Volunteer work

Recommended Posts

Have you donated any of your time to any organizations or groups in your part of the world?

I have done several things that I felt were rewarding to myself and to those that I helped.

For a weekend 2 years ago I helped in renovating an old apartment building that was being transformed into a battered women shelter.  I painted the walls, replaced some windows, cleaned and fixed up some bathroom and kitchen sinks, etc.

When I was back in high school, for 2 years I went to a "special needs" school for mentally challenged kids and I helped them with their homework, or I'd play games with them in the gym, or planned outings with them.  There was this volunteer program at my high school that when you signed up, you could drop any class if you participate in the various volunteer programs.  So I didn't take phys ed for 2 years and I had to spend 4 hours a week at this school with these kids.

Also with this same program at high school, I did some work in a homeless shelter on weekends, I mostly washed dishes and pots, and served the food.  And afterward I'd go out to the dinning room and play cards with the homeless.  I had some fun discussions with the homeless on several occasions.  But I only went for maybe 3-4 months and then one day the church that the homeless shelter was in, burned down so that was really sad.

And just this summer, I volunteered to this program that helped poor welfare/single parents move from one house/apartment to another.  In all, I helped to move 5 families.  Since they were poor, they didn't have much to move.  tounge.gif

Woodroffe High School's Candlelighters Club. I was vice president during my last two years of high school, from 1998-1999 to 1999-2000. We raised money for children being treated for cancer (I got involved in this because that's how I lost my father). Unfortunately the club seems to be inactive now and the website seems to be down, even though it's listed at the bottom of the link in my post. It's a shame too, during those 2 years we raised close to $4000 sad.gif

At my high school it is required that you do 20 hours of community service before you graduate. i worked on painting wooden peices that would assemble on a medium sized farm tractor, when completely assembled, the tractor would look like a locomotive, they were the "Peace Trains" for Northern Ireland. they were also making a fountian, the base of the fountian was constructed of the melted down weapons that was used in the fighting in N. Ireland. and i think either it was a octagon or a pentagon, which represented something, i don' remember exactly i think each side represented a politicle group. and finally in the center, a bunch of pillars, someware between 6 and 9 i believe, which represented the different factions. And on top of them was the bird Pheonix (spelling?) and it was rising out of a nest of guns, it was meant as a "New Beginning" as in when the Pheonix dies, from its ashes, a new life will emerge and start a-new. one thing we had to be carefull of was how much orange we used to paint the peices for the peace trains. maybe some of you fellas in this forum heard about this? anyway after i finished that, i was finishing my hours at a grade school carniville. in some highschools here, 300 hours is required, though i think thats just a rumor, probaly its really 30 hours. wasn't too bad, they gave me a nice certivicate w/ my diploma.

I would like to add that I probably got most of it back while I gave people heart attacks when they saw me driving. (I'v had people hit the deck for cover when I accelerated in my car ... and I'm not really a dangerous driver) smile.gifsmile.gif

I don't think that I have done any community service sad.gif

Well, I was with KFOR for a little over six months, but I was never involved in any humanitarian missions. On the contrary my work there was mainly to gather military information for NATO. Not really what you would call an honorable cause..

I would however like to go some day on some humanitarian aid mission to a real third-world country. Kosovo is still Europe and while it is shot to hell, people still have more or less a western quality of life. No, I would want to go with the Red Cross or a similar organization to some African country where I could see real human misery, and perhaps help to do something about it.

Well, perhaps one day.. it's not impossible..

i've been in africa as i said earlier ....... i've seen most of the worst things in my life there ? that's one of the reaons that pushed me to get in the army to avoid that what i've seen happen again

what you ask for could be a real shock , i did a depression that lasted 2 months after i was back

i came back with a real powerless feeling , the only thing i did there was watching people dieing , i'm sure it changed a little bit today but still .......

if you still want to go in africa for some hummanitary cause , there are a few programs at the UNICEF and the rest of the UN organisation that could be interesting (seen something about the installation of water pumps , can't remember where and by wich association though)

if you want infos , you could go on a few of these associations and organisations websites

http://www.msf.org/

http://www.unicef.org/

http://www.atd-quartmonde.org/

http://www.terredeshommes.org/

there are loads of other associations

I was going to say Denoir... it might really turn you upside down. You already worry about all sorts of foreign matters, might become a big burden on you? Anyway, very respectable! (I know you mean what you say)

i hope you were joking. one of the things that many non-LA ppl have is called bias against 'da hood'. it's depicted as an unlivable habitat with guns blazing everywhere by blacks. wrong.
