shadow 6 Posted December 11, 2002 Is Söldner the first game that can stand up against OFP? To me it looks like its a slightly different approach but tries to achieve the same aspets as BIS pulled off very well. Unfortunately the makers of Söldner have no plans to implement 1st-person-view (bummer ) ...but I'm trying to talk some sense into them by telling them how wonderful OFP is and that their game already have lost against OFP if they don't implement 1st.view etc bla-bla What do you all think about Söldner ? Can it compete and compare against OFP ? -keep in mind that the developers loved both OFP and CS(ouch)
mr. Duck 0 Posted December 11, 2002 It could be... If they made it open for 3th party addons. And if they have an editor, and a 1st person view. And if the AI is alot better than Ofp... We'll see...
theavonlady 2 Posted December 11, 2002 For an alpha version, not bad. Some of the lanscaping is impressive. Wait and see..........................
RED 0 Posted December 11, 2002 It looks a bit arcade-ish with the 3rd person view as it is. It looks a bit like a playstation game. The colours look a bit bright, but I am just picky Edit: An example of what I mean is http://soldner.jowood.com/forum....tid=508 RED
red oct 2 Posted December 11, 2002 err well they arn't offering much in the way of screen shots are they? the few that are up, it does look like its worth checking into.
KeyCat 131 Posted December 11, 2002 Looks quite good but I'm sorry... If there isn't a 1st person view they loose me as a customer. But I do like the human 3D-models and just realise BIS has to do something about their really ugly arms and hands in current OFP:R /Christer (a.k.a KeyCat)

bn880 5 Posted December 11, 2002 Hmm, you can destroy everything, even the landscape... cool. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"> Once again Harry had to get up early, the breakfast tasted awful and Sergant Bill Pepper spread his horrible mood around the camp. Like the former days this day didn?t look promising. For the last three days the enemy's bullets hailed over their heads which forced Harry and his comrades into the soaked and nasty trenches. The moment to strike back drew near. At ten o'clock sharp Harry left his trench, in order to take charge of that little problem. After approx. 2 hours march, our hero reached the top of a small hill where he could survey the enemy?s advance. Carefully he choosed a suitable hideaway in the dense foliage which offered him a good cover. He waited till his pulse calmed down, then he coolly got the rocket launcher ready. Two minutes later he observed the street through the reticule which lied directly in front of him. From now on his sharpened instincts domininated his perfectly trained body. He would wait till the right target comes into sight ? even hours. But that wasn?t necessary: After barely half an hour he heard his first victim approaching. A few minutes later he spotted the first hostile tank emerging in his reticule: a T80! The effort up to this hill seemed to be paid off. His rocket launcher would have a hard time to beat that monster made of pure steel. But Harry wouldn?t be Harry if he didn?t have a clue how he could set up a trap for the beast. His adrenalin started to pump into his veins while Harry kept his aim exactly in the middle of his reticule and slowly pulled the trigger. His war-experience paid off again: <http://soldner.jowood.com/images/render_soldier_01.gif> The missile immediately hit right in front of the tank and drilled a huge crater into the asphalt. The left track of the tank digged itself into this crater and the steel giant was stuck helplessly in the muddy soil. Well done, Harry! At least positive news at this horror-day. Nevertheless the joy about this victory wouldn?t last long. He heard them before they came around the bend: dozens of nervous soldiers, yelling and flocking together to look out for the dangerous private with the rocket launcher. It seemed that they observed the trajectory of the missile because the troops approached closer and closer to Harry?s hiding place and the first bullets stroke critically near at hand. What do now? His ammo was blown - so the launcher was worthless. At least he still had a stock of blasting C-4. ?Never go to a party without a handful of C-4? ? Harry regularly enjoined that special motto on his recruits. He crawled to the large deciduous trees near his hideaway and glued the C-4 parcel to the tree with the thickest trunk. Harry inserted the fuse, took cover and waited a few seconds. WHOOM! With a big bang the huge tree smashed onto the ground tearing out smaller trees on his way down. It worked out! Now the gigantic boughs with their dense foliage offered Harry a perfect camouflage. While the enemy?s bullets desperately whistled through the shrubbery and only few insects fell victim to them, Harry set off to his home base. ?I never was a fan of insects, anyway?, Harry admitted. His path led him through a small village which Harry knew well from his evening excursions into the art of liquor distillery. But the streets were deserted. At least it seemed so to Harry. Slowly but surely a well-known, very bad feeling crawled upwards of Harry?s back. When it reached his shoulders, Harry realized that there was something wrong ? totally wrong! He barely finished that thought as a jeep full with hostile soldiers emerged in about 400 meter distance and drove directly into his direction. Instinctively Harry crouched down and tried to escape through the front door of the next building. But it was locked! ?Damned!? There was absolutely not the right moment to look for the key under the doormat. Okay, the second C-4 package was for it! Seconds later the enormous oak door transformed into a pile of handy wood chips that would just be sufficient for a nice campfire. Well, a new commission for the Carpenter... With a flying dive Harry disappeared inside the building and escaped from his enemies the second time. The hard training with Sergant Pepper paid well, again. Now you certainly want to know how the adventure of Harry Bosco continues. Will he reach his home base safely? Will the mood of sergeant Pepper finally change after Harry?s successful trip? Will Harry call a carpenter ? but where the heck are the Yellow Pages? But this is a new story... <span id='postcolor'> I think this will be a different game type. Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted December 11, 2002 BTW First person view. Do you want to know for what I hate the Playstation? It is those shooter games where you neither see first person nor 3rd person but through an in-room camera. So if you run through a short tunnel there will be a camera following you at the beginning and come near the other side a different camera will follow from a totally different angle. DAMN I hate those Cameras! I WANT 1st person! Even though I think Mafia did a good job in creating a good 3rd person view!
mr. Duck 0 Posted December 11, 2002 One thing that I find very interesting is the dynamic landscape. They should implement that in a possible ofp2.

