The 40-year-old ref was attacked by a group of 'ultras' who stormed onto the pitch after Acosta had sent off a player. One attacker used an iron bar and struck a fatal blow on the nape of Acosta's neck. Although the crowd scattered the assailant has been identified to the police. This incident is just one of a number of violent scenes seen in Uruguayan football recently, but this raises the safety concerns to a new level. <span id='postcolor'>

He was called Andreas Escobar, very sad story From sportsillustrated.cnn.com </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Escobar's moment of misfortune came in Colombia's next game against the United States. In Medellin 10 days later, Escobar was shot 12 times by a gunman as he left a nightclub. With each bullet his assailant was reported by police to have shouted: "Goal." <span id='postcolor'>
Warin 0 Posted September 29, 2002 I think it's a sad commentary on how important Football becomes to people in a lot of the third world. It's like the one thing they can enjoy and find excitement in. And like anything, it gets to be taken far too seriously. And then things like this happen and it casts a shadow over the sport for everyone.
Placebo 29 Posted September 29, 2002 Well to be honest the way I see it, these two things don't really say something bad about football, to me they simply show how cheaply life is valued in these two countries In most countries sport stars are considered heros, and referees/umpires are generally respected to some degree because of the jobs they do. loopy 0 Posted September 29, 2002 What a sad day for sport in general at the end of the day no ref no top grade to junior sport be it soccer league rugby whatever we all get pissed with refs from time to time but most people respect them for the job they do. Tex -USMC- 0 Posted September 29, 2002 I didn't say anything about Brits killing referees, however I did note in a roundabout way that many of your soccer fans show a cultivated disregard for things like sportsmanship, courtesy, and refraining from starting riots in foreign countries. You can get defensive if you want, but why bother when you know that some of the worst examples of soccer being taken too far occur because of British soccer fans. Besides, why kill a ref when just badly mauling him ensures that you will be able to do it again after he recovers?

As for the hooligan element of English football, it's pretty much been stamped out since the early 90's, yes there will be occasional incidents of violence, but that is simply one moronic bunch of thugs fighting with another moronic bunch of thugs, 99% of all football fans anywhere in the world are decent loyal supporters. When was the last time there was a riot abroad of English football fans? Last time I can think of is Italia 90, When was the last time there was a riot of English football fans in England? When have English football fans ever badly mauled a referee? As for me being defensive, perhaps, personally I see it more as striving for accuracy, if you're going to speak ill of a group of people you should at least be accurate and not base your comments on only half the facts

FYI, it doesn't say anywhere who started it. Not that it matters, but it does say in the second article that this was only weeks after 3 Leeds supporters were stabbed in Constantinople. In this case, emotions run high of course. Good on the WC authorities to instruct the police to keep out the hooligans, that doesn't mean that there weren't any English supporters So, altogether you have about 1000 morons that are up for a fight, as opposed to 400 000 Premiership supporters every week going without a fight (assuming every premiereship side has about 20 000 supporters in their stadiums, which is probably underestimated).
