Longinius 1 Posted July 3, 2002 "The other funny one that I have read in several places is that Heinlein is a racist...trying to make all his heros fit into some anglo saxon mold. Really amusing when you consider that Jonnie Rico is a Philipino" Yeah, and Shujumi is Asian. "If you had actually read Starship Trooperrs, you would see that a LOT of people never do federal service. ANd yes, that means they cant hold office or vote, but that doesnt stop them from being succesful." Which was a point I was trying to make. Most people don't have any insight into what is happening in the political scene anyway, yet they manage quite well.
Guest Posted July 3, 2002 A democratic system is supposed to represent the entire (adult) population of a country. A fact of life is that a not too small percentage of any population are morons. They have to be represented however and hence they should be able to vote. The system is to serve the population, no matter how much the population cares about the system. Warin 0 Posted July 3, 2002 Those comments werent aimed at you, Longinius I find it really sad how few people...especially younger people here in canada... actually understand the political process and take any sort of interest in it. Voter turn outs are at obscenely low levels, yet everyone feels the need to bitch about the government at every chance they get. I wish they could issue an ID card when you vote, and if you dont have one...you give up your rights to complain when you dont like something the government has done. Even if you voted for the government..you can at bellyache that they suck and you feel bad for voting for them. No vote..no rights to bitch. That's my opinion

Democracy is bad, but its the best we got.<span id='postcolor'> It depends entirely on what we want with the system. If we want that as many people as possible are on average happy with the system, democracy is the way to go. If we want economic prosperity or something else then other systems can do it better. Warin: I wouldn't blame the people that don't vote. That is a right too. I would instead blame the system (politicians, education...) that has created such a situation that people are so genuinely uninterested in changing and improving the society that they consider it too much of an effort to get their asses to the voting booths. In Sweden we have quite good voting numbers. Between 80-90% of people that are eligible to vote do it. Instead we have the situation that people are very conservative in their voting so there are seldom any changes in the system. One might think that this is because of apathy but I have the feeling it is really much more that people are in general confident that the politicians are doing what is best for the country. The difference between the big parties are very small and the opposition is very mild. In Sweden, Swedish politics is very seldom discussed. If anything is discussed it is more international politics and not domestic.

That is so true. Thing is, by not voting you are goingto get lumped in with the apathetic and the ignorant. And that just sucks . At least when you vote, you can chose SOMEONE. I dont know about down in the US, but usually there are a LOT of candidates that arent in the mainstream. heck, in the last provincial election, we actually had the Marijauna Party. Their platform was that by legalizing mj, the province could then tax it and sell it, thus making HUGE amounts of money (Because I guess BC pot is some of the best in the world, or so I am told ) So if you dont believe in the main parties, you can always find a fringe candidate to vote for. They may not win...but you HAVE exercised your right to vote without casting said vote for 'the lesser of two evils'
cybrid 0 Posted July 3, 2002 Democracy dosen't work, thats why Canada always has a liberal government. The people of this country are too stupid to know what is for the good of the country. And Jean Cretian *spelling can kiss my hairy yellow ass!!

Does this stop when that freedom of speech promotes things that you don't want to hear? That was a very petty reaction IMO. Take me, for example, I am about as left-wing and liberal (in European terms ) as I can be without being in the Green Party, I am pro-Euro, pro-EU and hell, even pro-EU-superstate. And yet I would say that 30-40% of my mates in England are anti-Euro, anti-EU-superstate, some even anti-EU. Do I have a problem with them because of their opinion? Nope, because it would be non-sense. Get a grip and apologise to that lady for your petty reaction. She is entitled to her opinion.
