John C Flett 0 Posted May 29, 2003 Just a brief mention of an amusing little piece. The new PC Zone has one of their small reality check articles. That is to say they try in real life something which they only know from computer games and then decide how accurate the game is. In this case they sent one of there writers to learn to drive a real tank. In the end he gave OFP five out of five deciding it was spot on. Trivial, but I thought it might amuse or please. GoOB 0 Posted May 29, 2003 Yes Swedish PC-Gamer also deemed OFP a better tank sim then the Armored fist series. I cant say it's more detailed but OFP sure captures the feeling of driving in a 40 ton hunk of metal.
Major Gripe 0 Posted May 29, 2003 I never knew real tanks bounced so well! Huh, I learn something new every day!
Milkman 1 Posted May 29, 2003 Yeah, and I wasn't aware I could get an M60a2 up to 100mph on a slope! Anyways, Flett, does PC Zone have a website? I would like a link to chekc them out.
Poet 0 Posted May 29, 2003 I never knew real tanks bounced so well! Â Huh, I learn something new every day! Really? Â You should check out the Realism Sim Battlefield 1942. The Tanks in that game bounce constantly, and a hand grenade exploding next to a Tank usually spins it 360 Degrees! Games have much to teach us! Â

nyles 11 Posted May 30, 2003 Now that's pathetic....Those "testers" maybe shouldn't have checked battlefield1942 and operation flashpoint. I for one would say that tank driving/handling in ofp is extremely far off from reality. Sure it is still the better simulated than in many other games, but if you want to catch a somewhat real tank atmosphere they should have tried Steel Beasts or some other decent simulator that acutally is/was in use with several armies. I bet that BIS/Coalscent had to change a lot to the physics and handling of tanks for VBS1 until the military was pleased.
Sauragnmon 0 Posted May 30, 2003 Personally, for all the annoyance, I like OFP's control for tanks.. and after working with the Hip in the one Red Hammer mission, I found that helicopters, though not quite the best handling as in a genuine sim, are fairly good to control... but I won't trade in Hind for OFP's flying of a Hind... never. tankieboy 0 Posted May 30, 2003 I used to drive tanks for a living in 2RTR for ten years. Chief, Chall, Chall2, Scim, 432, Samaritan, Sultan, Spartan and even a US M1A1 in southern Germany! I think OFP is a very good tank sim.
Stag 0 Posted May 30, 2003 Yeah, and I wasn't aware I could get an M60a2 up to 100mph on a slope! That's easy. Getting it from 100 to 0 without a visit to an intensive care unit is the real trick.
