My opinion about the ArmA 3 mod community

Recommended Posts

i love the amount of mods, scripts and so on and i respect the work of every modder out there (arma 3:life team not counting, since they arent modders).

but there are a few bad points which i want to talk about:

the first: since the case of arma 3:life, more and more trying to start selling theyr mods. i saw somewhere in the scripting section that someone wanted to sell his modified version of a script which he didnt even made (he just edited it). he uploaded older versions before but then he wrote "to use my scripts and edit them, please use my older versions or the one from the original author, for my new version you have to donate to get it". i remember that he uploaded it on steamworkshop but later removed it because people was against that pay 2 play and wrote in the theard that its not okay. another case is citylife 3 where you can buy with real money ingame cars which are models from other games, they may not directly ported from the games but you can get these models from modelsites for free, on these sites you can download the model from forza, shift2 etc. i have the feeling that more and more people trying to sell theyr mods because they see that arma 3:life gets away with it.

the second: usa vs russian theme. i know that everyone has theyr own idea and its a sandbox game where everyone can do what he wants. but the russia vs usa theme gets very old and boring now. we have certain projects which work on that theme: RHS, VTN and the NATO/SPETZNAZ pack, i dont know if i can count west vs east mod, it is almost the same theme. i mean why everyone makes russia vs usa and that even seperatly instead of joining one of the teams who already work with that. why not making something like china vs france or just a single military force like the chinese force or north korean army or any military which wasnt done before in arma modding community. it gets really boring to see hundreds of russia vs usa military mods.

just my 2 cents.

Selling other peoples work is squalid and loathsome behaviour, I agree. Hardly the fault of the authors, however; the modding community in general is rightly outraged. I'm sure that were you to offer guaranteed funding for a suit for IP theft against scum like the A3:Life drittseks, you would find one or more authors willing to take action.

Your second point is utter crap IMNSHO. What a modder makes is entirely up to them. You don't like a mod? Don't download it. Some people - myself included - like the mods you allude to rather more than the stock BIS units/scenarios.

There are other excellent mods available, always have been. In A2/CO there is CSLA, PLA (Chinese army, btw), Unsung, VTE, i44, HiP, OfRP, etc.; and many of those are likely to appear in A3 given time.

Boring? You seem to confuse your personal experience with that of the community in general. Isn't that rather narcissistic of you? With such a slur, you are not respecting the fine work of individuals like Massi or teams like RHS. Try making a simple mod or addon of your own - it might give you some inkling of how much time & dedication must be involved in projects like RHS.

Whatever the fuck that even means, have you heard of RHS

They make both US and Russia in high quality.

ofcourse ive heard of it, i even mentioned the mod in my post.

let me explain what i mean:

for example, we have now some USA vs russia projects: RHS, VTN, NATO-SF/Spetznaz pack and east vs west mod. ok, now someone will make a mod with the theme russia vs usa, he could join one of the current russia vs usa projects instead of creating a new usa vs russia project. this would also reduce the number of the usa vs russia project since we have already enough such mods IMO.

@Arma3goodCPUlowFPS

Even if there is a slant towards a certain selection of units/vehicles/aircraft,

people are creating what they want to create. It's their time and effort.Only

they can determine how it's used.

The same applies to monetising the content.Although many people would

feel it goes against the general spirit of this kind of community,it's a

decision entirely for the creator of that content. From what I've seen most

people seem to adopt a donation approach.Which I think is very fair.

If you get a lot of use out of a mod or addon, and can afford it,then

it's a tangible way to show appreciation for the time spent producing it.

We have only two choices with regard to content we'd like to see.

Wait until someone creates it.Or,as has been suggested, create it ourselves.

:)

I see where you're going and quite frankly it's always USA vs Russia in some point. Given the real world politics (which doesn't need to be brought here) it's slowly becoming more relevant. Modding is like a trend or franchise and people I've noticed make mods based on real world events. But RHS does some good Russian shit so I don't mind playing with it, even if I don't play US vs Russia scenarios. But in the end its up to us modders what we want to put out.

