Whats the on-line record?

Recommended Posts

I see quite a few OFP:R servers in A.S.E with 66 player slots and I'm curious what the (stable) "on-line record" is with OFP:R 1.75+ using sockets? Whats the largest multiplayer battle you've been in to date via Internet?

when did u get 40 players dmg most ive ever seen is 32, their was one server to wif mx payers set to sumthin like 1000000 tounge.gif. With ofp numbers tend to stay at a level, u start the game wif like 15 and after about 30mins usually 5 will leave and near the end u might get 5 join.

There were a large number ranged between 26-48 of us playing at one time on Sunday NZ time.

And I'd agree with "LT Damage" , there was some major LAG issues, the highest ping I saw was under 300ms and most (70-80%) of the other connections were below the 100ms ping rate.

There was about 10 of us that were running under the 60ms ping rate, and we all got the LAG issue.

FragHaus had 64 ppl at once and said it wasn't that bad. i guess one of those lucky days wink.gif

most public servers i play tends to be anywhere from 4 to 24 or even 32.

it all depends on many things. so hard to tell.

yea most i've played was that game on FragHaus with 64 players at once. It was crazy!!!! Vehicles flying everywhere, people getting shot left and right, it was really a fun experience. I'd like to see more online battles with large amounts of players like that biggrin.gif

If my memory serves FragHaus uses DirectPlay instead of Sockets? Anyway, cool to hear about it and I assume it requires a big CPU and lots of RAM as well as a fat line to host that many without lag issues.

I also like to see more "large scale battles" but one of the problems is to find enough dedicated OFP'ers willing to stay connected for the time it takes to set it up... Maybe we could decide a date here in the forum to see if we could break the 64 player record someday?

I would gladly offer my server for this attempt, it should be able to handle this (at least I hope).

Unfortunately most player's attention span is too short to wait until it's full...

I Think you need to upgrade your Twin 2Ghz to a 3.06Ghz machine if you want 64 players without lag ... and then make a special low-CPU map on desert Island for the attempt.

I would expect the record should only stand if it runs lag-free for all the 30mins of the round.

I cant believe Fraghaus ran with 64 people in vehicles lag-free and with over 15FPS ... sounds impossible to me, but maybe, just maybe ...

You are right, I am not sure about the machine being able to handle it but I really would like to try. At least I would know if it was worth spending so much money on this box  confused.gif

And it's a dual 2,2 GHz  Xeon tounge.gif  loads of full speed 1st level cache and stuff. Don't know if OFP takes advantage of it though.

Of course we would have to use a map with little scripting and not too many vehicles...and players with low pings.

I think it's worth a try!

FragHaus record was set running the beta patch that came out right before resistance..... what was it, 1.60 i think? And yes it was able to handle it without lag or framerate loss. The server computers are HUGE and extremely powerful, and it's my understanding that Ed had done a lot of tweaking and talking to BIS officials in order to maximize performance on the server. As of right now FragHaus is running v1.90 under DirectPlay (IP 209.240.25.25) and the limit is set at 24 players, but that's just because there haven't been many people online lately. If you guys are up for it, I'm sure we could set a date and crank the player limit back up to go for a record. Post your thoughts here--your thoughts really do count!

Yea ofps great when u have lotas ppl but ppl just arnt prepared to wait, they wait 2mins for a game and when its over they want to play right then and now. 64 players would be awsome, sumtimes i go play on the woffentstein 64 palyer severs and its heaps of fun i can jus imagine it in ofp much better than a 5v5 ctf(nother name for dm).

64 player RTS.... ahh the insanity!!! longest RTS game we played on fraghaus ran more than 3 hours. i cant even imagine what it'd be like with 64 people. i say we go for it. get some people willing to take the time and get a game set up and see if we can hit 64 again.

Well BigQEd and FragHaus have alot of pipe and alot of power. We should be able to do it unless half the server is in europe. And yeah we might have to run sockets (shudders), eventhough i dont think its any better or worse. Anyways if you all want to do something, im sure i can help persuade BigQ. biggrin.gif

lol that would suck. but nah we're usually pretty good at FragHaus about comiing back for people if they disconnect at the start. as long as everyone doesn't have to re-d/l the map, then i don't see a major problem. all we need now is a large number of players willing to try this out!

I'd like to be part of the attempt, but unfortunately i'm in europe. we could try in europe too... Anybody with a big server and a 100 Mbps connection - i know several places with 100+ Mbps connections and i'll ask if I could host a server for just one day.

Ok, let's try this!

Our server (ZEUS) will be dedicated to an attempt to break the record on the weekend from 10.01.2003 to 12.01.2003. The server is located in southern Germany.

The delay is mainly due to our website still being under construction. I would like it to be online to gather the feedback after we tried.

I will post in an extra thread when the time has come. I will post on other major OFP sites as well to gather as many people as possible.

What do you think about limiting people's pings to a max of 200? I don't enforce this policy on our server normally but to achieve the highest possible number of players in a playable match I think we would need a limit.

However I still think that regardless of machine power it will be pretty difficult to have a lagfree 64 player match...

Bring it on Ed wink.gif

2003-01-10 is booked in my calender so count me in Shrike!

Don't worry about it being a few weeks away, in fact I think that it's a good thing since we all have time to spread the words all over. So scramble and let see if we Europeans can beat the US record next month wink.gif

Merry Christmas to all!

Agree with HT about the ping, we will probably need all the players we can get...
