Shashman 0 Posted May 22, 2003 Well after getting kicked here there and everywhere and being called all sorts of names I'm getting a bit sick of people's attitudes towards 56k users... Believe it or not some people CANNOT upgrade to broadband  So here's a thread I thought I'd start where people could put their tips and tricks for getting the most out of your 56k... I don't wanna see bollocks like "56k sucks get broadband man!" Thanks in advance for any useful input
RED 0 Posted May 22, 2003 It is always a good idea to make sure there is no other network activity, shut down programs like ICQ, MSN and voice communications. There are alternatives to broadband, these services depend on where you live though. RED
shrike 0 Posted May 22, 2003 Well I can't give any useful tips as I stopped using analogue modems 8 years ago. But you should know you're welcome anytime Shash :-)
joltan 0 Posted May 22, 2003 56k is a bit weak for OFP, that's a fact. Still, there is no reason to kick these players - they don't cause any problems apart from their mission downloads taking longer (which can be avoided if the server offers his missions for download on the website). Some missions (especially complex coops with many ai units) may be unplayable for you, but usually you should be able to play. If you can get ISDN then try that - you have 64kbit guaranteed (with analog modems you seldom get the theoretical max. connection speed of 56kbit) and that already improves gameplay very much. Shashman 0 Posted May 22, 2003 Yeah obviously I wouldn't hesitate about getting a better connection, but the simple fact is that I can't...I am at university and living in student accommodation and the university accommodation's telecoms are in the hands of one company...they supply all the phones and phone lines to each room. The problem with this is that to get anything else, like ISDN or ADSL,you need to have a BT line, which I don't...And there's the problem
Gourka 0 Posted May 22, 2003 The only thing I see for you is to play with your MTU. Maybe you can optimise the speed with a tool like this: Easy MTU Quote[/b] ]FindMTU and the benchmark are now part of EasyMTU. So it's easier to find the right setting and change them right away. The buttons on each individual tabsheet are gone. Instead of that there are single buttons for all tabsheets. The best settings are now one click away! Improving dial-up connection speed is hot. More and more comercial programs give you the chance to set MaxMTU. The one is even higher priced than the other. But why buy such a tool? There are good freeware alternatives and you even can change the settings yourself in the registry. Good luck
Mister Frag 0 Posted May 22, 2003 I would also scan for spyware using LavaSoft's Ad-Aware, since many spyware and malware components chew up part of the limited modem bandwidth for their own purposes, as well as introducing additional latency. Finally, disable the QoS (Quality of Service) component in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The QoS component reserves part of the bandwidth for out-of-band data, and if you don't need QoS information, you would needlessly limit total data throughput. KDog35 0 Posted May 27, 2003 I'm also on 56k and get kicked from most of the servers. For some reason, I takes me a while to connect. Once connected and at the screen to jump in, my ping goes down to about 190-320. What I don't understand is most of you smart people on cable know this a still kick us. And every effin' time we hear "dude, your ping".... and we have to say, over and over again, "it will go down". I belong to a Team based in Europe and I live in the USA. Most of my playing time is in the evenings (PST) and our server is usually empty at that time. So I like to join other servers to play. BE NICE and let us 56kers play!!.
