Unigine + Euphoria Engines

Recommended Posts

As the Unigine Engine looks similar to Arma's engine.

It does boast a few things that the RV Engine itself could implement. I'm sure that with improvements over time, stressing about possible changes of Engines, would be completely unreasonable, considering that with time, the RV can be taken and upgraded to a point where it would blow all of our minds. Remember when we used to think DOOM, and Rise of the Triads used to look so cool and realistic and what not, well... Engines like the RV, Frostbite, Snowdrop, completely destroyed the graphical appearance of those games. In due time, i'm sure that the RV Engine will recieve the love it needs to look as good any other crazy engine that we dream of having. Visible Humidity effects, low fog on the ground, glimmering grass due to morning due... low level clouds with higher clouds above those... clouds hugging mountains, things like those can be added. Chances are, the Engine can do these things. But of course, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Also the people working on "The vanishing of Ethan Carter" has some pretty interesting ways of doing stuff.

Using photogrammetry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photogrammetry)

They are building a horror/detective type game so they haven´t gone for all out realism but instead something that fits the universe of the story they are telling.

But even with that in mind, i´ve yet to see anything more impressive then the three gifs they showed,

That's the problem with realism in graphic engines: The uncanny valley.

And you just fell victim to this effect. :D

But that's a major problem for graphic engines anyway - that's why some minor issues in the RV4 engine are bothering so many people. With RV 3 everything looks "gamey", we unknowingly experience the game world as something that isn't 'real'. I think RV 4 has made a large enough step to put us right into that uncanny valley.

The outerra engine CyclonicTuna mentioned has some potential for ideas - like the deformable terrain. But I definitely wouldn't sacrifice the beauty and the realism of the RV4-engine for these, albeit nice, features.

The uncanny valley is usually something that only arises when visual styles are out of place, or with human(like) faces. I think Arma generally looks beautifull, but a lot of the visual fx, and the character faces aren't quite up to par.

I see where you are coming from but I think you underestimate the amount of work/time required to get a game like Arma to the state it's in today. A new startup would require years to get anywhere close to what Arma 3 provides now, and during that time require funding or some form of income through sales to stay alive.

Sure it 'could' happen but realistically.. especially after seeing the direction the gaming industry is moving over the last few years... don't hold your breath.

"Years" is the standard time for any good game to be made. Also, I don't think you're up to speed with the complexity of Star Citizen, especially regarding the simulation/"realistic" side, which is above ArmA's. Also let's not forget, you can heavily modify an engine to suit your needs.

What I would like the most to see and what's "next gen" to me, is PBR -

. The way it makes things look, it's just amazing.

PS: "A new guy on the block" that gave birth to a whole lot of games/hype/whatever, was Dean Hall. It's not THAT hard to make a realistic shooter/game, you just need talented people and good ideas... and some courage.

Wait, in what context did you just call Star Citizen a "realistic" simulation?

Given the fact that Deal Hall built his masterpiece (Dayz) on the existing Arma mechanics, i think it's safe to say, it was realistic from a standpoint of Arma's realism already there as a core.

It doesn't take much to be more realistic than the vast majority of space games, so probably in that context.
