Streaming Altis terrain with viecdistance at 12000 could be improved for air 2 air do

Has nothing to do with the dev branch, moving to general discussion.

ramdisk

Hmm... I can try that - I am just assuming that the terrain streaming would eventually reside in the OS filecache...BRB

Ok back again...

Ram disk does nothing for me. Using licensed DATARAM disk and mounting Arma 3 folder into empty arma 3 steam folder. FPS is at 40 to 60 because object dist is less than 1200.

Reason why I posted in the DEV branch (initially before post was moved) was because =

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?163640-Arma3-and-the-LARGEADDRESSAWARE-flag-(memory-allocation-gt-2GB)/page7 and the discussion about midrange blurry texture in the DEV BRANCH discussion

I uploadet a new GIF where a lot of the terrain tiles are white initially.

http://gifmaker.me/PlayGIFAnimation.php?folder=2013102209qkaD5UyCoR5BhZde0TaXdF&file=output_ULbg5S.gif

Specs:

1 GB Vram (ATI Radeon 5870)

24 GB ddr3 @1333Mhz

Xeon w3690 @3.47 Ghz

Arma DEV version 1.05.0.111.433

Launch options = -nosplash -nologs -maxMem=2047 -skipIntro -malloc=tbb4malloc_bi

The white texture are an arma engine. If ramdisk does nothing for you why the 2 gif are showing different problems? ;) The first is the slow texture loading due to hdd reading, the second is only due to arma and you cannot do nothing. Btw when you load all the texture around you can fly without seeing this again.

Loading game in ramdisk doesnt give a fps boost, it only improves loading time

Thanks for replying ramius86. I guess I might need a GFX card with more vRam in order to check if that (texture loading from regular ram) is 'the' bottle neck, and not some arma engine stuff.

The white tiles IDK .... The blurry tiles are probably because of only 1GB vRam

At the same time (I haven't been clear about this, sorry) I posted first in the DEV discussion because I wanted to 'hint' the issue to some BI developers in the hope of getting a reply that would 'hint' me that they are working on a solution already :) Expect a fix in one week :-D

I wish this has something easy fixable like too big terrain texture LOD's and there was an easy fix, like using 'smaller' detailed terrain tiles when flying high.... It looks like the engine is trying to stream 'fullsize' 'fullytextured terraintiles and then downscaling them...

Anyway I'll let it rest...

Thx for replying - Will save up for a new GFX so testing can continue :-)

12000 view distance for air combat, best on something like dbo_afghanistan, there is a A3 version, full view distance and 80-120+fps to boot remaining even at 12000vd everything Ultra.

Much more pleasurable experience.

But if you need the island, then not a lot is going to help get a really good game-play and a 12000 vd on Altis. I limit air to 3-4000 on Altis, but there is not enough of Altis for air to air, your at the other end before you get started.

Also Nevada desert terrain (large), that’s another good one for air to air combat with lots of fps to spare with ultra smooth game-play. I have a few more knocking around somewhere, for this type of mission, however its better in A2, far more to choose from for everything, at the moment.;)

Whats wrong with it? Seems to me its working as intended.

Tested on 32,000 viewdistance. 24 fps ish. once the objects get replaced for images

gtx 570, 12gb@1600, 2600k 4.4

WOW...how high are you flying? Is that the curvature of the earth? Did you basically max out the viewdistance to 10KM and fly as high as possible? I am going to try this and see if there are any texture streaming issues since my Arma 3 runs on the 4XSSD RAID 0.
