This has been an issue since ArmA2 AFAIK. (Maybe even before)

It seems that land doesn't cast shadows, only self shadows?

the shadows are too sharp and detailed anyway. show me such a detailed shadow in real life, where we have to deal with diffraction, diffuse light sources etc...

What is the shadow detail level? It looks like it is set to Low. Does the same thing ahppen when set to ultra?

This.

The land itself doesn't case shadows. Everything in that scene would be shadowed by the hill if this was real life.

Will it be solved in the future?

Think of it more of a technical limitation than a bug. I don't know if BI intends to make terrain cast shadows. To me, it seems like a funny thing to sink CPU/GPU cycles into given that arma will already eat almost any machine you put up against it. Shadows are not 'cheap' things to draw.

I would say terrain shadows shouldn't "eat" a notice-able amount of performance.

It's not something that would need too much poly's because it terrain isn't a "complex" object.

I recommend you make a ticket if you feel strongly about it.
