Gears

Recommended Posts

Call me a gearhead if you must (ah ah ah, stupid joke) but I'd like to see some control over the gears in vehicles.

Now I know they exist, as I can hear them shifting when I drive, but I think it'd be nice to have more control over the gears.  You know, switch to lower gears when you're going up hills or climbing a mountain, switch to higher gears when you want to cruise or go fast.

I know in stick shifts you have to use a clutch and all, frankly I think that'd be too difficult to do in a game (and IRL for me, but that's another subject biggrin.gif).  So my idea is that you can just push a key and change the gear (maybe pgup and pgdn?).

What do y'alls think?

And I did a search, didn't find anything on the subject.

EDIT - Oh yeah, and for those people who dont like this idea, it could be added as a toggleable feature (like super AI) so everyone should be happy.

I would like a clutch thingy as well... Think of the challenge you get and thoose quick get aways will not be so quick anymore.

Give me a working gear thingy.

The lower gear for hills is good, but, what interests me is starting the motorcycle in second gear and then watching the thread smoke.

Are there any scripts simulating this? Working car gears would be awesome, also engine failures would be nice smile.gif.

American vehicles don't have manual gears, so that would be a huge dent in the realism department wink.gif

One of the reasons I wouldn't like to live in the States...

I can't imagine driving any other cars than those with manual stick gearboxes. The first and last time I drove with automated transmission I almost hit my head on the steering wheel when I approached traffic lights: I forgot the thing didn't have a clutch pedal so my foot found the next closest thing -the brakes - and I pushed it like I would push the clutch, resulting in -SCREEEEETCH- ...

Anyway, I'm drifting off topic again. I'd say it's more important to work on those aircraft flight models & simple avionics (CCIP/CCRP hud cues?) before even thinking about implementing gears into OFP vehicles.

Wasn't the jeep a stick shift?

The HUMV may not be, I don't remember, but I'm fairly sure that the jeep was.

And jeep makes stick shifts too, I think.  So theres a least one American car company that makes manuals. tounge.gif

I think it's the other way around. People use jeeps ground vehicles more than they do airplanes (well, jets anyway).

No actually Americans have a lot of manual cars. We have 6 cars and all but two are auto. If you can find one car thats auto there is usually a manual sitting around somewhere...

corvette is manual isnt it? trying to think of any super sportscar that isnt manual... i know there are some of course, but manual gives better peformance... well i prefer manual - more fun, wheel spining is fun - oh, and spitfire - happened to me too - driving my Range Rover and plain forgot the whole clutch thing and pressed the brake in full sad.gif

but anyways - gears would be very cool - although maybe a bit hard to drive - i only have 10 fingers - as ot goes for ofp i have one hand on mouse and the other controlling movement - more buttons would confuse me tounge.gif

Corvettes delorean, chevelle, monty carlo, camaro, cutless, these alll came in auto or manual of course there are manny more types of cars out there the ones where i havent found Manual for are cars like the Cady, delta 98 or 88 or other big luctory cars. but normal cars or sports cars generly have the option of manual or auto. the US has plenty of manual gear box types of cars/trucks

The way I'm thinking is: you have 10 fingers, 5 of which are devoted to the mouse. 1 of which is devoted to pressing the go and stop keys, that leaves 4 fingers to push 2 buttons. biggrin.gif

And I don't mean like a clutch or anything, just pgup to raise the gear, pgdn to lower it one and put it in reverse smile.gif

Noone knows what it is yet, but just to let you know, in the mission scripts there's a "Gear" event and an "Engine" event you can work with in 1.85.

Uh, I am American. My car is manual, my brothers car is manual, and my father's car is manual. The only automatic car that our family has is the stinking van.

I am pretty sure that United States military vehicles would tend to me manual.

This game isn't set in America anyway who cares if American vehicles don't have gears. biggrin.gif I think Gears would be a great addtion to OFP biggrin.gif

Where in the world is everyone getting the impression that American cars are all manual?

Let's say: in Europe (or at least in my country tounge.gif) we have 1 automatic car every 10 manual.

(talking about new models)

What's about U.S.?

Automatic cars are more popular than automatic cars because they're easier to drive.

Manual cars are better for utilities, because you can specify the gear for your specific use. I'm pretty sure the 5-ton trucks and jeeps are manuals, not sure about the hummv, it might be.

This seems to be nothing more than a discussion about cars now so it can go to OT smile.gif

Manual cars are more popular here, since they are more fun to drive, and you feal like you have more control over the car. If i have to take control over a sliding car, a manual box would be my pick.

Its just alot more fun driving a manual... I mean, sitting with an automatic box, u just sit there... speed up... then break... its just too easy and too.... kinky smile.gif

For the record, hum-vee's are all 4-speed auto transmissions. There are not avalible with any other configuration. Also in the U.S. and Canada, on average 10% of new cars sold are manual trans and 90% auto.

Myself and my parents would have all manual cars except that the particular models they chose to buy are not available with manual transmissions. My car is only an auto because it used to be my grandmothers car, and she couldn't drive stick. But with only 90hp my Topaz is just cryin' out for a 5-speed.

What OFP really needs is a working Heat-system in all cars.... I mean.. that is just SOOO important for the fealing of the game!