As with A3L... there's that topic as well :)

Before people hang the OP, we have to remember everyone has a view. If he/she has an opinion and wants to share that, then here on the forum is the best place for it, being that this forum is all about this series. Some mod/addon makers instantly dismiss people that raise topics that, lets be honest, could have been written in a little less 'matter of fact'ish' way, but if the language isn't your first (English) then it may come over wrong, not sure that is the case here or not. But as said, some mod/addon makers do dismiss 'too quickly' sometimes, another players view, maybe rightly, because that mod/addon makers opinion is also as valid. But lets be clear, it is no more valid, than the OP's opinion.

We all have our own view.

I get what the OP is saying, if you play real world type missions/scenarios then the lack of, or the excess of something, can seem a problem. I play fictional factions, US, RU etc are all different to what they were made for. So it doesn't really matter if there are various mods of the same faction, they can be split and used however we want. So his issue, is not an issue, for me and those I play the game with, but I'm sure there will be some players that feel the same as the OP, although may not air their thoughts here.

There are however, numerous factions, via mods, that are available for the players, thanks largely to the mod/addon making community, they can be found here and elsewhere (google). So perhaps a search is all the OP needed to do first, but its here now, so lets discuss it or not.

Regards paying for mod/addons. My view has always been the same, I'd be quite happy to pay for a good mod/addon, I've said it a few times. However, its not allowed, so there is where it ends. Further than that is for BI to decide, or indeed the mod/addon maker concerned, if action is to be taken against people abusing the way things work.

I just think mod/addon makers, make these things for themselves and some are generous enough to share, which we all appreciate and thank them for. However this doesn't, from my point of view, give them any more say here, than a player that simply plays the game.

Without players, there would be no game anyway, ask BI.. ;), :)

All these guys have pretty much rounded it up. But I know a lot of modders in this community, and I don't know any trying to sell their mods. Ofcourse a lot of them have a donate button, but your not buying anything from them. There are plenty of various "factions" out for A3, and the days of Russia vs USA are over. Ofcourse those two factions will almost always get the most love, just been that way since OFP. But authors make what THEY want to make, and most will try their best to oblige community requests as much as possible. But in the end we don't get paid for this, and if we did, it would be "work", and not a fun hobby.

he could join one of the current russia vs usa projects instead of creating a new usa vs russia project.

Very fair point, but VTN for instance is made by Russians mostly, and to be quite honest they tend to isolate their own modding community, those VTN guys are not too bad, but even for having a thread on bistudio forums etc they arent exactly the most active in "community" and those sort of things in the sense you see mods from those who are more on bistudio forums

Also many have different concepts or views for their project.

Also quality is a huge difference, imagine if RHS was 50% super high quality as currently and like 50% reused arma 1 and tubosquid ports or some shit... it would be pretty bootleg, so they instead keep a consistent quality

Also Russia is like, the biggest country in the world... and

The US is arguably the most "influential" in international events, and especially war (past the major ww2, vietnam , iraq , a-stan stuff too, there are very many international conflicts) , so its pretty logical to use them. (Though other mod topics are obviously great, im not endorsing anything here)

I heard Bohemia is suing one of the "Life" mods, either Altis Life or Arma Life. Anyone else heard this?

Interesting opinion on the Russians vs. US deal.

My first mission released is.....you guessed it. US vs. Russians. Just saying that does not do it justice however. The plan was to use RHS US vs. CAF Aggressors. Plays very nicely together but did not want to have too many mod Dependencies for the mission. One dependency (A fine RHS mod with a crap load of assets..I mean ridiculous ) on Altis was my final decision. What I have learned is you got to make the mission (maybe even mod ) that You want to play if you are tired of what everyone else is doing. There's a lot of helpful people out there/here and you learn a ton. PS - checkout my WestToEast Mission in my signature.

If you actually looked at what mods there are on Armaholic you will see that the majority of and its almost all of them except the few the OP is referring too

are all mods about other countries and factions.

the whole USA vs Russia stems from OFP as the East vs West mod is based on that hence the description of that mod:

This is an East vs West mod for Arma3 inspired by OFP.

Do yourself a favor and look through the pages on armaholic http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=arma3_files_modules

for mods that inspire you with ideas of what missions you can build, let your imagination take flight.
