Paratrooper survives chute failure

Recommended Posts

Story

my first thought was, Holy shiiiiat! he went thru a roof too!

then I read at the bottom:

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Another Yugoslav holds the record for surviving a fall from the greatest altitude without a parachute. Air hostess Vesna Vulovic plunged 33,330 feet into a snowbound forest in Czechoslovakia in 1972 when the airliner she was on exploded.

<span id='postcolor'>

then my mouth opened. because 33,330 is like 4-5 miles...

I think during WW2 two people survived falling from their bombers. One hit a snowbank, the other hit a tree. I think one was a brit, and the other was a Russian

An interesting true story I read happened in WWII also. A USAAF B-24 had finished a bombing raid over Yoguslavia when a flak shell cut the plane in half. The rear-gunners parachute had gone with the rest of the plane, so there was nothing for him to do except go back to his seat. The tail section of the plane floated down and the gunner was unharmed wow.gif

Yeah, there are several stories from WW2 about bomber pilots surviving falls from great heights (and I mean great heights).

The Russian who fell and hit the snowbank was caught by Germans, who suspected he was a spy because the frontline was so far away, and they didn't believe his story smile.gif

Next time I go sky-diving I'll be sure to forget my chute. Maybe they'll name a crater after me.

I heard of a video of some guy surviving a parachute failure.  It was on America's Funniest Home Videos (which I think should be called "America's Most Violent Accidents")

Seriously, they always show people getting into these really violent accidents and not getting hurt.  If you ask me, it's worse than all those video games adults are always rambling about.

The paratropper's chances of survival were actually much better than those of many of the WW II bomber crewmen or that of the stewardess.

Apparently, his chutes opened, but didn't do so completely. Thus, the chutes would still have slowed him down as long as he doesn't cut them away or releases the buckles on his harness. I'm sure he hit hard, but he wasn't free-falling.

I had a buddy whose chute shredded when it deployed. This guy was like 110lbs though, so he was still landed safely albeit a lot harder on contact.

i'm not a paratrooper , but don't you always have 2 parachutes ? the normal one and the emergency one ? or is that just reserved to civilian paratroopers ?

and , if the first chute is shredded , can you deploy the emergency one without dropping the damaged one ?

I would thing if you deloyed your emergency chute with your main one still there the emergency one would get tangled in the main on.

emergency reserve chutes aren't known for their reliability lol. Also, a paratrooper usually exits the plane at an altitude where the parachute barely slows them down enough to land safely. Now, Imagine what would happen if 500 feet of that was spent falling like a rock while you waited for the reserve to deploy?

My dad was smile.gif

That reminds me- I got the Band of Brothers DVD set a few days back, and let me put it this way: If you have a DVD player but DID NOT record the episodes when they aired last year, there is absolutely no good reason why you should not go to your nearest store and buy this set. Now. I'm serious. This set reconfirms that this is one of the best war films ever made, even though it is not actually a 'film'.