ralphwiggum 6 Posted December 11, 2002 since this is alpha, we can't say much, but landscape seems great. and ability to manipulate them seems great. however, i can't help think of OFP when i see that picture of a guy with Stinger(?) on his back looks almost like OFP. i think there also was a game called Soldat. is this the same one? Lazarus_Long 0 Posted December 11, 2002 I just spent some time in the Soldner forum bitching about the 3rd person view, and some other stupid things that they are planning to do to ruin this potentially good game. Â Did you know they are not even going to allow for more than one person controlling a vehicle (driver, gunner etc.)? Â Even the arcadeish BF1942 does that. Â The more I read about Soldner, the more I dislike it... I guess I should wait for the demo before making any judgements, but I'm not getting my hopes up yet. One thing is for sure, it won't be even close to competing with our beloved, but aging, OFP. Ho hum... When's OFP2 comming out again?

Col. Kurtz 0 Posted December 12, 2002 I took a look at both the forums and the website a while ago and I can say this. I think they do plan to have a First person View. The game will have multi-player games on servers with up to 128 people. The server will be able to choice between two realism modes. It can have arcade mode were people can take multiple hits, then there will be realistic mode were people can die very easily. This game is been made by the people who made Panzer Elite which is a tank warfare game set in WW2 and is very realistic.
Aaron Kane 0 Posted December 12, 2002 Well isnt that a coincidence! I just downloaded the aging demo of Panzer Elite no more than 30 minutes ago. Dont that beat all!

FSPilot 0 Posted December 12, 2002 I'll probably pick it up if Col.Kurtz is on target.
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted December 12, 2002 What I think will make the game good is 1. Destroyable landscape and buildings. 2. Realism. 3. Drivable vehicles 4. Random campaign generator for SP 5. New weapons released about every week. And while it has similarities with OFP, I dont think its exactly in the same class.
FSPilot 0 Posted December 12, 2002 It will definately compete with OFP. Especially if it has the first person view. Even more so if they advertise a lot, even if they don't have the first person view.
