons: $0.00 Reason for becoming an addon maker: insanity

Sorry about the lost time with family/friends/ and especially girlfriend, but a sincere thanks for all your work!
Tigershark_BAS 0 Posted June 24, 2003 Schoeler...thanks for the sentiments. No....I don't think BAS would ever ask for money. I guess at the end of day it's a hobby that you would pour money into just like any other hobby (airsoft, scale modeling, guitar, etc.) OFPEC was different beast costing me in excess of 1000USD to run...mainly to host high bandwidth downloads and such. It really needed donations. If we ever made any money out of BAS I would want the crew to have it. They work damn hard and would deserve more than anything I could justify. My post above was just to put some perspective on the addon making paradox. Addon Making=Hobby however Addon Making can also equal grief and frustration....which kinda makes you wonder why you do it sometimes. I guess people don't always appreciate what gets sacrificed to make these which is why I was interested in replying to this thread. I applaud Koolkid for at least wondering and raising the question. Forgot to add this in my post above: Releasing an addon after months of work, first post in its release thread is a complaint = Priceless
Schoeler 0 Posted June 24, 2003 Ah the joys of pouring your heart and soul into a work of art, the countless hours spent trying to perfect it, the blood, sweat tears, anguish in tediously accomplishing the work down to completing the last detail of the project only to have some 15 year old kid who's never had a job, girlfriend etc.., never even bought or worked hard for anything himself, treat you like you're his mother (or worse, slave) by demanding you fix some minor thing you overlooked, and NOW, NOW, NOW! Major Fubar 0 Posted June 24, 2003 Reason for becoming an addon maker: insanity I would have thought that the reason was the same as for those people who do volunteer work for the needy - giving something back to the "community"... I'm not much of an addon maker, but that's why I created my links page etc.
sanctuary 19 Posted June 24, 2003 Oh some billions of dollars are lost in addon making ;) Seriously , i think the biggest part of the cost is the tools for addon making As some people use Max , you probably know that it is not really cheap as a software by example, some graphic table used by some people are not cheap too For the internet website cost , not every addon maker have their own domains, so it can be negligible if free hosting or the own ISP hosting is used. But the result can be good for the addon maker : fame , glory , women ;) , or even to be recruited by a studio for some of them (in the model maker community in http://www.polycount.com , it has already happened some times)

I'm not much of an addon maker, but that's why I created my links page etc. Â Usually people who volunteer for the needy are usually APPRECIATED for their efforts by all they help. There is the subtle difference ;) Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying that all members of this community are unappreciative. Let's say there are a lotta bad apples in the barrel

But still....a lot of mods..pour money into their own sites to bring the community quality of service. ie. The site not going up and down like a brides nightie due to bandwidth caps etc.

Balschoiw 0 Posted June 24, 2003 Quote[/b] ]Yes...in reality...it's the time and effort that "costs" more than the money. So what ? It´s a hobby and passion. Like any other hobby except some things that happen under the sheet it costs money. You don´t have to think that eternal gratitude will be the reward. It´s a moment of fame and than the users move on to search for new highlights. That´s the way it is and the way I like it. Community is the magic word. Self-profilating people don´t fit a word like community. It is fun to contribute to the community with addons, missions, isles whatever. And you do get feedback. What else can we expect ? Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted June 24, 2003 And u get respect. I have tried so many of the addons that exist for OFP and I must say that everytime I see one of the modders here online I say: "huh, isnt that the one who did the ...?" But I must say that I especially respect those of you that created easy wizards, guides, linkpages and fori for people who want to learn about modelling. In the end lots of the people that created new vehicules, arms...a.s.o did their first steps with ur support. Thank you!
