Difference between M4 and M16

Recommended Posts

im sorry but can someone professionally explain to me the difference between an M4 and an M16? because im locked ina battle with a bunch of call of duty nerds that don't know what there talking about and it frustrates me so much seeing as i just spent about 5 months researching AR-15s so i would think i would know the difference between the carbine and the full rifle

this guy clearly has an M4 in the Beginning but im assuming because he called it an M16 these nerds hang off his every word

The M4 is shorter and lighter than the M16, has a collapsible Buttstock instead a fixed one. Muzzle velocity from the M4 is lower and it's louder due to the shortened barrel (370mm while the M16 barrel is 508 mm).

That's pretty much it.

No point in trying to teach a CoD nerd, they have no clue anyway. :D

Which M4 and M16 are you talking about?

I have qualified with both an M16A2/A3/M203 and M4A2/A3, and I can tell you one isn't inherently louder than the other. It just seems that way depending on the weather and for the simple fact that your ear is closer than the M16 variants. I guarantee if you were blindfolded and you had Group A firing an M4 variant and Group B firing and M16 variant, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I'm not great specialist in western weapons but I suppose that with current amount of available parts there's almost no dedicated models like M4 or M16... They can be converted to each other easily.

If i've got my history correct, there was indeed a carbine entitled "CAR-15" which was the M16 with a shorter barrel...so M4 but not.... I don't believe the M4 moniker had been coined at that time. In one of his earlier vids he specifically holds an M16 and and M4 at the same time and distinguishes them both.

I mean he DOES spend a crap load of money on firearms, i trust he knows what hes talking about

The M-16 has a 20 inch barrel and a hard plastic stock.

The M-4 has(military version) has a 14.5 inch barrel and a hard plastic 6 position collapsible stock.

The M-16 tends to be more accurate at long range than the M-4.

The M-16 tends to be more reliable due to the longer barrel allowing more gas pressure to cycle the bolt a bit more reliably.

The M-4 is easier to handle in confined spaces due to the shorter barrel.Beyond that they are basically the same gun.

Just a note: The M-4 and the M-16a2 are the military versions of the AR-15 family of rifles. They are select fire which means that they have the ability to fire both semi-automatically and in 3 round burst. The M-16a1 was full automatic.

They are many variations:

M16A1 - 20" barrel, fixed butt stock, select fire in Semi and Full auto, triangular handgaurds and rear sight fixed carry handle with windage adjustments.

M16A2 - 20" barrel, fixed butt stock, select fire in semi-auto and 3 round burst, circular hand gaurds and rear sight with fixed carry handle windage and elevation adjustments.

M16A3 - Same as M16A2 but Full-Automatic fire mode.

M4 - 14.5" barrel, adjustable stock, flat top / detatchable carry handle, semi - 3 round burst.

M4A1 - Same as M4 but Full-Automatic fire mode.

M16A4 - Same as M16A2, but has flat top / detatchable carry handle and 4 rail handgaurds.

An important thing here I guess is that the standard ammunition for US, the M855 Ball, is designed for the 20" barrel of the M16, meaning worse performance with carbines.

The new M855A1 round (from 2010) is designed primarily for the M4 however, and should mean all 5.56-platforms (M4, M16, M249) have good performance.

The M16 is easier to hit people with when you grip it by the barrel.

Because it's longer, right? You grip it by the barrel and swing it real hard...

It's not a XM177 that had a fixed carrying handle.

Next time, just refer it as an AR-15, no need to explain anything to a retard.

Well at least change your standard 4179 magazine follower into something more reliable so that it won't jam like fuck when have a little bit of dirt in it.

And as NeMeSiS said: don't need to get piss on youtube, you can, however, intentionally piss those retards off.
